    Hey josh great idea for you for staking your tomatoes is to put a couple metal “T” post in your garden boxes toward one of the long sides. The. Take hog fencing panels and cut them to the length of your garden boxes. Take the fence panels and lean them from the one edge of the box over and onto the fence post, so it’s like a 45degree angle. The tomatoes will grow right up through the panel holes and support them. Much easier than using the flimsy tomato cages. My dad uses this method I described above and it works great. Thanks for the variety of videos. Your farm continues to look better and better 👊🏻

    Not growing a garden yet, however one of the implements I knew I'd need with my tractor is a tiller....the one I will be getting is a reverse rotation type, supposed to till even better than a forward rotation tiller, we shall see. Not tilling anything new, just areas that have previous been tilled.
    My current roto-tiller is an old 70's Troy Bilt Horse model tiller with an old Tecumseh HH60 6HP engine on it. Does great. Needs new tines though LOL.

    • @theElderberryFarmer
      @theElderberryFarmer Před 3 lety +2

      The videos I've seen about reverse rotation tillers show that they will till deeper, and make the tractor work a little harder since the tiller wants to run away instead of run toward the tractor. Another thing to be aware of is that since the tines are throwing stuff upwards, rocks can get jammed in between the tines and the underside of the top of the teller.
      If you don't have much in the way of rocks or roots to contend with, I would think that a reverse rotation tiller will really get that garden stirred up fast and deep!

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c Před 3 lety +1

      @@theElderberryFarmer No rock issues to deal with, areas have been previously tilled with a walk behind tiller for many years, so shouldn't have any issues with it.

    • @loganbest4247

      I wouldn't think it would hurt. Worst you could do is till a small test plot and soil test it to know for sure.

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  Před 3 lety

      like battery acid...pine forests are notoriously acidic...you've gotta get some "green" in there on that "brown" composted material. Lots of folks are of the impression that top soils are best in the woods...however they're much much better in grassland areas...hence our "grain belt" in this country

    • @StoneyRidgeFarmer
      @StoneyRidgeFarmer  Před 3 lety

      very acidic....will need alot of lime and nitrogen

    • @mikegrant8490
      @mikegrant8490 Před 3 lety

      I'm using pine needles heavy in the walk paths to keep the weeds down and help keep the soil temperature from getting too high in the midsummer. In the fall, I work everything back into our very sandy soil. Over the last few years, a lot of composted leaves have really started to build great soil. Another thing I am experimenting with is tilling a lot of fish guts, bones, etc., deep into the soil for the trace elements. You can really see the difference in the tomatoes. It doesn't hurt to get your soil tested to keep the balance right. Lime helps if you get too acidic.

      @blahorgaslisk7763 Před 3 lety

      Tomatoes are fricking frustrating. They love the heat and sun, but need copious amounts of water or you get nothing. And don't water the leaves of the fungi will take the plants, not to mention all the critters who seem to love them. Oh and when you (not) water (the leaves on) them make sure you don't splash the plants with mud or the bacteria in the earth will kill them..
      The zealots can go to ridiculous lengths to care for their tomatoes, including watering them with "golden water". Yep it's what you think it is, and if you don't know what I'm talking about then *do not look it up!* Me, I just say F that and water them with a hose and if there's a bit of mud splash then so be it.
