What's Our Yoga Diet Like? | Breathe and Flow Yoga Lifestyle 101 Episode 19

  • We're finally sharing our yoga diet about what, when and why we eat since we get this question many many times a day. How do we align what we eat with our yoga practice? Check below for all our other offerings, resources, documentaries, other channels and more ✌️
    We didn't make this video to convince anyone that what we do is perfect and they should do it, too. We explained what we do and encouraged others to think for themselves. If you seek the truth on any topic in life, you can expect that it will never be spoon fed to you. You need to dig deep and explore yourself. ❤️
    Since many of you asked: we do not use supplements like protein powders on a regular basis. Sometime we use pea protein to put into a smoothie. What we use daily is B12 and Magnesium oil. Spices we cook regularly with are cumin, tumeric, ginger.
    This is what we do and what works for us and is not intended as any advice for you. Consider consulting a doctor or nutritionist if you're planning on making changes.

      Yes please! Especially on the first thing you eat (break the fast). I've been doing 16/8 for a while now (3 years vegan) and almost always break it with a big fruit bowl. I've read several options but nothing concrete. How about you guys? Gracias!

      May I ask Bre, if you are okay with it, how your menstrual cycle is? I was doing intermittent fasting for a bit there and lost my period so I had to stop, just curious if it was just how I was going about it but I know some research shows that can happen so I wanted to know if you’ve experienced anything like that and how you feel about it

      I’d love to see this. I can’t square your physique/ energy levels/ amount of exercise with the amount of protein I would have thought would be necessary. I am not doubting you, I’d just love to know how it’s done. Any chance you could work out the macronutrient values of your diet as part of the video please?

    Thanks Bre and Flo, I have been vegan for 33 years...it saved my life...literally. I love all of the benefits and how it makes me feel. One secret is to learn to eat plant based without going to crazy with " copycat" meat recipes. I have learned to love the most simplistic foods...as they come. Thanks for all that you both do.xoxox, Lolly

    I totally agree! I have been doing the same things. I am in my 40s and never feel better and energetic. I learn from myself that we honestly do not need much food. Our bodies are perfectly adaptable. If we eat dead food we feel dead and lethargic. Where else when I eat vegetables a specially lots of greens I feel full of energy and my mind is clear. I notice my concentration is sharp and I also realise that I am paying attention to small detail which before I wouldn’t bower, I guess. I live more in present moment. I never have breakfast ,I start my day with glass bottle of warm water with honey, followed by eating few dates and almonds. Then I have lots of green veg and rice, or sweet potatoes. Sometimes I have smoothies later on because I do not feel hungry. Thank you guys for sharing. ❤️🙏

    I decided to stop eating meat like one year and a bit ago, and I totally agree with you. I started seeing benefits since some days after. Now I am starting reducing the amount of food during dinner, but I’ve never thought about fasting. Yes, a lot of people ask you about the reason for doing it and so, but I decided as you mentioned to just answer that “cause I like to”. There is no need to justify our lifestyle.

    Hi Breathe and Flow, you beautiful souls! I just want to say what an inspiration you are to me and to many others. I did your Embark classes, and now I am on day 4 of Ignite. It's the first time ever doing yoga and so far it's been amazing, you both are wonderful teachers. I have definitely heard others talk about intermittent fasting, I think Sadhguru follows a similar plan. For myself, I've been a vegetarian since birth, however not solely plant based....Cheese is the big one..It's tough to give up. Anyways this video has definitely opened my eyes, I feel lethargic and devoid of energy quite often after I eat, which seems counter productive. I want to have more energy. I want balance and a positive mindset. I don't want food to be just a routine any more. I want it to be a special and sacred, and I need something to change here. Seems like intermittent fasting might play a part. Thank you again for your content. 🙏🏻🕉

    Fasting has literally changed how I feel everyday. I find that I don’t ever “feel” hungry. I feel super light on my feet. I feel less lazy because my stomach is not constantly filled with food. Also, when I DO eat, food tastes amazing. Simple peanut butter and fruits taste WAY better than when I was use to eating huge meals filled with sugar and salt

    I love this video. In the Bhakti /Sanatan Dharma tradition we fast every 11 day of the moon cycle known as Ekadasi. So I’ve been accustomed to this for about 6 years. It’s not only wonderful for the body it’s also amazing for the subtle body/consciousness. So many people in the West are so conditioned to this Western paradigm. We should look to the east. Where time isn’t linear or black and white. But cyclical.

