      Good question.
The point, however, that Hitchens is making here (and in other of his statements throughout his life) is that, throughout history, religions have been shown to have a very poor record on morality by creating and codifying moral frameworks that allow and encourage destructive and oppressive behaviors.
To more directly answer your question, though, it would seem better and more rational that a just system of morality should be unfettered by superstition and manipulative dogma predicated on superstition.

His courage to stand up and say what he thinks so directly and without hesitation is admirable. Many people, even those of a strong atheistic view like myself, would stumble and faulter when stood in front of so many members of public and highly religious people. But Hitchens never minces his words, nor backs down, and speaks so eloquently and appealingly. He truly was one of a kind.

however he ought to get some of his "facts" properly verified. What happened in WW2 that everyone harps on about, is not able to be supported by hard evidence. Its 100% personal eyewitness testimony, and MANY such reports are in direct contradiction with the next. Also, there are many reports that negate these horrible claims by members of that "victim mentality" religious cult. The Red cross regular inspections found nothing, the Allies Arial hi res surveillance photos did not revealed any hint of any such occurrences at the camps. Locals knew nothing about it, No secret messages in code were intercepted by the British, who had cracked the German Enigma scrambling machine, and the Germans were unaware of it. Not one scrap of paper has been found that hints about this event, and quite the opposite, orders from even the leader of Germany himself, instructed his camps commanders to do everything possible to keep the inmates healthy and thus productive in the surrounding factories. Gassed and cremated prisoners don't make very good factory workers. Propaganda by the winners is a marvelous thing, when no one is remaining to defend themselves.

Well say what you like about religion but it didn’t create all the weapons of war and destroy the natural world And turn the planet itself into a death trap. Science did. Nerd pieces of shlt that wanted to be famous slowly but surely turned this world into heII and plenty more to come. When are we gonna hold scientific institutions to account and demand that they too apologise for their abuses and the suffering they have caused. Religion doesn’t even come close to the damage that science has caused and in a much much shorter time frame.

_"Hitchens was one of the few people in the world who spoke the truth regarding liars and criminals and he did it with passion"_ - too bad he did so ONLY when he knew he was dying from cancer anyway... Lemme quote myself (czcams.com/video/yuGjcCByVyc/video.html&lc=Ugw2iuv_GOwms6lc2NV4AaABAg.9judaZQ3wbH9kWN5RQlHvn in case you've missed it), cuz it's so good it can't be missed, can it? ;-)
      =========
Czechoslovakia, early '70s, some bigwig Party secretary is having a meeting with local populace of some town, and talking the usual commies' horse manure, and at the end he says, or rather PROCLAIMS: - "But I promise you, comrades! - soon we'll have a real communism here!"
Silence, and after brief pause a lone, elderly voice pipes up from the crowd: - A ja se neboim! Ja mam rakovinu! ("Feck it, I'm not afraid! I got a cancer!")
(...) I might not be aware of all and every occurrence of our fearless Chris actually publicly criticising - no, wait! CONDEMNING, OPENLY and UNEQUIVOCALLY, this rather oppressive (women have no rights, faggots should be killed, etc.) and belligerent faith (death to all infidels!) - AT LEAST HALF as fiercely and denigratory as he used to when criticising Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. But then again, as I said before, I might have missed some of his lectures of this sort, so kindly please direct me to them - or STFU por favore. Can or not?
OK, 'nuff of this friendly banter - now let's talk concrete stuff,, shall we? Good...
      1. AFAIK he dared to criticise Islam - PROPERLY! - ONLY when he knew he's dying anyway - just like that old Czech fart from the joke I mentioned at the beginning. If he DID, in fact, do that earlier (again, I'm talking "proper bashing"! - like pointing at some most outrageous acts/ behaviours, that including this peculiar, erm... "attraction" to underage girls by "one of the founders" (wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more...) KINDLY PLEASE DIRECT ME TO THOSE LECTURES.
      2. Also, while at it, kindly please point to me any such public event(s) in which he (Chris) was fiercely bashing and insulting Jews and their faith. Again, a relatively mild and polite argument with some Rabbi (although you could clearly notice this disgust, or disdain, on Chris' face - or was it just a hangover?) that I watched few yrs back doesn't count - I mean this kind of uncouth, if not outright rude trashing he used to administer to Christianity and Catholicism on his every second breath. Hey, let's be FAIR, EVEN-HANDED and impartial, shall we?

