I wasn’t going to comment but, oh well. Hi everyone it’s me the banshee bandit here. To answer some questions about why she wasn’t arrested I live in a rural town and in most cases the cops would only let her off with a warning. And also to clarify she thought she was entitled to the scooter because she was old and to her only old people should be allowed to use said scooter. It sucked but banning her was a lot more affective in this case. And thankfully I have yet to run into her again.

My mom has an “invisible disability” she has MS. The number of people that have harassed her for using disabled parking is ridiculous. If it’s too warm she can’t faint and her legs become incredibly weak. She has little balance, so ice is a bitch. And she has two herniated disks in her back so she can’t lift or push heavy things. I help her out as often as I can, groceries and Costco runs are the ones I help the most with, I even get really dirty looks while I load the car. I force my mom to sit in the car after shopping trips, and I load the car to avoid aggravating her back and to make her rest in AC so she can cool down. It’s so utterly irritating that people think that all disable people look exactly the same.

In South Africa there is a massive and violent cultural stigma against people with albinism. We're talking commonplace himan rights atrocities, including human sacrifice for use in "magic" rituals. Sounds made up, but it's a big problem that human rights organizations have been trying to battle for ages

    • @MyWingsAreMyDream
      @MyWingsAreMyDream Před 15 dny +23

This part. Not saying that the man is justified AT ALL, but...he lives in a community where albino people are judged harshly and treated like outcasts, so I empathize with his view. This is why it's important to let go of superstitions and get educated on genetics. I mean, he is an a-hole, but I can also understand that he was raised in a society that taught him albinism is something to be ashamed and not normal. It's no different than racism.

I remember reading a story about this when I was a teen, and what haunted me most about it was the concept that these people were viewed not as lesser people, but literally *not people at all.* There was one recounting from a young adult about an albino man who lived in their neighborhood when they were a child, until one day he just… disappeared. They said that, at the time, they didn’t see it as anything odd, as ‘we were told albinos were like ghosts, and would simply vanish after a while.’

@@MyWingsAreMyDreamCrazy thing is that the chances of having an albino child is higher in certain parts of the world like some countries in Southern Africa (I wanna say it’s like 1 in 1,000). And a lot of people are carriers of the gene and don’t even know it.

South African here and yes, there are some scary stigmas here. I wish you were wrong but exactly that, I wish it WAS made up! Cry our beloved country. Lobola (bride price) and polygamous marriages are a thing too. There are multiple cultures and tribal beliefs at play to add to it all.

I first learned about that years ago as I was doing some research as part of my job because I worked with people who have disabilities. I had a client with albinism and I needed to learn some more information about their condition. When I stumbled across this, I broke down and cried and had to go out to my car for a while to pull myself together. It shattered my heart and it still hurts to know these horrible things are done on these people who are completely innocent.

As a South African we do not claim this man. Unfortunately this discrimination in South Africa among Albino people is very real its gotten better but especially in rural areas the discrimination against Albinism can get quite severe its usually brought on due to a lack of education about Albinism and superstition.

I'm relived to hear that acceptance of albinos is starting to happen. Slowly is much better than not at all. So many babies never got to live their lives due to the superstition & fear. I have Sth African friends.
So I was cruising the comments to explain the culture & superstition attached to albinism, if there wasn't a Sth African who beat me to it.
It is so easy for westerners & established countries to forget that they live a life of privilege, opulence and knowledge (though intelligence seems optional these days) that a large part of the worlds population couldn't even imagine, nor ever experience.

My heart goes out to those who have dealt with this, especially those with hidden disabilities because they have no way of proving it. No one should ever have to feel they need to share their own person medical information with anyone who has no business knowing. Also, and obviously, no one has the right to know someone else's medical history, unless it's applicable, like with their doctor.

I knew arguing was useless because of previous encounters. So I sat on a bench and waited. The police arrived 20 minutes later and she starts ranting about me illegally parking. One officer comes over and asks for my side. I said she blocked me in because she said I wasn't allowed to park there even with the placard. As I'm saying this I remove my shoe which contains my foot prosthetic, showing I have half a foot. I ask the officer if I need to have more removed to use the spot even with the placard. I was told I was good to go. She ended up with a couple of tickets and a warning about calling 911 needlessly.

