I went to other churches, left the church completely to be a wild godless party animal until God woke me up and carried me back. LCMS has always felt like home to me. As a Catholic, I often encounter the complaint that "we don't do full emersion baptism", so somehow it must be wrong. This pastor beautifully explained--it's not about the "amount of water", it's about the Word(s) used in the Sacrament! I feel like I just wandered into a Catholic Church!

    • @Blueray93Romania
      @Blueray93Romania Před 4 lety +9

      Uhm...no....sorry. Baptism, from khoine greek means: to immerse. And it was done like this from the beginning roughly til the west began adding changes upon changes to the faith.

    • @bethanyann1060
      @bethanyann1060 Před 4 lety +50

      @@Blueray93Romania Can you give evidence that it was always done by immersion before said "changes" were added? Because I can refer you to probably the earliest Christian manual for Christian practice called the Didache, which many scholars actually believe was written in the first century, and it seems to say the manner of baptism doesn't really matter. See section VII on baptism, in which it states that pouring water on the head three times is a valid method of baptism. ;)

    • @Blueray93Romania
      @Blueray93Romania Před 4 lety +8

      @@bethanyann1060 And concerning baptism, baptize this way: Having first said all these things, baptize into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:19 in living water. But if you have not living water, baptize into other water; and if you can not in cold, in warm. But if you have not either, pour out water thrice upon the head into the name of Father and Son and Holy Spirit. But before the baptism let the baptizer fast, and the baptized, and whatever others can; but you shall order the baptized to fast one or two days before.
      This implied immersion. Pouring seems to be when no other means is available. Because it says "if you have not either" THEN.
      So...in the correct Orthodox way, the person is baptised by immersion and only if proper water is lacking or there is an emergency(life or death situstion) is one baptised. So we see changes and changes brought by the Romans throughout the centuries which, of course, ended with the reformation.

      Sorry but the Catholic Church is THE authority on Christianity, as they are the ORIGINAL. If Catholics have been doing Baptisms without full immersion, then it’s OK. I fully respect other methods of practicing Christianity so long as they believe in Jesus Christ as God. But to say that a Baptism isn’t valid because it’s not full immersion is ignorant and flies in the face of 2000 years of Christian worship.

    As a Roman Catholic, I have a profound respect for the LCMS. They're probably one of the only Lutheran churches that have stuck by the original doctrine. A lot of what they do for their Sunday Divine Service is very similar to what many Catholics would observe in a typical mass. Unfortunately, I do have to say that sometimes the LCMS can often appear more Catholic than your typical Catholic "Novus Ordo" in that they might actually use incense, sing traditional hymns and use organ as the sole accompaniment. Unfortunate for the Catholics, not Lutherans of the Missouri Synod. I know a Greek Catholic priest whose brother was dating a Lutheran girl to try to convert her. She was LCMS and they met in the middle for what they will do on Sunday, mass first, Divine service after. After that, he asked himself "what am I going to convert her to? The service was more Catholic than the mass itself." That gave me a good laugh. All of the divisions in the church are unfortunate, but I'm happy that the LCMS and more doctrinally conservative Catholics can agree on many issues like social teaching.

      To Derrek Garcia- This is a very important clarification; thanks for making it. I have seen other Protestants make the same error. On the other hand, it is often stated that Lutherans believe in "Consubstantiation", which is not an official teaching of the Lutheran Church. Lutherans refuse to explain the mystery of the Sacrament, and so do not so much as reject Transubstantiation as decline to affirm it. They prefer to leave it as a mystery, while insisting on the Real Presence of Christ in the Sacrament of the Altar- the Holy Eucharist.

Of course there are some differences, but overall every traditional lutheran service I have been to has the same general shape and is instantly recognizable. The best example was when I attended a service on the eastern border of the Czech Republic. I may not have known the language, but I could tell exactly where we were in the order of service. Gospel reading, Lord's Prayer, Benediction, whatever it was. And hearing it all in a different language too, is so special. When we sang the hymns, I sang along in the English lyrics while hearing the Polish or Czech (since it was a bilingual service). I would love to attend more services in all sorts of different countries. It's such a special experience.

