A Roof Over Your Head? The failure of transitional housing for Gisborne whānau | The Hui 2022

- čas přidán 26. 05. 2024
- Transitional housing is an ongoing reality for whānau such as Cheyenne Denhem, Mohi Gerrard, Levi Williams, and Te Rina Takarua who have been trying to cope in motel rooms and other unsuitable housing with their children. They want to know why they're still there, and say the system is failing them. Organisations like Manaaki Moves, and housing advocate from Turanga Health Tuta Ngarimu are trying to help solve the problem.
Made with support from Te Māngai Pāho and NZ On Air.

It would also help if our Government started looking after our own people.. instead of replacing them..and catering for Refugees from war torn countries.... Homelessness has gotten worse ..where many HNZ homes have been given to Refugees..and our own people put in Motels or Homeless on the Streets... Forgotten people..is so True..Looking our own should come first..
My neighbor owns a local bakery. He tried for nearly a year, giving Kiwi's a try to help in the bakery, getting up at 3am to bake. No one lastest more than a week, it was too hard, too tiring for young people. He has now brought in people from Cambodia, and they are happy to work. Some jobs just don't suit New Zealanders, so foreigners need to come in to do the jobs. Same with farm jobs, Kiwi's are too tired to do them. When you come from a poor country with very little, you are more willing to work. Kiwi's seem to be too spoilt to work hard
Problem is our hospitals and caring professions are woefully understaffed and these new immigrants bridge a critical gap. Governments can look after, but also too much looking after can have the unintended consequence of having people feel a lack of agency right from adolescence.
I agree with you 100% on the refugees, in most cases.
We have the same problem here is Australia 🇦🇺 it feels like the government cares more about the refugees.
Immigrants yes, refugees no. Put the refugees into the motels. House NZ first!
@@mucows Hes talking about 'refugees' not just immigrants that work hard. Refugees get a nice home and allowances as soon as they arrive and don't have to work because they cant speak English. Even after 10+ years they still pretend not to know English so they keep getting the benefit. Wasting tax payers money
If you want to bring kids into this world, be more prepared to work hard and provide. It seems this couple wants to rely on the benefit and not work. Wake up and mahi hard
Ignorance is bliss for you. We are being overpopulated like never before and cramped out. Not the same as years ago. That kid comment is very unethical. You must enjoy a dictator mindset.
💯
Prospective is cheap.
Sad people have kids expecting tax payers to feed and house them, get a job I'm sick of working 12 hour days 6 days a week to support this shit.
They've been there 4 years and had anther 3 or 4 kids.... how do you find the privacy
The negative comments we are suppose to be here to support our people whether they are maori asian poly etc...the system is broke...😢😢😢
I earn pretty good money and there is no way I could afford 6 children. There’s a whole generation of people who think that it is societies job to look after them. Use your brains, stand on your own two feet.
I wonder how many people in this video are employed?
Ure right
They have there hand out
He’s got to much time on his hands, working would give him a purpose and he would be to prove for his children not the long suffering taxpayers
Yep and continued to have children in that four years, irresponsible.
You heartless pos
i knew someone would say something like that, sad it had to be you..
theyre lucky to have a roof.some people are sleeping on the streets in the cold and rain.maybe swap and see what homelessness feels like.stop having babies and stop complaining.
why do people comment on here, when these brave whanau are already struggling enough. kia kaha WHANAU keep speaking loud and proud. i appreciate you and Thank you for your story...
WHY are our peoples still there..??!!
Why keep having more kids when you have inadequate accommodation?
Not just families in transitional housing single families are in their to workers!
Get a bloody job! To get out of this so called "why are we still here" situation.
There are a lot of people who are working their butts off, and still can't find places.
@@BekeDownes Least they work though and aren't having 8 kids on welfare.
God bless this family and many like this family ❤
The situation is bad and getting worse, here in Oz the situation is people/families are in tents. My aroha to all those peoples, NZ gov needs to stop the importation of foreigners, I never in my life did I think there would be a housing shortage of this magnitude
Australia is all good I get $9 more per hour than in nz doing an easy job
It's such a hard situation there's people in the houses who don't look after them an then there's the homeless who would,
Have 8 kids but no steady employment should be illegal.
Exactly! Beneficiaries should be banned from having sex forreal. Regularly tested and fined or jailed for having sex. It’s their kids that are doing the ram raids, smh
Stop having kids ! You can’t afford it! Start with working. People are facing the same issues!
My heart goes out to this family🙏💕
Cher the bro i used to work with mohi at Bernard Matthews meat works and his mum rosie i hope and 🙏🏿 things get better for you bro
Should investigate why maraes aren't used to house their people

