PS. I've made two mistakes in this video:
    - Michael Schulte became 4th , not 5th at the Grand Final
    - The statement that only about 10% of people between the age of 14 and 49 watched is wrong.
The "Marktanteil" is the figure that states how many percent of all current viewers watch that specific show.
So luckily, there were more young viewers! (still don't get why they'd vote for Sisters)
Thanks for the people who pointed this out in the comments

This was spot on! It definitely didn't help for them to splatter their faces on the LED screen; a disturbing trend that I thought would have been brought to heel when Lisbon did away with the screens last year. Unfortunately, 4 or 5 entries this time reverted to this old habit, which exemplifies a lack of creativity on the part of their stage directors.

In Italy they have the San Remo Festival, in which eurovision was based on. The winner is sent to eurovision. Competing in Sanremo is a tradition and honor for every Italian artist. They would never make a cheap and shitty song. And the winner usually IS the best song. That is why Italy places relatively high in the recent years.
It looks like German artists feel ashamed about competing in eurovision. Because there are good singers and bands but they always want to send one hit wonders or people you never heard of.

    • @theresaalbert3915
      @theresaalbert3915 Před 3 lety +2

You summed it up quite well though as a German I would like to add something. A lot of great and very successfull German bands, some of them known internationally, were willing to represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest. Those were for example:
      2013: LaBrassBanda (Bavarian folk)
2014: Santiano (sailor's folk/Irish folk) and Unheilig (gothic pop)
      2015: Faun (mystical folk)
2016: Gregorian (Gregorain choir), Luxuslärm (pop), Avantasia (power/symphonic metal)
Most of them were robbed terribly by the juries, the public vote never won in all these years. Mostly due to some questionable preferences though it was never as obviously bad and unfair as in 2019. Rumors about a rigged system started since 2013 I think. Anyway, in 2017 the national selection tried out a new system and since then no major band or solo artist has tried to compete for representation. And honestly, I can understand them, even though it makes me quite sad because I like all these artists.

@@louisromero2320 Even if we provide more money, we should still compete in the semi final. I think people will vote for a song they have seen a few times before. In last 11 years the jury vote the "big five" last in 7 of the finals. Spain x3, UK x2, Germany x1, France x1. Is this because our music is not good? Because we did not compete in semi-final?

Does anyone actually care about who we send to Eurovision anymore? All the shortlisted entries are amateur acts who probably wouldn't get through the first round of The Voice or over-the-hill stars looking for a final paycheck, and the songs are always complete dross in either case. Case in point, I don't recall a single UK Eurovision entry that has bothered the UK Top 10 for a very long time, whereas many other countries' entries have been hits at home and abroad. It's like we treat it as a strictly amateur event, no professionals allowed.