My husband later went to seminary and we were assigned a field work church (mentoring church) where he got to learn more about the liturgy, traditions, and ceremonies that the Lutheran church kept because it confessed something about our faith and scripture. Of course, we sing the Sanctus (Holy Holy Holy) every Sunday so in a way, we are joining that great cloud of witnesses every Sunday. You should visit a confessional Lutheran church!

      I’d encourage you to research other denominations as the 1st comment suggested^^ I myself was born and raised Catholic and I love it. Last year, I tried out an evangelical small group and church and it was good! There was definitely a lot of people passionate about Christ. I just felt out of place there and I missed the Catholic Church. I’d recommend watching “the hour that will change your life” by father mike Schmitz to start off and then read John Ch. 6. These teach about the Eucharist. If you look at these sources and they spark an interest in the Eucharist, I’d look into Catholicism. The sacraments and especially the Eucharist are what draws me to the Catholic Church. To me, God loves all people in all denominations equally, but I believe I personally am able to connect with him most in the Catholic Church simply because of the sacraments. Definitely look into it and look into other denominations too!!:)

      Adam, I've been in your shoes. I grew up in Pentecostal churches, where the gospel--Jesus died for you--was definitely preached, but the emphasis was on internal feelings and signs, and a changed or charged spirit. In Lutheranism I came to learn that God's works are "extra nos"--outside of us, fully accomplished, and simply delivered our "poured in" through the preaching of God's Word and the sacraments of baptism and the Lord's Supper. Because of the emphasis on the external working of the Word (vs. the internal feelings/ emotions/ changed heart), Lutherans realize that everything about the church itself should also "preach" and proclaim this Word, this truth of Jesus for us and the surrounding history and events. Thus, Lutheran buildings have a distinct and intentional architecture that proclaims what the church is, who Jesus is, and what God is doing for us through his Word. The symbols, the beautiful art/ stained glass, the colors, the "uniforms" of the clergy and assistants--all of these are part of the confession of faith and designed to teach and reinforce our confession. I've been in Lutheranism for over 20 years, I consider myself an intellectual and very well versed in theology for a layman, and I'm still learning about new things and nuances in all of the art and symbolism contained in the art, music, architecture, etc. God be praised for his gift of the word, the church (which is the vessel of the word and sacraments) and all of the faithful, thoughtful theologians, artists, architects, etc. through the millennia who have confessed God's truths in many different ways!

      A lot of people think that because we had beef with Catholicism in the 16th century, we tried to change everything and take down every construct of the Catholic church. Martin Luther, and us modern Lutherans, actually love a lot about how traditional Catholic church masses are, and instead of chucking all that out the window, we get rid of what was problematic about any of it back then, and adapted it to our order of worship. There's nothing like a Lutheran's love for traditional hymns. It's always a highlight of the service, and something I look forward to all week long. And there's something really special about involving yourself in something that has been fairly unchanged for hundreds, if not thousands of years. I come from a very long line of Lutherans, and I often feel connected to them through our shared faith and thinking "I wonder if my great great great grandpa in Denmark used to sing this hymn." I definitely encourage you to check it out.

      That's exactly what the liturgy is meant to be so I'm glad it came through that way. I'm a Lutheran and on any given Sunday we mifur sing a hymn from the 6th century, followed by one from the 16th century, and then an African American spritual from the 19th century, and then a hymn from the 13th century, and lastly a hymn written 15 years ago. Historic Christian worship takes the best things from each generation and adds it in without throwing out all of the old stuff. So it really is like having all 2000 years of christian worship.

      Jesus is the total focus in a Lutheran church and Mass. There may be images of the blessed Virgin Mary and Apostles as examples of Christian virtue and faithfulness to Christ. But the reason we bow to the altar, processional cross and elevation of the Host and Cup is because Jesus is fully among us. His very and Real Presence drops us to our knees in awe and reverence.