Some already are
I’m don’t get why it’s the states problem to baby these people. Don’t have kids people when u can’t afford them
Yes, I agree some of these families have obviously had more children since they have been in temporary housing. What is Ngati Porou doing to help.??? Ten post-settlement iwi have $8.1b assets, can they not spare a few dollars to build houses for their people? Why should it always be the Government and Taxpayers responsibility to cough up?
@@kiwikat8143💯
No the landlord has to sell up and most of them at the same time become homeless.. Don't be ignorant.. It's bad everywhere around the world right now.. Where have you been hiding..
@@kiwikat8143 if it wasn't for English government we wouldn't have to seek government funding
@@creetatinirau-bu1zmwithout knowing me, I don’t think it’s fair to call me ignorant. I’ve been there, broke as hell. I used to make a boil up from dog bones at the supermarket. In the creek next to the road to get some cress.( still do now). Lived 8n a shack of a house. But u know what? I knew it was up to me to help myself and my whanau into better times. So don’t ever call me ignorant.
So have another 2 kids im emergency housing?
Time to grow up and get a job,you are the parents of the children if you want a better life for yourself and your children, I can’t afford to have 8 kids and I work hard,
Have they heard of contraception or the snip?
But not the Muslims….
So they have 6 kids and cant find a house. Are they trying to get a 3 bedroom house to house 8 people?
I live in a studio apartment building. There's a man living here, then about a month later a women moved in and 3 children. In a studio.
Get dad off the PlayStation and get a job! Wanna know how to turn $40 into $400 ?put some gas in your car and get a job fella
My parents raised 8 kids and foster kids and my half sister on no benefits back in the day and my mum had no disposable nappies or washing machine or dryer when my sisters and brothers where born. I'm the youngest. My mum was 16 when she met my dad and had 4 kids under 5 then had the last 4 a few years apart. And she had a hard life too. And one of my brothers was adopted. My dad was older than my mum. But no matter how hard it got mum stayed because of us kids . Love u my mum
Love u my dad xo
The foreigners are working hard and paying the taxes that pay to support New Zealanders. I'm sick of hearing crap about forgieners, they generate New Zealands income.
Bro get the chop!
You cant afford to bring children into this world. My wife and i both work full time and its not easy. Cant imagine doing it today with 2 kids let alone 8. Mahaki te iwi
I would be sooo thankful to God for the roof over our heads..It could be much worse.
You have no idea what it’s like I transitional housing.
@mummylilbear6088 get job then
I just dont see how this is everyone else's problem? These days having a roof over your head let alone your own bedroom is a luxury.
There are people that genuinely need the help but that doesn’t mean once you get it you sit still and not want to work hard to further educate and eventually move into your own place leaving where you were for someone else that needs the help. And you can’t expect your own children to grow up and be independent and hard working if what they see growing up is the norm. The same thing when your family parties all day everyday, people drunk everywhere all the time, why you would expect your kids not to drink get drunk and do all that when that’s what they’ve seen all their lives. You the parents are teaching your children to be less then. You are teaching your children to sit around and wait for hand outs. You can’t blame anyone but yourselves, especially when you know your situation sucks but you keep being these poor kids into the world🤦🏽♀️
How many people come into nz and they get the houses over nz people 😢
Got proof??

Geez, how many children tho
Exactly, Looks like they can’t control themselves. Kid after kid
The birth rates are declining tho. So we actually need to have more kids
@@Zion-BearThe people that need to have kids should be working and raising future tax payers. Not entitled unemployed people that keep having kids they can't afford that end up growing up to be a perpetual welfare drain on society like their parents. Like the first story on this video, having eight children, the dad doesn't provide for his family and then having the audacity to moan they can't fit all their kids into emergency housing. I bet they had more kids whilst in emergency housing thinking they would become higher in priority and be housed faster.
@@Zion-Bear yeah, healthy and well adjusted kids. Kids that don’t grow up in poverty and consequently miss out on opportunities that help them become useful citizens.
Omg that's Soo sad! It's reality in new Zealand right now this family deserve better.. I'm paying $600 a week rent on a rental property I can't afford I was put in this house from a work and income housing broker after a long time on the waiting list. I'm in rent arrears and are trying to get out but honestly don't know what to do and work and income dont want to help now lol
Why do people keep having kids if their situation is already dire? And they don't even bother to work, they just expect the govt to provide for them? Then they say their housing situation is inadequate but add more kids to it! The entitlement baffles me.
Heaps of people work & still end up in this situation !!!!
@@PattiRiMcGuire-rt6ys you missed the point entirely. A lot of people do work and end up in this situation but at least they are paying for their kids and own rent. If you earn a wage there's more options besides just relying on social housing such as private rentals etc. Those people had more kids when their housing situation was already unsuitable (probably to take even higher priority for a house.)
They need to take responsibility for their actions we the taxpayers are not responsible for their actions, grow up and make your life better
the spiritual realm rules all...if you get it you get it if you don't you don't.. pray for your family to get up..
I was making 9 K a month and still struggled to save ft
I don't doubt it's frustrating after many years in cramped conditions, but be grateful you still have a safe, clean place to live. The teenagers need to be taught that peer pressure is preferable to being homeless. No backyard? Go to the park.
There are heaps of empty new builds in Mangere. Had kainga ora housing project advertising all over the place when they started building them. Now. All privately owned and empty. Yet motels are full with families 5 mins away. 🤔
It has been all around the world right now.. Homelessness
This is what making poor lifechoices and expecting others to pay for and fix their mistakes. These parents have failed those children.
That’s a terrible thing to say! They are loving parents who are wanting a better life for their children. Not everyone is blessed like yourself
@bjh288 I'm not blessed, I made good life choices, worked hard to set myself up, and raised my son to be a good adult
It's bad here in WA too. Homeless people in every country town now 😞
Bring broke in Australia means they not too smart 😂
When’s the next baby due?

Of course you all are pakeha commenting about the number of kids they have, not the issue at hand.
If someone said "all us Maori commenting"" they would be racist but you can say "all pakeha."
The issue at hand is having 8 kids on the welfare system then wanting free social housing. The dad is capable of making babies but not working.
