  • Region locking - when a stream or disc only works in a certain part of the world - is super-common and super-annoying. Why and how is it implemented?

You know where content isn't region locked? Pirate sites. As long as region-locking exists, so will piracy in the regions which are locked out.

The best part for me are those fucking unskippable useless "anti-piracy" messages you get on every blu ray you buy. Because I just paid 30 bucks for a movie disc only to have fucking messages from the FBI threatening me for up to a minute before playing like I just pirated the thing.
You know who doesn't get any of those fucking warnings? The pirates themselves. So unless they are trying to convince me to pirate content instead I don't see the reasoning behind not making those messages skippable at the very least.

Fun Fact: in the early 2000s, when Region Free DVD players were starting to appear, companies in America decided to create DVDs which were called "Region Code Enhanced". These Region 1 DVDs couldn't be played on Region Free players, only at Region 1 players. This however, could be broken easily, simply by placing a Region 1 (normal) DVD to the machine for some seconds, removing it, placing the Enhanced disc and it would play normally. The RCE plan collapsed and was abandoned.

I guess its only for me, as the closest VPN for them is pretty far away, so basically I get 10% of my internet speeds (form 100/100Mbit to 10/10Mbit max)... Also, I tried Netflix and Hulu... both of them were blocking TunnelBear VPN's from USA that I tried...

    • @HeyImLucious

That's the problem with "big" VPN companies- they get known. Its good and bad- good b/c more customers but bad b/c now region locked sites know to look out for them.
If I may offer a suggestion, this site is pretty much the VPN wiki. Tells you about different kinds and what kind you should get to suit your needs. Also, it has a pretty nice spreadsheet thing that lists and compares a bunch of VPN providers (most small-mid sized providers but it has some big names in there as well).
Hopefully it helps you out if you're looking to get a better VPN :)

Because Tunnel Bear don't want to say you can use it to do this!! Even though we all know it, they want to be known for the politically correct things - "TunnelBear, the gorgeous VPN app that wants to bring online privacy to everyone." or "TunnelBear is an elegant, easy mobile VPN that keeps you safe." NOT this is a great way around things certain companies/governments don't want you to be able too..

It's old hat marketing that was the best profitable practise for decades and is now outdated and obsolete.
In the 70s, 80s, 90s if a movie is designed to be a big summer blockbuster, they will release it in summer in each location to maximise on box office sales. Since VHS/DVD sales would follow box office release less than a year later, this could result in the VHS release in one country being earlier than the box office release in another market.
It's what they did for decades and it worked. The film and music industries are so adverse to the reality that is new technology, so instead of figure out an alternative, they will continue to enforce copyright claims on content, harass uploaders, refuse to sell to otther countries, in an attempt to keep their old structure running.
Then when the later release in another country is a total flop (because everyone's already seen it) they will blame piracy, not their outdated, unrealistic and silly business model that relies on the internet not existing, on their lack of profits.

Exactly. I might be an odd one out, but sometimes I like watching films originally made in English that have been dubbed into another language. And NTSC NA DVDs are usually stuck with 1, 2 or 3 language tracks that consist of either English, Canadian French and/or Spanish.
I've come across some DVDs that only offer English, some that offer only English and Spanish or English and French and some that have all 3, but a majority include all 3.
I've come across at least 2 different North American BluRays that have multiple language tracks, and those are We're Back A Dinosaur's Story and I believe an early release of the first Harry Potter movie, I may have seen later releases only include English, Spanish and French but don't quote me on that.

In my opinion, Indian DVDs & Blu-ray discs (not talking about pirated ones) have usually never had any region locking issues; DVDs are usually either region-free or combine several codes (usually Regions 1, 2, 4 and 5), along with being NTSC or PAL. This is probably due to the ubiquitous Indian diaspora around the world; hence in order to cater to them, home media from their native country is made easily accessible abroad. However, since a lot of North American home media is region-locked, the vice-versa does not generally work in India.

Angry at region locking since I stepped on the rakes twice now. Bought a phone in a local store and gave it to a cousin who lives in another region. It didn't work when he came to his homeland. He took it to original Samsung centre which charged 50 euros just to take the region lock off. The second time, bought a smartphone to my brother and sent it to his region. Guess what... The seller doesn't provide any warranty despite that a full price was paid with no tie to any single carrier. My question to whoever invented the region lock is, can this be taken down for smartphones? Enraged by this.

Both points don't make sense. If there are technological barriers, then by all means, put region labels on devices, but don't go out of the way to stop people from watching movies. As for copyright, for one, wouldn't I need to buy the movie/game in the region it was released, thus ensuring the makers get their cuts? And if I am unable to view the movie legally, isn't that MORE of a reason to pirate it?

Tiktok seems to have some formal region locking. Sometimes I'll come across a video with no sound and if you click on the audio button of the video it will say sound not available in your country. However if that content creator has video saving enabled if you save the video to your phone you will get the original audio.

I purchased a DVD boxset some years back (can't remember what) and was initially disappointed when I discovered it was region locked. But after some research I found a couple websites claiming many DVD players had the ability to change the region with a certain input of button presses on the remote. I know, bullsh?t.....but what could it hurt?
After looking up my DVD player model and punching in the code provided, an extremely plain menu popped up that had a list of regions to pick from and the option to select all (that's what I chose). I was able to unlock both of our DVD players plus a portable one, and even a couple friend's DVD players as well. Does anyone remember doing this?

Another reason for this is different age restrictions in different countries. If you buy DVD or Bluray from country you're in, it's no problem. The best way to get around it, if it is a problem, is to use a non well known brand player. As they are all-zone players. The chips in these are all-zoned and at the start, player buttons were pushed to select a certain zone.

Region locking can sometimes backfire when a person's DVD player came from abroad. My first DVD player was a U.S. model PS2 system which is R1 but I'm from the Philippines where most original DVD are R3 and won't work forcing me to buy pirated DVD movies because I have no choice. When DVD format was new a stand alone DVD player was more expensive than a PS2 system that using a PS2 system as a DVD player was not uncommon.
