- Quentin Tuwhangai, Hohepa Taiaroa, Eugene Ryder, and Riwhi Toi Whenua speak out about the physical, mental and sexual abuse they endured in boys' homes such as Epuni, Kohitere, Wesleydale, Owairaka, Hamilton, Lookout Point, and Corrections' Rangipo, and the cycle it created. The Hui's award winning 2017 investigation Ngā Mōrehu prompted the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care. It uncovered an unimaginable scale of abuse of children in state and church care. After years of hearing often harrowing evidence, the inquiry has sent its report and recommendations to the Government. Survivors are now waiting to see whether it will deliver the justice they have been seeking.

Was in Kohitere in 77
Was a lock-up, in Kiwi villa.
Kohitere was a place of prodigious dysfunction, violence, including sexual violence was just a part of being there.
We did learn to fight in those places, not everyone though, some boys were too afraid to help themselves, other boys became girls or acted like girls.
When i look back, i cant believe how evil this system was, the people who operated these places knew how fukd up they were.
There are no records available today, all of the institutions that were subject to this commission of enquiry, no longer exist, record keeping wasnt considered a priority.
Funny.
That bit of boys became girls or acted like girls hit a nerve because it happened to my younger cousin soon after he was sent to Owairaka in the 1980s.went to visit him a few times then he quietly told me what he was going through.he didn't want his parents to find out I felt so angry and helpless what to do how to help him all I could do was support and encouragement at the time I did nothing said nothing to those in authority its something I've been deeply ashamed of not trying to help him but I know he sees the home as the culprit and no animosity whatsoever to me even though in my mind I should have at least tried to do something.
@rodeo4786
You need to let that go my bro.
You were powerless too, it's impossible to process the reality of something like that, whether you're in it or witness to it.
You could have a sit down with your cousin if he's still around, could be some healing for both of you.
@ngabushallday6642
I get it much appreciated take care 👍

Some people shouldn't be Parents .. if you can't look after yourselves what makes you think you are going to be a good parent .. Just want the Solo parent unemployment Benifit for selfish reason not for the kids that suffer ...You will give an account on Judgement day.
May God's love be with all those who suffered in Silence ❤
I bet those social workers who abused these men & are still alive, will be having sleepless nights, wondering when they get a knock at their doors. The time when everything is disclosed & no longer hidden has arrived.
😭 May God bless you all ❤
May we use the mistakes of history to create a better future.

The stolen generation continues.
😔💪❤️✊
How sad you make it a maori issue. I grew up in the Hutt Valley and there were plenty of boys that this abuse happened to. Both maori and pakeha. Why not make it about what really happened and not a racist issue.
Hey there buddy, I think you're not seeing the issue here, yes there were pakeha kids that suffered abuse within the social welfare system in 60' 70' & 80' in these institutions.
The problem though, is that the vast majority of them came from less than 10% of the national population.
The sins of the colonizers.the truth must be revealed to ste these men and many others free. .
Exactly the sins of the colinizer.Our men were broken to keep them down. Our parents worked and lived the pakeha ways! Drinking was new to the Maori and broke our families down. These guys are showing there true kaha and spiritual guidance from our tupuna