So just about everyone puts Melodifestivalen on a high pedestal so let's how I could give an argument against going that route:
Melfest, with its long history as a national selection since the early years of Sweden's participation with the contest, is regarded as a TV institution in Sweden. Upcoming artists in the country go through the ringer in the song festival as their "baptism by fire" into the music industry. Established and veteran performers continue to return and compete as they treat this as a platform to perform new music. Eurovision is a secondary priority for many of these acts upon joining Melfest as they aim to please the home audience first and foremost.
The selection process of choosing songs from thousands of submissions (with artists in mind) is one of the toughest out of any national selection, with varying rounds of elimination. And they don't just choose for the sake of presenting Eurovision-ready tracks but they select a wide variety of songs that appeal to various demographics that watch the show, and spreading them out in the show's many heats.
If one is to attempt to imitate Melfest (but will certainly can never be duplicated) with a localized clone, they would have to make sure they have established singers and songwriters willing to take part in the first place, as well as having the support of record labels who could supply them with fresh, and premium talent. And that is the issue with many Eurovision countries with big music industries like the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany.
Germany certainly has a lot of great talent that have made their name at home, across Europe, with a few making it overseas (I know Milli Vanilli and Cascada where huge in Asia). But if Eurovision doesn't exactly have a good reputation in the country and is considered a career killer by big-name acts, they wouldn't risk associating their name with the contest. Likewise for the UK. The Netherlands have only just started rebuilding their reputation since 2013 so while getting Anouk-level big names is still difficult, it certainly ism't possible now. Duncan is a relative newbie in the Dutch music scene so big names aren't always a solution. France, meanwhile, is just finding their groove again after turning their fortunes around in 2016. And Italy is Italy since coming back a decade ago.
Melfest is seen as an annual song festival in Sweden that lasts a whole month or so and, more than a Eurovision selection show and is treated as such (much like Italy's Sanremo Music Festival). The pressure of representing their country, from the looks of it, is kept to a minimum. Hence, the quality of songs have always been set to a high standard.Too bad though that most songs that do have a shot to become potential Eurovision entries for Sweden are, in recent years, too safe and not risky enough. They do well from jurors, but they've been seeing discrepancies from televoters for two straight contests. And that is a problem Sweden will have to address because they will certainly not gonna be winning anytime soon with the way things are going.
Aly I don't think would have done well, probably might end up the Norway 2019 route, scoring low by jurors (not much going in terms of lyrical content), but ranking high by easily-swayed televoters because it's very flashy. Lilly Among Clouds perhaps was the better and riskier choice.

Thank you so much for summing up the mess of this year's german entry!
When I had watched the preliminary decision, Aly and Lilly were - by far - my favorite participants. Both ladies had a huge recognition value - an attribute an artist needs to stick out in the eurovision contest. Hands down, Lilly might not be the generic star ard's and ndr's average viewer and jury voted for at first glance, but she certainly fits every criteria of the eurovision song contest. Stunning voice, unique dance, one of a kind presence... the choice of song is debatable, but I'm sure Lilly could turn every song into a memorable experience. I personally liked this song, however the lyrics might be the only aspect that might have a need for improvement, if you want to look deep enough into her performance with the intent to find a flaw at any price.
Be that as it may, I would have never considered Sisters to be a possible option for Germany's esc entry. Shallow theme for their song, unremarkable participants and a consistent flow of off-key notes throughout the song. I think 'superficial' fits this year's entry quite well. It feels as if the producers took the first song they had come up with within the first 5 minutes, took some girls and decided to turn everything into a esc entry. And the worst thing of this mess: people had voted for this unfinished entry and it ended up winning the preliminary decision. (those weird notes simply can't belong to a finished song in my opinion...) And I'm not convinced that the voting procedure was as legal as broadcaster wants us to believe...
Nevertheless, Germany got what it deserved this year. I really hope they change the selection system next year... it can't be that a halfhearted entry like that ignores every selection procedure and ends up winning the preliminary decision.
And it's quite ironic: most german media are quite "surprised" when they report on this year's eurovision results.
Thanks for reading this novel of a comment - have a nice day!

I'm Swedish and whilst I generally do like our system, as of late, Melodifestivalen has started letting more and more *EXTERNAL* countries vote for what song we send to the ESC, which in all fairness probably does increase the chances overall for winning ESC since the jury votes from other countries are kind of biased by the fact that they've already chosen our song once, but at the same time I felt it kind of removes a part of the competition, namely the "This is the *swedish* choice". For example 2017, where the song sent to ESC was "I can't go on" by Robin Bengtsson, that was only after the points got added from the foreign jury's. By the *Swedish* scores, Nano's "Hold on" was the song to be sent to the ESC. Whilst I agree it's nice to have some influence from other countries and what they think, I think the majority of points should be in the hands of the swedish people, since it's *our* competition to find out *our* favourite to send to ESC. Back in 2017 (I've not done research on 2018 or 2019 to know if anything changed) 50% of the points were in the swedish peoples' power to decide, whilst the other 50% were distributed amongst the other countries. One might argue that "fair distribution", but it's quite subjective and personally, I think the swedish people should have at least 75% of the points to distribute.
