    EPISODE 29: T&E TO GO features a full tutorial & review of Reiner Knizia's 2005 card game EUPHRATES & TIGRIS: CONTEST OF KINGS. I consider this game the little brother of Knizia's masterpiece Tigris & Euphrates, which is in my top ten games of all time (check out my top ten list in Episode 1 of my video podcast). Euphrates & Tigris is a card game implementation of Tigris & Euphrates with a couple small differences. For example, in the card game, your cards are also your points, so you must manage your hand a little differently than the board game. In the video, I do a full & thorough teach of this game (as if you've never played any form of T&E). You could probably use this tutorial to help you better understand the board game too.
    In this episode, I also review Euphrates & Tigris in detail and discuss some similarities and differences between the card game and the board game. This card game is such a hidden gem! As of now, you can find it much cheaper than the board game, and it gives you about 80% the same experience as the board game in a much smaller box and a much faster play time! I haven't ranked all the card games in my collection, but I would say this is probably my favorite card game. It's such a brilliantly simple concept woven perfectly into a deeply complex game. If you've never played T&E in any form, I would recommend starting out with this card game. It's a perfect stepping stone into the board game.
    RULES CLARIFICATIONS: Regarding collecting treasure cards with the green leader, whichever player's green leader is in that newly merged kingdom can immediately collect treasure. It does not have to be the active player. Comment below with any more questions!

    Your game group is lucky to have you as a teacher. I really like how you went about teaching this game. I have played the t&e board game a couple times but the rules have always been my biggest hurdle. You did a great job starting with the simple concepts and then building on those into more complex stuff. You showed clear examples and I didnt get lost once. Have you ever considered making a tutorial for the t&e board game? I have tried watching all the t&e tutorial vids out there but none have been this good. Crystal clear tutorial.

      Thanks for the kind words! T&E is a game I really champion because I feel like people struggle to grasp the various strategies and nuances. I strongly believe this card game & the board game require at least 3 plays to really start to make any sense... and even more plays to really start to develop meaningful strategies.

    WUT???? Tigris and Euphrates has a card game???? This looks fantastic! Based on your awesome tutorial, I would say this looks very similar to the board game. Which is cool because I would LOVE a smaller and faster version of the board game. Thanks for making this video. 🔥🔥🔥

      Happy to share this one with the world! In my experience, not many people are even aware of this game’s existence! I think it fills an interesting niche in the T&E world. Hope you get to try it sometime! Thanks for the comment!

    Wow!!! This video blew my mind in 2 ways: First, I’ve loved T&E for 10 years and no one has ever explained the set collection scoring the way you did. Ive had similar experiences with new players not grasping the “least is your points” scoring, and your way totally makes sense! I’m using that from now on.
    Second, Ive never heard of this game, never knew it existed!! That’s why I love this channel. I know all about T&E, Y&Y, and the new reprint Huang… never once have I heard about a CARD game version of T&E. Seriously?? This looks friggin awesome!!
    Anyway, mind blown. Excellent tutorial. Thanks so much for making these videos. Saving this one for sure!

      That’s awesome! Thanks for the comment! I’m sure I’m not the first to think of it, but I got the idea from Knizia’s game Ilium a couple years ago. The scoring basically works the same way, but that game teaches it as set collection. And I was like hmmmm, this scoring is like T&E! Anyway, I appreciate your comment and I’m so glad you enjoyed the video!! 😎

      Look at you with the Looting London comment! I’ve never heard anyone talk about that one. That’s a very cool little Knizia game! You’re correct, it’s NOTHING alike. But I can definitely see the visual similarity with the card columns!

    Another great video! These have been consistently clear and concise! I really feel like I have a strong understanding of how these games play after watching one of your videos.
    I have been wanting to try T&E or Y&Y after recently trying more of these amazing Knizia games. So, I was pumped when I saw this one post. Oh, this started out so promising, but by halfway through I felt a little lost in the quagmire of fiddlie rule nuances. I can see how this game would be apt to many situational clarifications. Especially at more than 2 players. My gut tells me that having everything gridded out on a player board might at least visually help with those issues. I would totally love to give this a try if playing with someone who really understands it.
    Thanks again, always looking forward to your next one!
    Any chance you are familiar with the game Comuni? It's been sitting on my shelf for about a year. I wish there was a good tutorial for it, but I haven't come across one. It feels like a real gem, but I am just not sure if I am interpreting the rules 100% If you do enjoy this one, I guess you could consider this as a request for a future video! 😊