    Exactly what I needed. Great video guys. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain your experience. Truly inspiring. Seriously. I went vegan 4.5 years ago. Best thing I’ve ever done. But even though all the foods I eat are healthy, I feel that I’m eating too much. Always been interested in fasting and have tried 1 and 3 days fasts but they were just one offs and I went back to eating 3 times a day. I’m definitely overeating and it doesn't feel right. Even though it's all healthy (fruits, veggies, nuts, grains). Crazy. Right? Was gonna clean my house this morning. Naaaa! Instead, I’ll be watching all the videos on fasting you’ve recommended and also doing my own research. Can’t wait for your ‘what I eat in a day’ video. Love you both!

    • @BreatheAndFlow
      @BreatheAndFlow  Před 4 lety +1

      we totally understand what you mean with overeating on healthy foods. this what is very common when you start fasting especially when you go to a 20/4 window it is easy to fast but difficult to not overeat. it took us a few months to figure that out as well and create the discipline. after a while you just feel so much better when fasting and you want that extreme focus, energy and being light which is when it gets easier to control overeating. ease into it an take your time. a first way to usually start is by doing 16/8 which is really only skipping breakfast and moving it to later in the morning. we still eat breakfast foods but at 11am. a 16/8 window is for example eating between 10am and 6pm, which is for most people very doable. thanks for watching 🙏 and THANK YOU for doing your own research ❤️

    i can attest to IF bringing more energy back into your life and improving overall health. i'm transitioning back into 18/6. 70% plant based, vegetarian as well. it's really hard for me to eat enough calories to gain muscle, though. the hardest part for me, and probably the biggest reason i stopped fasting, is until a couple years ago i saw eating as an inherently social activity. hard breaking that mindset/pattern.

    I heard a lot about the benefits of fasting. They have it in many religions. We used to fast for more than 18 hours every day for 50 days and stop eating meat and dairy products. I remember that I used to feel healthier and with a clearer mind. I don’t know what happened in the past few weeks but I am feeling more and more interested in plant based diet after I started following pick up limes! I tried few of her recipes and they were actually good. So there is a big possibility for me to adopt this diet but I want to make sure to do more research as you guys said in order to make the transition smoother and better. Thanks guys!

    I totally agree that I feel more energetic, lighter and stronger when I go mainly vegetarian, and do Intermittent fasting. When I eat meats, processed foods, sugar heavy food, I go into a food coma and feel bloated, tired, sluggish. I know what is good for me, and I’m continuing to transition to meat-free and sugar-free.

I have been vegan for over a decade and just started trying intermittent fasting, thanks to you! It's working great for my yoga practice, in order to practice on an empty stomach. However, I've noticed I'm cramming all three meals into a six-hour window or eating two huge meals to "store up" for the fasting period. How do you avoid overeating when doing intermittent fasting? How do I know how many calories I *actually* need? Thanks in advance to anyone who can chime in on this! (I know I have to listen to my body/do more investigation of the science, but I hope this will be a fruitful jumping off point. Thanks!)

    Great and fascinating info! Bre, how are you doing while pregnant with fasting? I'm curious as to how a woman may feel with this lifestyle while creating a life. I recently had my second baby and I was encouraged to eat and drink a ton after giving birth to keep my milk supply up. I wonder how a woman goes through the stages of prenatal and postpartum with fasting and being vegan. Would love to hear about your unique experience (as everyone is different and has different needs) 😊 P.S. I love this channel so much!! • @MidnightSonnet
    @MidnightSonnet Před 4 lety

