    EPISODE 28: Bathyscaphe Bingo features a full tutorial & first impressions review of SUBMARINE. This undiscovered game from 2004 was designed by Leo Colovini with beautiful artwork by Michael Menzel. In this unforgiving race to fill up your "bingo card" of unique treasures, you will cleverly jockey for position with your submarines (aka bathyscaphes) in an effort to collect these treasures without paying too many cards to your opponents. The game is all about pacing, timing, and reacting to your opponents. While the rulebook is a bit confusing on some rules, I did lots of research to ensure I got the correct interpretations. The nice thing is the rule set is pretty light, so hopefully this video will help you learn how to play properly, and also help you decide if this is a game for you! It's a bit abstract, but the visuals really help bring the game to life. I find the game to be quite intriguing with some fun player-driven depth to explore!

    I like that you don't gloss over important points and you always show examples when certain rules may be unclear. I feel like I am sitting at the table with you and you always seem to answer the questions I would have if I was sitting right there! I would much rather watch a tutorial that takes a little longer to watch so I can fully understand the game from the video. So many tutorials I watch they try to teach the game in 3 minutes or whatever but then I still have to read the rulebook. I always have questions, but you always seem to answer them in your tutorials. Keep sharing these undiscovered games with us! I love your channel and I definitely want to try Submarine now!

      Thank you so much for the kind words, and I’m glad my tutorials are resonating with you! I try to be thorough when I make these, so I’m glad that came across in the videos. I definitely plan to keep the videos coming as long as my subscribers go up!! Hope you get to try Submarine sometime soon! Cheers!

      Brutal is correct! My original title for the episode was "Brutal Bathyscaphe Bingo" haha. It's definitely a grind & can be punishing when you run out of cards, but I find it to be quite a unique design. The key is the game doesn't last too long.

      Yeah man! I’ve been on a little Colovini kick lately. I still think Shangri La is my fav. For the longest time, I only ever played Shangri La and Cartagena, and then I got to play Clans & Carolus last year for the first time. And now I’m starting to appreciate some of his lesser known designs.

    Submarine looks fun, just ordered it! I think Colovini doesn't have many fans in the USA because Tom Vasel has more than once said he isn't a fan of his games. No disrespect to Tom, he is a great reviewer in the hobby and it is reasonable that many games won't jive with him. I didn't seek out any of Colovini's games based on his comments but I ended up giving Masons a try and I am a fan of most of his games now! Lots of good games already mentioned in the thread already but I will throw Vabanque out there as another excellent Colovini game. Ironically Vabanque is one of the few Colovini games Tom Vasel actually likes!

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Great comment, thanks! I agree with you. Tom is an excellent reviewer with whom I agree most of the time, and he certainly is a major reason for my love of the hobby over the past 10 years. But he also has a ton of sway over whether a game becomes popular or not. I’ve learned to do more research before I buy a game for myself, and I trust my instincts when I think it’s something I’ll like. Developing a refined taste in games is an art itself, and I really enjoy that part of the hobby! (Another reason I’m seeing for the potential lack of Colovini love in the USA is all these rulebooks are horribly written haha!).
      I hope you enjoy Submarine. It seems 3-4p is the common favorite player count. I’ll certainly check out Vanbaque. It just might make an appearance here on the channel! 😎

      Good point about the rulebooks. Another point about Colovini games is that they don't seem to play intuitively for me. That might make writing a rulebook difficult. I am still not completely confident I am even making good moves half the time when I play games like Clans and Bridges of Shang RiLa. I really like the games but the strategy is kind of cloudy. I like it though, it makes for interesting experiences.

      @@westaylor7078 yeah I agree, I enjoy games where the strategies are not spoonfed to you. I like when it takes more plays to get really good at a game.

    Great overview of the game, you sold me on it because I'm already wondering about how I would try and get ahead in it! If you say it feels more streamlined at 3, I think that would be the player count for me 🙂

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thanks for the comment! Yes, you should wonder how you will get ahead... because it can be absolutely brutal haha! It takes a learning game to get used to that flow, but that's also what makes the game great. I'm glad that idea came across in the video!
      BGG agrees that the best player count is 3. I would say it just depends on your style. More players probably means more tactical and more chaos. Fewer players means you can plan a little more. But I still don't know how well it would work at 2p. Let me know how you like the game. I hope you find it as interesting as I did!! Cheers!

    Have you played Red November? You're a gnome on a submarine that is constantly breaking down. It's a co-op where everyone is frantically trying to fix shit. You can even get a scuba suit to go out of the hatch and harpoon a kraken that's damaging the hull. You can drink booze to make your attempts have a higher chance to succeed but you might get hammered and pass out 😅. It's also in a tiny box, so it does take up much room..

    • @undiscovered_games
      @undiscovered_games  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I haven’t played it but it sounds like a co-op game I might enjoy! I don’t play many co-ops other than Shadows Over Camelot. Red November is going on my research list for sure! Thanks for the tip! 😎

      I used to own Red November. I liked it, but I could only rarely get anyone to play it, so I had to let it go. It has a much lighter and fun theme from other big name co-ops that I enjoy (like Pandemic), and it was the first game that I played that had a time-track for taking your actions.