I can't walk, but I don't look disabled, so I've been through similar situations. My husband was pushing my wheelchair through the hospital when a man stopped in front of us and asked if he could have my wheelchair. I just said, "No," and hubby pushed me past the guy. The guy followed us, and clarified, "It's not for me, it's for my mother, she needs it." My husband was annoyed at his persistence, and replied, "So does my wife." The guy kept following us, and said, "You don't understand, my mother is 96, and she can't walk far." Hubby then said, "Do you expect me to tip my wife out of the wheelchair, so your mother can have it? Maybe your mother can't walk far, but my wife can't walk at all!" The guy looked at me, and said, "You don't look disabled." I couldn't help myself, I said, "Would if help if I drooled and pissed myself!" He stormed off after that. I've had a few encounters like that over the years.

I am a disabled person. I have what is often called a "silent, or invisible disability" because it's not readily obvious. My favorite Karen encounter:
Was shopping at Costco a few days before Xmas. Was delighted to actually find an open disabled parking space. As I get out of my car a woman pushes her cart into the area beside the disabled space next to me that is for extending a ramp for a wheelchair to exit a vehicle. As I get out of my car, I asked her politely not to leave her cart there because it would interfere with the person's ability to get back in their van. She told me that *I* should put her cart away because I "didn't look disabled." I responded with, "What a coincidence, YOU don't *look* stupid."
    Damn, that felt good 😊

I also have a silent disability. I have RA and hypermobility, its at the point I'm now on the list for surgery for my knee. I'm 33. Unless I'm having a severe flare up then I can't walk, you can't see my pain. I've had so many nasty comments over the years. Because I work I can't possibly have a disability. They don't see the days of crippling pain, barely being able to move some days.

The first story reminds me of when my dad almost threw hands with someone over using a handicap parking spot. He was driving and got out of the car first. A random person started yelling at him for using the handicap spot when he isn’t handicapped. This person failed to notice my mother getting out of the passenger seat with her walker as I also helped her get stabilized. The stranger was ranting from their car and my dad mostly ignored it and told them to mind their own business. They continued to yell and my dad snapped. I never really see my dad get mad often, but he stormed over to the stranger and screamed “DO YOU NOT SEE MY WIFE?! OR MY DAUGHTER HELPING HER?! OR IS IT YOUR LIFE MISSION TO BE A MISERABLE A-HOLE?!” Immediate silence. The person mumbled “I’m sorry” and left with their tail between their legs. My mom felt a bit embarrassed by the whole thing but I LOVED IT. A couple other people in the parking garage that saw the whole ordeal came over to ask if we were okay and told my dad that he’s a great husband. My parents are both really calm individuals, so seeing him get that riled up was intense. But he did it for the woman he loves! Couple goals!

I knew a woman from West Africa who had albino children there. From what she told me, albino girls in her country are raped by random men. Albino people are killed and maimed. Now, this woman was perhaps 70 years old, and these circumstances happened in the 20th Century, but that was not so long ago. She was concerned for her children and did protect them by keeping them in the house when they were younger. Later, she took them to Europe, where they would be safer. In her case, the husband later had albino children with another woman, too. This story about a man being unable to love his albino children rings really true to me.

The first story, the Banshee story, happens more often than not. I use a rollator/wheelchair depending on the day I'm having medically, and people are incredibly rude quite often. I was at the dairy case looking at cheese and I actually had a nasty Karen tapping her feet at me as if I was in her way, which I wasn't. I try to be very polite and never block an aisle or path. Seriously Hagatha??? I then rolled closer to the case and completely blocked it from her, perused the cheese a little longer just for fun, grabbed a bag and smiled at her and rolled off. This Hag followed me into every aisle I went in. Being the petty 62 yr old that I am, I finally asked her wtf her problem was? Her response, priceless. Disabled shouldn't be shopping during busy times of the day or at all. I looked at her, this was before the Karen movement, told her what a despicable piece of crap she is, that she should never be around humans and to go Eff herself and rolled off laughing. Yep, she was speechless because someone called her bluff. I usually tell them to have a Heavenly Day!!! 😂😂😂

