Deported from New Zealand: Ex-criminals and Gang Members Sent to Tonga

  • In Deportees of Tonga: Gangsters in Paradise, VICE embeds with four Tongan nationals who have been sent back to the tiny island nation where they were born after serving prison time in New Zealand and the United States. Former gang members, they often struggle to reconnect with the culture, the language, and the people. They are haunted by the stigma of their criminal pasts, which casts a pall over their employment prospects and puts a barrier between them and their compatriots. Government support for returnees is non-existent, wages are low, and with Tonga in the midst of a methamphetamine crisis, the temptations to revert to the lives of crime they hoped to leave behind when they left prison are high.

Amazing story telling. You never hear a journalist's voice asking and interpreting for the audience. You simply hear people telling their stories. And that's more than enough, it's powerful. Thank you Vice Asia for such a sensitive presentation.....

A good friend of mine (An Attorney) told me about someone that he represented. He said that a fight had ensued (over a female, of all things) and that his client had hit the man just one time. The guy hit his head on the curb, and he died. On a plea deal his client got 14 years. He's still in jail at this moment. He'll probably be out in 5,6 years but his life is pretty much OVER. He won't be able to get a decent job because nobody will hire anyone with a felony record. It's sad, and all because he just could not walk away.
