  • Let's look into this PM Research model 3. I have a friend that lives 1850 miles away. He recently acquired this engine, but it is need of some repair. Here it is in our little shop, so we'll get after it and address whatever it needs. A new (custom finished) oak base, clean and degrease the engine, cylinder, and shutter valve, modify the base to accept a magnet to hold the new burner, repair the valve linkage, and polish the flywheel & movement .I hope the video can explain in more detail as to what all needed to be fixed.

    It sounds good. I wish that I could get my flame liker engines to run. The one that I found in my dads things when he passed away that was made in Dayton, Ohio I have no luck with it at all I guess that I need to work on them a little more. I did get it to run 2 times for a very short burst of energy. But right now I have no energy to work on anything after my heart attach and surgery. The Doctor tells me that it will take sometime to build up my stamina.
    Please keep on posting your video's as I and other enjoy watching them.

      Gary, I would be glad to help you get it up and running again. Let me know how I can help. I really appreciate you and everyone else who watches our little channel. Spring is a busy time for me, but I am editing a video on the 7a Stuart, I hope to have it out tomorrow.

    Sounds good with hopes that I will be able to get my 2 flame-liker engines to pop like that.

    👍 Reduce a little bit the pressure the valve springplate applies on the valve. That makes it run more stable and faster.

    It I may ,
    I think nothing can justify the use of graphite grease on these little models ;
    I was advised 10 years ago to use only lithium grease for big models, or refined singer sewing oil for smaller models. 😊
    Today, and with over 100 models this is just a perfect advice !
    Of course you won’t lub Wiggers , Hogs ... ☺️
    Graphite is really unhealthy ... and messy !

    new to this i am so this might be a redundant question.
    would a silicone dased film lube be beneficial? would it gum up the works too?

      Hi Jaguar, I have never tried silicone lube. I would think that it would gum it up (but I can't honestly say). I'll give it a shot and let you know. I always use dry lubricant and have had no issues. Now you've got me curious too 🤔

    Is there some thing in the instructions that says not not to lube the cylinder like you said in the video? My buddy ordered one and I don't know if these is something warning about that

    • @steam212
      @steam212  Před rokem

      Hi Nick, I can't give you an honest answer on that, I have never had an instruction sheet for one of these to look at. I can contact P.M and get a copy of the instructions so we would both know for sure. I do know that from past experience that they do not like oil in the cylinder though.

    Didn't which video to comment on, but I liked to know what you recommend for a first timmer of these model engines gas or steam etc just withch one?

      If you are looking for a first time model engine, maybe a Jensen, Mamod or Wilesco steam engine would be a great place to start, especially if you got an electrically heated one. They come up quite often on eBay for less than you may think. Remember to use distilled water in the boiler and to lubricate all the moving parts of the engine before each run. The most important thing is to enjoy it and never run the boiler dry. A properly cared for model will last for MANY years 👍
