The problem isn't women pursuing careers...it's that they expect their man to be richer, 6 feet tall, good-looking, etc. It's rare for a man to have all of those traits at once. As a man, I'd love to have a super model virgin with no debt, a heart of gold, and who can cook well...but that's just a fantasy and I don't see a problem with settling for someone with some of those qualities. Most modern women never let go of the fantasy that they can land the supermodel millionaire funny husband in the top 1%. Maybe some can, but holding out your whole life and encouraging others to do so is only going to create a lot of lonely people who despise the opposite gender. With women passing men in education and income, they'll either have to date down or cater to what men actually want...a homemaker wife. Both options repulse modern women, and they all seem to think they'll bag that top 10 % man, but if every girl wants that man, then why would he date a 30-year-old when he can get a 20-year-old well into his 50's. Why would he marry when he can get a new girl every single day?

This problem is not caused only by one factor or policy. It is caused and worsened by centuries and centuries of awful, horrible patriarchy, government brainwashing people from birth onward, and lack of real information. Way before the one child policy started, it was already ingrained in the Chinese culture that women are nothing compared to men. There is a Chinese saying "a married off daughter is the same as the dirty washing water that you throw out onto the street." So all of the parents of the current leftover men are not feeling guilting for aborting or abandoning/killing baby girls. They STILL think that was normal and a good choice. Of course they will not see themselves as having contributed to the current problem. The only child policy was a trainwreck and ruined the country and culture beyond repair. The ripple effects will happen for decades to come. And with the crazy shortage of women, if you think that will make men appreciate their women more, you would be wrong. Because sexism and misogyny is ingrained into every fiber or the Chinese culture, women have nowhere near equal rights, and are still treated like shit. And of course there will be people who say I am wrong about that because of such and such example of some happy lady. Of course there are happy marriages, but in general, the society is still awful to women. My sources: Living in China for over twenty years, being married to a Chinese man, speaking Chinese fluently (thus understanding the deeper meaning of everything) , having a mother-in law who risked her life to have a son when she already had a daughter, and experiencing first-hand a fraction (because I am a foreigner) of the sexism that exists in China. China is also insanely classist, racist, and every other negative -ist you can imagine. For anyone coming at me saying I am whatever, racist, or against China, nope. I observed these negative aspects of the culture, and I don't need to mention all the things I love about China (and why I married into the culture) to defend myself.
