  • Let me show you how to teardown & rebuild your journal bearing turbo!
    I'm using a brand new Audi RS2 Turbo, K24-7200, but this should apply to all K24/K26 turbos used in Audis, Porsches, and Volvos. T3/T4 Turbos should also be similar, with some slight differences in internal parts/order. Why am I disassembling a BRAND NEW turbo? Although it was new, it had some surface rust from sitting on a shelf. I wanted to address this rust before it got worse, and protect it from chemicals and corrosion in the future, so I'll be coating it with Cerakote, a DIY friendly ceramic coating. This coating is good to 1800 degrees F, and resistant to all automotive chemicals; it's held up great so far!

    Notes:
    - The audio from this project was completely hosed because I'm an idiot and forgot to swap the old gopro hero 3 into an open backed housing, the waterproof housing made the audio so quiet you could barely hear it. Lesson learned!
    - The shaft nut is REVERSE THREADED
    - Factory torque value for that nut is 13 ft/lbs. I was not using a torque wrench here becuase the alignment/balance was more important to me than the proper torque setting.
    - Mark your shaft, Nut, and Compressor wheel. The rotational assembly spins at insanely high RPMS, even a slight misbalance will affect the lifespan of your turbo bearings.
    - I should really be using a T-handle ratchet on the shaft nut; this evenly distributes the forces and prevents you from possibly bending the shaft. Do as I say, not as I do :P
    - I recommend that you have your turbocharger rotational assembly re-balanced after doing this; even if you mark the wheel/shaft location. Do as I say, not as I do :P
    Feel free to ask any questions and sub for more audi 5 cylinder content, cheers!

    Nice video!!! Very satisfying to see a turbo taken apart.

      Thanks. Was even more satisfying to put it back together once it was all coated w Cerakote. It's holding up decent, CHRA has some corrosion but I blame myself on being a bit too timid with the sand blaster. Turbine housing looks identical to the video, but I actually didn't have fear of blasting that.

      Thanks! Yeah, I've been sitting on this footage for almost 2 years, was super bummed about the audio.

      @@ADDvanced consider recording a voice-over and make an overlay to the video. But anyway, the value of this video is so high that I'm watching every second of it just to make sure I didn't miss anything. Huge thanks!!!

      @@audiemblems Appreciate the compliments and the suggestion! Might do that at some point. Honestly was just so pissed that the audio was garbage I gave up, and my other popular Audi vid has no voice whatsoever (RS2 upgrade on my avant)

    What size is the Ribe bit you used? I'll be rebuilding my K24 but don't want to buy the whole set of bits.

      It's been a while, so I'm not exactly sure anymore. This is the kit I ordered, and I am very happy with teh quality of the bits so far:

    Did you replace any of the components, or was this just to clean and paint it?

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  Před 4 lety

      Nope, it was a brand new turbo. Everything was new inside.

    @atanaspopovski3770 Před 3 lety

    Did make vsr balancing after that?

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  Před 3 lety

      No, I scribed the shaft/locknut before assembly and reassembled in same orientation. Every place that did balancing that I could find just wanted the shaft/wheels/nut so it would require scribing and reassembling anyway.

    360 degree trust bearing and billett comp whell are esential....due to very old style of that turbocharger!

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  Před 3 lety

      Those are upgrades, not essentials. This was a NOS RS2 turbo, with zero miles on it. Stock is fine unless you want to go even faster. Adding a billet wheel would also require rebalancing.
