I love how this starts off as the kind of generic low key flimsy pre-meeting “banter” and small talk that is now the norm in our daily post-Covid lives but quickly descends into premeditated chaos thanks to some extremely well cast villains. Excellent writing. This is the kind of stuff we need on the BBC.

This is the most addictive and gripping series I’ve ever watched
Better than any of the Netflix shows, and that's not me insulting netflix shows, there are some great series on there. But it's but than any of the Netflix shows.
The storyline is gripping, combining elements of realism and the general tedium and exhaustion of life. The Handforth Parish Council is some of the best television of the decade, in a world that is dragged down by illness and political turmoil. The characters partake in an intense battle of authority, removing people from meeting and badmouthing them live. You find yourself in tears over every insult exchanged, every snide comment made, everything that the characters would otherwise wish be not seen by millions.
It’s epic and speaks of man’s inhumanity to man.

When I heard ‘cuckoo sounds’ and ‘crotch shots’ in all the reviews, I thought the director had lost their way and just wanted to blow the budget to chase ratings. Having watched this, I can see it was all utterly essential to the narrative. I caught myself not breathing in parts...
It’s really difficult to weave stylistic choices such as these into a narrative. But, by God, (s)he’s done it!
Sue's "well I'm going to anyway" is a next level boss move.
Sue is the protagonist of the series we never knew we needed.

The writer was very good at foreshadowing future events in this installment, the calm before the storm, the origin story of why the three booted in the original were at edge with anti-hero Jackie Weaver, who was also depicted as carefully planting the seeds of her future influence here, where she definitely had the authority whether they liked it or not. The three antagonists are illustrated with clear parallels to their future outbursts, the Chairman appealing to the law, Burkhill protesting when the Chairman is interfered with, and Gollum speaking in tongues and ranting about subpoenas. David Pincombe got some welcome character development here too compared to his lackluster appearance in the original, and I was pleased to see the return of Sue, Cyn, John, Alan and Ian. Disappointed Peter couldn't make a reappearance in this installment though, leads to a plot hole regarding his "quite rightly" comment in the original regarding the Chairman being kicked in this installment. A great watch either way, can't wait for the sequel.

You can see the atmosphere of the call change, as soon as the standing orders are mentioned for the first time. It seems like there’s a bit of history there.

They did a really great job with the prequel, establishing Sue and Jacke's relationship strongly, and setting up the partnership between Handforth PC Clerk and Aled's iPad.

She use to have a camel clock but it gave her the hump, then she got a kangaroo clock but the time kept jumping, then she got a clock with cannibalistic numbers on it which was a disaster because 7 8 9, and then she got a marvel caged superheroes clock (where the superheroes are depicted as being captured) but the time on it was usually wrong because the hands kept on going on 2 3 4.

Usually I'm a bit dubious when a prequel comes out. But this one sets up the coming conflicts greatly. As well as doing a good job at expanding the characters motives and arcs.
All of this could've simply been avoided by reading and understanding the standing order

The jump back in time was unexpected, but welcome. Seems like the writers saw feedback and realized that they need to flesh out the character relationships.