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the comment! Regarding this game's rules, you are correct. This is more fiddly than I typically enjoy. It definitely requires a few plays for it to really start to click. But once it clicks, it sticks! I don't have any issues recalling the rules if I haven't played in awhile. And once you're familiar with it, it's so much fun. Also, that's why I champion this card game so much, because in my experience, new players grasp the concepts better in this card game form (again, just my personal experience). Plus the card game is the easiest version to find right now.
      Another thing to consider if you're interested in Y&Y is there is a really good digital app for Y&Y. It costs around $10, and it is a great way to learn the concepts of the game. Y&Y plays very similar to T&E. The biggest difference is the hexagon grid vs. the square grid. Y&Y is probably my favorite app out there (mostly because I love the game so much, but also because it's a great board game app!).
      Regarding Comuni, I have not played it, but I did a little research and it looks exactly like the type of game I love to discover! I will definitely add it to my list, and who knows? Maybe you'll see a tutorial from me in the future!
      Thanks for all your comments and support! I put a lot of work into making these videos as clear and understandable as possible. I sometimes worry these tutorials last too long, but I feel it's better to cover all the rules and give lots of examples. Personally I would rather watch a longer tutorial and learn all the rules, rather than a tutorial that skims over the game. Anyway, I am glad you're enjoying the channel!! Cheers!

    Another excellent video! Tigris and Euphrates is a top 5 boardgame for me and probably #1. This version has had some negative reviews but it is odd that I haven't considered getting it considering how cheap it is. I trust your taste in games and the vibe from your review has me interested now. A few other thoughts, I own Yellow and Yangtze and and enjoy it but still prefer T and E. I do recommend the Yellow and Yangtze app for phones and Steam. This card game version of a board game got me thinking of another off the radar game called Cardcassonne. Yeah, the card game version of Carcassonne. This game has been super popular with my game groups lately. Unlike E and T, Cardcassonne has almost nothing in common with its parent game. It's a push your luck, bluffing game that is actually pretty original in its game play. I highly recommend it. Have you heard of or played it? Looking forward to your next video!

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games  Před 7 měsíci +1

      It always makes me happy to talk to other players who still play and love T&E. I feel like it just doesn't get the love it deserves these days. I don't think players give it enough plays to really get good. I always say it takes 3+ plays for T&E to start to click, and then even more plays to really start developing strategies and things like that. Like you said, the Y&Y app is a great intro to this system, too. I haven't played the Y&Y board game, but from the app, I can tell I definitely prefer T&E all day every day. The square grid, the colors and how they resolve battles, etc. all make more sense to me in T&E, and I would argue make for a more tense, crunchy game.
      I have not played Cardcassonne, but I am somewhat familiar with it and it's actually on my want list currently! Someone else recommended that to me about a year ago and I researched it. I sorta forgot about it, though, so thanks for jogging my memory. I will have to move it up on the priority list now!!
      Have you ever played the card game version of Samurai? I hear that's another good one, but I haven't tried it yet. Thanks for the comment, as always. Happy gaming!

      @@undiscovered_games I agree with all of your comments on T and E. I am actually a fairly new fan of all things Knizia. Before the pandemic boardgames were a small hobby of mine. Catan, Carc, Ticket to Ride and a few other games like King of Tokyo. I really got sucked in to exploring boardgames in the past few years. I have realized I like some of the new games that come out but old school Euros are the best, and T and E is the best of the best! Of course I had to try Samurai once I found T and E, it is also a favorite of mine. Samurai is probably the most stressful game I have ever played but in a good way. I have heard of the card game version but not played it, time to put that one on my radar!

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games  Před 7 měsíci

      That's awesome you are fairly new to this yet somehow you didn't fall prey to the cult of the new! That's kinda rare; it seems like most people who got into this hobby fairly recently only focus on the new stuff. Congratulations for not following the trends and exploring on your own!
      My wife and I started big into this hobby around 2011. Early on we didn't realize there were so many different "tastes" in gaming. But over time we found ourselves gravitating toward these older designs. Unfortunately it took a lot of learning and purchasing new releases we ended up not liking. Nowadays, we hardly pay attention to the new games that come out each year.
      That being said, I did really enjoy 3 Ring Circus, which was released this year. Sadly it got mixed reviews from all the "cult of the new" reviewers, to the point where I started getting frustrated because it was obvious they had either only played the game once or twice, or they just didn't like the game because it felt "dated." But that's exactly why I loved it! It plays like an old-school euro with great player interaction, multi-use cards, area majority, awesome artwork. It was really a breath of fresh air in this modern world of overproduced & overpriced games.
      I'm rambling, sorry! It's just nice to know there are gamers out there who still prefer the older games! Keep spreading the T&E love!

    This is a very cheap game, and knowing that Tigris and Euphrates is out of print, and very expensive in the second hand market - I just printed a map and used the components of this game to play the board game version. But now, I also made PNP tiles of the board game, and using the cards of this game for points.
