    Ah I remember year 2011 when Paradise Oskar was representing Finland. It was the first time after Lordi that many Finns thought we had something special to send. He did well in the semi-final and placed 3th. In the final he had to perform 1st, and then the end result was 21./25. I still feel it was mainly because of the running order.

  • @funkerman86
    @funkerman86 Před 3 lety +14

    One important thing to remember, even the winners from the 1st half need some help to win. For eg. when the EBU wanted Turkey to win from the 4th position in the grand final, it was the only time I can remember when the reprise of all songs was backwards, starting from the last to perform.

    Got curious, and as a swede searched for a few of our songs that didn't do well (since everyone always complains that sweden is placed in the top whichever song we send). Anna Berghendal, who didnt even reach the final played as the 6th performance. Malena Erman, which placed low in the finals, played as number 4.

    Over all of Eurovision's history the song preforming as 27th has an on average finishing position of 3rd!!!

    Ayy, the best Eurovision youtuber is back, we were all feeling very uncomfortable without you! Video is stellar, just like always! To be honest, the running order should be randomised again, just like before 2013, it would give everyone some sense of equality. Thanks for speaking about this, say hi to Jamala, John, Tamara and Severine from me!

    • @RanESC
      @RanESC  Před 3 lety +9

      The good old Bricker is back too! :D Sure, random draws of the running order would definitely bring back certain equality. But I believe that it may destroy a bunch of songs, for example 5 ballads in a row wouldn't be the best thing to watch. I get the point that they want to make "every song stand out" but it will always be hard to believe that everything was decided in an "neutral way". Thanks for another comment and yes, I Wil definitely greet Johnny, Crimea Woman, Tamarus and Paprika lady for you

    I think it depends on what half is more competitive
    If all the good songs are in the second half, for instance, then the one good song that's in the first half instantly becomes the most memorable song of the night
    Like in 2019 where all the songs that did pretty well with the televote were from the second half and Duncan's and Sergey's were the only songs from the first half to place high with the televote

    I will just add that people tend to have more free time towards the end of the week, so viewers of the first semifinale are less than those of the second one. Which means that in the finale, there will be more potential voters for those who performed in the second semifinal.

    • @PanosLP96
      @PanosLP96 Před 2 lety +1

      No, actually first semi finals have more voters because people are waiting for 12 months to have Eurovision back, and they are excited. Thats not the case for the 2nd semifinal.

    I think the reason why songs early in the running order never win, is because producers are convinced that songs in those positions are not gonna do well and purposolessly give it to hopeless entries..

    • @jlhabitan50
      @jlhabitan50 Před 3 lety +4

      I think it's a little more complicated than that. All the countries still have to draw lots of which half of the show they'll perform in so there is still a random chance that a number of hyped up entries will share the same half and producers will have a hard time how to place them apart, as well as figuring where to put in breaks if prepping the stage for one act takes longer than 45 seconds, among others.

Obviously that sounds insane and that number can be decreased but having 5 people something so impactful is unfair. Maybe they could get the delegations involved (idk 😂). Anyway - great video 👍

    The problem with the serial position effect is the assumption there is that you are seeing/reading the list for the first time. So once you take away the list and try to remember what's written on it, the tendency is to remember only the last ones.
    In Eurovision however, that isn't the case. By the time the grand finals night happens, the jury and to some extend a majority of the voting public would have already seen the entries beforehand (either during the semi-finals or even earlier than that, during the weeks leading up to the shows - either through social media, youtube, music videos, live performances, news etc...) So come grand finals night, the public and the jury more often than not would have already come up with their "favorites." So regardless where you place their favorites whether first or second half, they're still going to pick them. The grand finals show basically just acts either as a "reinforcement" or "deal breaker," either the grand finals performance "reinforces" their favorites or "takes a little bit away" from their favorites. But other than that, both the public and jury would already have had their sights set on their "favorites."

    • @fabiodeluca4816

    but to be true to the serial position effect, maybe put them in 3 groups instead, first 9, middle 8 and last 9. how would those data compare to the first and second half actually
    damn good video though, i was planning to do research on this too but kept delaying it

      That would have been interesting! But also harder for the statistics. I went with the first and second half because it's a more integrated term in Eurovision. Anyway, thanks for the thought and thanks a lot for your feedback! :]

    What we need is data on the voting pattern of the televoters.
    Sure, there are 200 million viewers at home but what's the likelihood of them picking up a phone to vote? Or vote numerous times?
    Hardcore fans are probably less than 1 million but if they are more likely to vote, or to vote numerous times (you know how obsessed our kind), then the issue of them not knowing the 25 songs within 2 hours is non-existent.

    I would play recap in opposite order compared to actual order…It would lower the disadvantage of preforming in the first half

    They should play the recap in the reverse order

    This year it is proved once again that running order indeed matters. Malta got the 2nd highest televote in her semi-final performing 16th and in the final she only got 47 points? Things didn’t add up.

    Maybe they should decrease the amount of finalists to 20 to make it more likely to remember them all.
    Btw amazing video production!

      That doesn't seem fair especially to the countries already struggling to qualify. My country has almost always qualified from the last few places. Especially if we see more countries entering eurovision then the chance of qualifying is even slimmer. I think this is a problem we cannot fix.

      @@23Zakira Yeah, definitely not fair especially when the Big 5 are automatically in the finals.
