I downsized from a 2300 sq ft house to a 40 sq ft storage unit last month. It wasnt fun but it was pretty freeing. I kept keepsakes (old xmas ornaments, my moms diplomas and personal things). I'm sending all of my old photos to a digitizing center to store digitally & I kept a lot of my baking and kitchenware. I've lived in the country that I'm moving too before so it helped to know what I wouldn't be able to purchase again in the country I'm moving to. It took me almost a month straight to get everything done. Had yard sales, donated to womens shelters & goodwill. Sold a ton of things online. Did a few dump runs too. I still need to sell my car but its amazing what you can accomplish when you put your focus into it. I never thought Id get it all done but I did!

The best thing is get rid of everything and move with two suitcases. Leave the past life in the past by getting rid of everything and start a new life with new things.

Thank you for this--very practical tips added to acknowledgment of the emotional issues is very helpful. I'm moving internationally in the next year and I've been feeling pretty overwhelmed by the practicalities, but I feel better after watching you.

My stuff that I care about is all art. Things I painted or built and things people have sewn, built, or made for me. I can't ship it (can't use it or afford it where I am going) or store it (don't have any money). So I believe I am stuck trying to give it away to friends and hope they'll appreciate it. These are not things you can just replace in another country for less.

    Thank you for the tips!
I'm a rather minimalist person with few emotional attachments to things, but I love books! We're a big family moving abroad. We've decided to save all that money and just take what we need (some clothing, laptops, a few books and toys for kids) in the checked luggage. Anything else can get fedex'd to us in just a few boxes. Looking forward to a fresh start. I can totally get the "light a match" sentiment!
Plus, my hobby is sewing and my machine won't work where I'm going because of voltage. Great excuse to get a new machine lol

If you only have several average sized boxes, is it possible to have them mailed to Mexico or Central America (Panama)?

Would love to hear your wisdom on the shipping books question. That’s really all I want to move, but even a moderately-sized collection feels like a lot to ship! What are good services, and what are good box sizes for breaking up into lots?

what are some reliable cargo ship companies? We are going to only put what we need in a 40ft container. Everything else goes. I am getting knowwhere trying to get a ballpark idea...maersk gave me false info, I have filled out tons of online quotes. We have to still sell our property this summer, so won't be moving until fall. But need somewhere to start with basic basic info on cargo. Usa to poland.

This was super helpful! So, question... What is the best way to ship books to another country, if you don't have enough stuff for an entire container (and the country you're moving to doesn't have a security postal system)?

Question, do you have to eventually apply for citizenship in the country you live in after staying there for a certain amount of time? I know you would have to if your final decision is to live there pernamintly and be involved in with it's system like voting there? If you apply for citzenship in that country, does that mean you are no longer considered a U.S citizen if that country does not do dual citizenship? Are the moving companies who would move your items including your veheicle overseas associate with airlines? Do you know any companies who move your items long distance within the country and overseas? If yes, can you please name them? Do you know any international job application websites?

    • @queenb9668

Damn that sucks . My mom is a hoarder and my dad HATES it . There's no convincing her.
She has a piano , that I am the only one who knows to play as I was the only one taking piano lessons growing up. It broke 10 years ago and even when I offer to get her a new one at no cost to her , she refuses and says she will fix it one day . Which is weird because now that I think of it , whether she gets a new one or not , no one will ever play it lol.
She's done renovation but still chooses to keep an old unused sink that has no function . Not even attached to a wall 😅
I wish you the best of luck , a hoarder is no joke.
