    Would love to see people doing their job properly. I understand that not many people watch this sport, but if we put in just a little more effort to make sure the video does not fail a simple quality check, maybe more people would pick up on it. Media is a very powerful tool, let us use it correctly. It is not the first time that the audio is out of sync, the video quality is often pretty bad, and many times the camera is shaking. Replay is random, some very important actions dont get a replay, other times we miss actions because the previous simultaneous attack gets replayed in slowmo for the second time. Plus it would be amazing if the commentators would make an effort to explain each action so that people can learn the sport. It is boring and in my opinion disrespectful to chat about meaningless fun-facts instead of trying to understand and explain the mind-games going on on the piste between the two fencers.

      I agree with the technical quality and the need for replays. It is difficult, because that is expensive technology and fencing is not a big money sport. David King is not a fencer as such and Bruce Dickinson is the vocalist with Iron Maiden. Bruce was a really decent foilist is his day top 10 in GBR. But yes, more technical description would have been good here. You cannot describe the basic of the weapon each time, but some idea of the though processes of the fencers helps. Opening and closing distance to provoke reactions form each other. Anticipating the other fencer's action to exploit an opening etc. At the same time it is interesting to the fun facts are actually fun to the fencers who are watching.

    There is a fencing saying worth remembering: "Never change a winning game, but never continue a losing one". Alex makes too many compound attacks (with a bent elbow) and Gerek knows this. Consequently, Gerek knew that he could effectively counterattack and "steal" the time. He did that over and over and Alex did not change his game. Also, and equally important, Alex needs to work on his "core" stability - to maintain his torso's balance over his legs (good examples of what I'm talking about include both Race Imboden and Gerek Meinhardt on the USA squad - and also the entire Italian Team is another example of this). Alex's unfortunate and repeated loss of balance creates an inability to take small, short parries and, inevitably, each parry and counter-parry are wider and wider (way out there). The net result is that his point is further and further away from his opponent's target area making lightning ripostes more difficult to achieve. Frankly, I don't know if Alex can now modify his fencing. Things are by now so ingrained that a "do-over" may not be feasible. Don't get me wrong, Alex is a wonderful fencer with really great skills and I like him immensely but I can't help thinking how much better he could be.

    Thank you for sharing the video, however the sound is out of sync by over 1 second... all sounds are before the actions making it a chore to watch.

    I appreciate ketchup's complaint and intelligent commentary. I am an ex-collegiate fencer and was interested in viewing expert duelists at the peak of their game. For a while--a very frustrating time!--I thought my old eyes were really deceiving me. The narration would cheer for a hit that I just missed! It took me some time before realizing how badly out of-synch the audio is.
    Hello CZcams administrators! ~ You really ought to post a WARNING to new viewers. Otherwise, I am sure a misleading video like this can drive NEW watchers AWAY from the sport I love.

    Like some other people mentioned, this sport is pretty hard to follow, and the quality of footage makes it even harder. Anyone have any tips for following the action? Should i be focusing on the swords, or their footwork. How can I better follow the action when it all happens so fast and the swords are so slender?

    • @evgenybelilovskiy1205
      @evgenybelilovskiy1205 Před 3 lety

      If you are new to fencing, intricacies of footwork won't tell you much. Look at where the fencers are moving, and who is parrying (blocking). If they both hit at the same time, the advancing fencer gets the point. Likewise if the other does a parry, and reposts (counterattacks), they get the point.
      Foils can be floppy swords, so flicks are nearly impossible to follow and can reach speeds of close to 70mph.

      @kismetrina Před 3 lety +1

      @@evgenybelilovskiy1205 Thanks for taking the time. I've gotten a bit better at following the action by simply watching more and more. I still have to remind myself what the rules are for the different weapon classes from time to time.

      yeah basically. old fencing teacher used to tell us, fights usually go one of three ways. i kill you, you try and stop me but i kill you, or we both kill each other. if it takes longer than 10 secs for someone to land a hit its considered to be long.
