Nest Protect Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Review

  • Check out my review of the Nest Protect. The Nest Protect is a smoke and carbon monoxide detector. This smart device will give you voice commands as well as the emergency warnings if it detects smoke and carbon monoxide in your home. If the levels are low it'll give you a simple voice warning so you can check it out. The Nest Protect can be operated from your mobile device or the web. So the Next Protect works with iOS or Android on your smartphone or tablet.

    One additional point you didn't mention: The Nest protect has a 2-year warranty. Many other brands have a 10-year warranty. So, that short warranty may lead to additional costs down the road that would be avoided if you had a different product. Other than the high cost, I think this is a great product.

    I had the first generation of the battery powered Nest Protect. Worked fine for about the first year and then started getting a ton of false alarms from it - too many to count actually - and about half of the false alarms happened around 2:00, 3:00, or 4:00 AM. Not a great way to be woken out of a sound sleep! I'm assuming the false alarms were a result of Nest occasionally pushing software updates to the device. Regardless, when you buy a smoke detector that's supposed to actually "protect" you and give you peace-of-mind and it doesn't work properly then it's essentially useless and dangerous. And when a $40 smoke detector outperforms one that costs over a hundred then that's just bad design. In speaking with Nest about the issues they admitted that there was actually nothing they could do to fix it outside of either sending me a new one or providing a partial refund. I took the refund as I had lost all confidence in their product. If it's constantly giving false alarms when there's absolutely no smoke or carbon monoxide then who knows what the hell it would do (or wouldn't do) in the case of a real emergency. I'm assuming that the subsequent generations of the Protect are more reliable but I'm not going to be the one to try them out. Good luck if you've purchased one!

    • @BukuiZhao
      @BukuiZhao Před 2 lety

      I got one and I never had any issues. Plus the first gen is very buggy and what you said was a common issue, I do strongly recommend you trying out the 2nd gen. Plus My First Alert smoke detector recently stopped working and it never had much features. Before even steam would set off that one but not the Nest. Now that detector has completely stopped working in just 3 years. it is supposed to work for 10 years. I never had any issues since I got my nest.

    • @BukuiZhao
      @BukuiZhao Před 2 lety

      What I mean by that is my First Alert detector purchased in 2019 would no longer alarm to smoke, even the test button does not sound the alarm. When I put in the batteries the lights still blink but there is no reaction to smoke or even the test button.
