The difference between Massialas's fencing in this video vs in 2016 reminds me of the difference in Kleibrink's style between 2008 and 2020. They're doing the same signature actions, but because they're slower overall, they're not setting the tempo in the same way. This bout feels like Itkin is doing whatever he wants, and Massialas is being dragged along with him. Obviously he's is probably tired after fencing a ton of DE's beforehand, plus credit must be given to Itkin's incredible footwork and timing, but still an interesting observation.
Very perceptive re: Kleibrink. Completely agree with you assessment here - classic moves that used to work, but the miles on the clock have removed a lot of the sharpness that gave them their old edge
Itkin is a beast
It would be very difficult to adjust to Nick super fast tempo and timing. If you are used to a parry riposte tempo and now your opponent can hit you twice with remise then parry your riposte, you will have to readjust your timing big time.
Itkin has a beautiful, perfect lunge.
I never realised itkin was taller than massialas!