Sadly even now in 2024, some people have the audacity to say that disabled people should not bother « normal people ».
Anything is an eyesore for them anyway: we do our grosseries shopping? Do it when nobody can see you. We go to the bank/post office/city hall etc? Do it another time (when? At midnight when they are closed?). We take public transport? Any time of the day is a bother for abled people too .
I am disabled since birth with twisted legs that makes me limp, and it’s getting worse as years goes by. Even now, I am still reluctant to use my priority card for disabled people in supermarkets because I know that people will suddenly all be medical experts and say that I am not « disabled enough » (did I mention that my muscles are weak and hurt like being sliced by knives?).
The last time I decided to use it because I was exhausted and still had a medical appointment to reach, a middle-aged woman told me she couldn’t let me pass in front of her showing her broken wrist, saying she was « kind of disabled too » (didn’t know that an injured wrist prevent you to wait a little more 🙄 ). Fortunately the lady behind made some space for me, but the middle-aged hag kept complaining about her wrist saying that « she didn’t know it would take so long to heal » so I told her with my brightest « eat shit » smile « Welcome to my world! Except that I will never heal. ».
She didn’t get the message sadly and continued to complain as if I was supportive of her predicament. 😤 The poor cashier gave me some « sorry about that » side eyes.

The first story reminded me of a guy who had sustained a brain injury while in the military. I met him while working at a bank inside Wal-Mart. He had his own cart to ride in because he couldn't walk. This old woman walked up behind him and told him he didn't need it. My manager jumped to his defense so quickly, and the lady was so embarrassed when she realized.
Don't assume someone is faking a disability.

I am from South Africa and a fellow redhead and love your channel! Some cultural facts to give some context for that story time: Paying money or cattle, known as "lobola", to the family of the bride is common among specific African cultures as a way of showing respect to the family. If ones wife is found out to be "barren", this can result in the marriage ending and a return of the lobola. Polygamy is also practiced in these communities - our former President Jacob Zuma currently has 4 wives. It is definitely an out dated view of women, but it is common for an African male to be seen as the most important person in the room. So much so, that making direct eye contact with an older male can be considered disrespectful. Not all South Africans have these views of women or engage in these practices, but it is absolutely something that multiple cultures still adhere to.

My twin sister and I had foot surgeries when we were around 12 years old. My mom took us to the grocery store because we had been bed ridden for about a month at this point (full leg casts up to our thighs, mind you). So instead of using crutches around the entire store, we got on the riding carts. Some lady had the audacity to tell my mom "you know those aren't toys!" To which my mom proceeded to gesture to our full leg casts and crutches in the basket and said "do they look like they can walk normally to you?!" The lady shut up and went about her day then, but seriously, why do they think they're the cart police?! 🤣🤣🤣

When I was a teen, I had knee surgery and my leg was immobilized for a month following. My knee stiffened and I needed my crutches even after healing because I literally couldn’t bend my knee which made stairs difficult. Even once off my crutches, I needed to use the elevator because I couldn’t yet bend my knee enough to go up stairs. It’s amazing when people make assumptions or get annoyed because they feel you are getting “special treatment “

I wasn't allowed to put pressure on that leg for a least a month though and that's hard as it is.

As an auntie of 3 children with albinism, it’s actually an occurrence in the dna as a matter of both parents blending together. It’s not a fault of one parents dna specifically, it’s to do with what happens when the individuals mix their dna. Very interesting stuff. There was only a 25% chance the next children after the first with albinism were going to have albinism and all were born this way. Each type of albinism is different also! There are various symptoms to each type. Some are very very sad cases and the lifespan is significantly shorter. 😢 Thank you for bringing awareness to this topic so gracefully Charlotte. I fought to get disability but they kept focusing on my age and the fact that I went to Greece to visit family 🙄 it’s like they want people to be completely bedridden and old to qualify for disability. Like what does age have to do with health issues? There are babies that have cancer and elderly people that can move around better than I can

Evidently they told the prosecutor that they were going to sue me for their hospital bills and missed work. Because of the video evidence and testimonies he couldn't see them finding a lawyer that would take the case. I guess they didn't because I never heard from them.