I was an altar boy with a Roman Catholic church. I was 10, and waiting after a wedding for my parents to pick me up when the pastor of the church came to the pew. He started to touch my arms and leg while talking to me about joining the priesthood as an occupation. I revolted and removed myself from the pew. He told me to join him in his office so we could discuss things more. I recalled the other altar boys telling me about a priest who had gotten another altar boy drunk on wine and they were caught in the office. The boy was removed from the school and the priest left the diocese. Recalling this I left and went out front to wait for my parents, averting the pervert from abusing me.
I had always thought he was a molester and so did the other altar boys. We did not like working mass with him because he was creepy odd. When I heard he had died I danced a jig. The church protects these abusers. They hide them. They move them around and they turn a blind eye to the crimes because they do not believe they are crimes.

Revolted at age 8, after a nun knocked me unconscious for asking a question any kid growing up on a ranch could answer with certainty. Her story did not correspond with what I had observed since I was old enough to be given chores. So I asked my question. She responded by striking me so hard, my head bounced on the wooden pew bar and according to the classmates, I slid to the floor and hit my head on the kneeler. I was unconscious long enough for the nun to bother calling my mother and my mother driving the hour+ to the town with the church. Neither the nun, the parish priest, their superior, their peers nor subordinates apologized for the trauma.
Whenever it came time to go to catechism school, church, or any attendance of any event I ran away and hid. As it was an hour+ drive to the town with the catholic church, my parents could only spend a bit of time looking for me. When they drove off, I knew I was safe from the church for another day.
No amount of ."godly" love claims could convince me the catholics were anything but monsters. Later, and with knowledge from numerous exposés the monster became phenominally brutal and vile. My father (the one who forced catholicism on us) lived long enough to learn about his religion, but he never acknowledged nor apologized for what he put us through as a "good catholic".

They with ears to hear, let them hear:
Through the Holy Spirit, God has put it on me to preach to those lost in the devil's deceit!
Hear me when I say, ye that are Catholic have been deceived and know not God. Ye worship Mary, praying to her; when God tells his to worship none other than him. It is idolatry.
Catholicism has its own Bible and teachings, which are blasphemous to the word of God: the Holy Bible. As ye follow the teachings of man and not God; ye hear the pope, but not Jesus, yet ye claim to be his disciples!
These are but a few things I named ye dwell within; there are many more. I tell you now to repent of your sins, accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and you'll receive the gift of the Holy Spirit upon asking the Father!
There are *NO* sub-divisions of Christianity. You're either a disciple of Christ or not. A Christian is someone who follows God's word, not a religion. Who obey the Father and follow his will; not man's nor their own heart's. Unless you keep Jesus' commandments, think not the Holy Spirit will dwell within you!
They who heed this message and did what was stated with an open heart to God...
Read the Holy Bible (KJV) daily and every time before you read, pray to the Father and ask:
"Lord I ask that you give me understanding of your word, that I interpret it the way you want me to, and none of my own. I ask you in Jesus' name, amen."
      Revelation 22:8-9 KJV
8 And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things.
9 Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.
      Acts 2:38 KJV
38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
      Luke 11:13 KJV
13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
      John 14:21-24 KJV
21 *He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.*
22 Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world?
23 Jesus answered and said unto him, *If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.*
24 He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and *the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.*
      3 John 1:11 KJV
11 Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. *He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.*
      1 John 3:6-10 KJV
6 *Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.*
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: *he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.*
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 *Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.*
10 *In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,* neither he that loveth not his brother.

This my second time of listening to this oratory and whilst I am now in my twilight years and unable to retain the points raised for any length of time, it was a second awakening. I left the church at 15 years of age, some 12 years of ear bashing experienced by the thumping of a mysterious, hand written book by mortals called Bible, when one of the elders, a matronly woman suggested I no longer visit the house of God because puberty was effecting negatively my ability to sing in tune. Since that memorable day I have only walked inside one of these houses of sin for funerals, weddings and christenings as a spectator rather than a participator to support others with whom I share my wonderful life.
I accept fully, if religion brings joy and peace to the life of others then it is a force of good as is alcohol and nicotine. I do however believe that religion, like nicotine and alcohol is also poisonous and can destroy your life.
Interesting also, there are very few comments from religious preachers, these chosen people of god who constantly insist on telling everyone they meet how to conduct their lives according to their views. Christopher doesn’t preach, his words are a request, an invitation to think carefully about how you wish to enjoy your life, preferably without the intrusion of preachers, of which there are many enjoying a period of time in their lives in custody because of their god’s direction or so they will let you believe.
Enjoy religion if that is your choice but please don’t bring it to my front door. I thank Christopher for that comment.

No wonder Pope John Paul II began opening up about a number of issues Hitchens brought up, lest the truth get disseminated through other means.