    I hear what you're saying and I'm not against how you eat, aside from the nutritional deficiencies that can accompany it. I respect how anyone chooses to live their life as long as it doesn't harm themselves or others. My journey has led me to try, literally, every single food lifestyle change ever invented. I've had massive health issues my whole life (autoimmune diseases, many respiratory infections, tons of antibiotics, system wide inflammation, multiple gut issues, RA, OA, etc) and I've seen SO~ many doctors, specialists, and nutritionists. I'm seeing an RA specialist currently. I've had two colonoscopies and I'm only 38. One of the GI specialists I went to years ago (who also performed a very painful colonoscopy on me) suggested I go vegetarian, but to still incorporate fish. Back then, I wasn't as knowledgeable about nutrition, health, and the human body as I am today, so I took his word for it, considering I was already eating a vegetarian diet beforehand. This should have been a red flag, but hindsight is 20/20. Before I went vegetarian (and at one point vegan, then pescatarian(o)(e)), I ate a pretty standard diet. Not entirely healthy, but also not unhealthy. Never ate junk food and quit soft drinks in my early twenties. My first colonoscopy turned out normal during that time.
    It was only after cutting out meat that I started to feel a lot sicker. It didn't have anything to do with the Hex affect, since I didn't feel the typical "flu-like symptoms" that usually accompany die-off and adjustment. Nothing in my life changed aside from my diet. I was desperate to try any diet to help me heal from my many ailments. And, trust me when I say, I did a TON of research on every side of the diet spectrum. Reading a few vegan books written by doctors was what pushed me to try it. Looking back, I should have done more research. One of the books was aimed at causing fear and alarm to anyone who ate meat. It went into detail about our teeth, digestive tract, etc and how it compared to other meat eating animals. I bought into it all. Which is why I didn't understand why I was feeling worse on a diet that's touted to be the best for humans.
    So I decided to get way more specific about researching. I decided to look up lifestyle changes that have helped people with autoimmune diseases. And that's when I found my answer. Reintroducing animal products was kinda hard for me since I'd been strictly vegetarian for months, but I wanted to try out what's been working for people like me. I saw changes rather quickly. More energy, my immune response was normalizing (blood tests confirmed), I slept better, my mind was clearer, and I felt like I was finally healing. When I'm off the lifestyle change, I notice it right away. Gut issues come back, I feel sluggish, etc. That's how I know it works for me. I've done a TON of research in the meantime, as well. Mind/body/heart connections, mental health, hormone imbalances, various other eating lifestyles (one I plan on trying soon), various healing modalities, and a slew of other things. I love knowledge. It's powerful. I've learned so much and I'll never stop learning more.
    Again, though, I hear what you're saying and I respect your choices. I hope you're supplementing with what you're not getting from plants alone. However, veganism isn't for everyone, like it wasn't for me. It can be quite harmful to people who don't do well on it. Many of the things people eat when they're vegan/vegetarian do cause inflammation and hormone imbalances. I didn't know this till I did research on the science behind it. It's true that people 100% need to eat way more veggies and some fruit. That's a given. However, I implore people to look at all sides of the spectrum when it comes to human health. Try out different lifestyle changes. Don't stick to just one until you've tried them all and found one that heals you. ALL natural food is healing (aside from allergies to certain ones, and intolerances, though those can be healed). When you see food as the enemy, your body will react thusly.
    When picking a lifestyle, it 100% MUST be healing for you. It has to touch all bases of importance: mind, body, soul. Never let anyone tell you what's right/wrong for your body, except doctors, but even then, do your research on what they say/recommend. You're in charge of your health. Treat yourself kindly.
    Stay safe and healthy, everyone!

    This is a topic I'm really interested in. Especially from you guys, because you state that you feel really healthy and the fact that you are both strong people, in a that way consolidates your statement. I am vegetarian (not vegan) for 8 or 9 years now and in multiple phases I had big iron deficiency. Greens turned out to be not enough or not easy to assimilate so I had to take supplements for some time. It would be interesting to know about your source of proteins and in what amount you consume them per day too. Lastly, as a vegan I imagine B12 would be a thing to check. Have you ever had a blood test to check it ? It would be very interesting to know this stuff and get them medically validated.
    Oh, and I forgot. Did Bre change anything during her pregnancy?

    I'm in recovery from anorexia at the moment strongly discouraged by my Dr to do any fasting. Wondered what your thoughts would be for someone in this situation? Got out of hospital a couple of weeks ago and sticking to a meal plan at home. Restriction of any kind can be dicey for me. I need to consume 3000-4000cals per day at the moment to slowly gain, so need more hours in the day to get this amount in. Keeping up the yoga so I get stronger as I gain, though generally encouraged at the moment to rest so I don't put my heart at risk. Hope I get to a stronger healthier point soon - you two are really inspiring.

      thank you for sharing your story! since you're already seeing a doctor we suggest you follow his/her advice for now until you have a green light to listen to your body again (once that is re-established) and then continue with what feels right. you're already doing a lot to reduce suffering on this planet by eating plant based, and we're proud of you for that. don't cause more suffering to you by overthinking what you eat and wanting to be somewhere else than you are now. it will all come with time and you got this - much love ❤️

      Hi Micah,
      First, congratulations on making the decision to recover your health. Facing recovery from an eating disorder can seem like an uphill battle. I know because I've also struggled with anorexia, and I understand what you're dealing with. I'm a man, by the way, in case we have that in common :).
      Second, in case it wasn't clear already, it's *very* important that you don't experiment with any form of fasting right now. Stick to your calorie plan, and focus on gaining! Fasting may have benefits, but not for you, and certainly not in this moment. The healthiest thing you can do is to continue to rebuild your body, restore organ reserves, and lower your stress levels. That means eating when you want, and sometimes when you don't, and relaxing (ideally eliminating) all rules related to food and exercise.
      Good luck! Recovery is hard work, but it gets easier over time. If you feel like talking, let me know I'd be glad to chat.
