In this video, I demonstrate the proper method of draining, flushing, filling and bleeding a motorcycle disc brake master cylinder and caliper. It's basically the same for all makes, models and brands. Bad ass easy!

If your brake fluid is ever so dirty that it is black, do not flush that dirty fluid through your brake caliper. All the dirt and sediment in the brake fluid could seize up the piston inside of the caliper. Remove the brake line from the back of the caliper, typically it is held on by a banjo bolt. flush all of the old brake fluid through the detached line. Then reattach the brake line back to the caliper. Fill the system with new brake fluid, then bleed the system out through the calipers.

I've only screwed up for 48 years (about 10 yrs old is when 2 wheels became more important than everything else,)listening to or subscribing to the high priced factory sales men and women (bless those girls heart area, on the outside,) when I put my life on the line. And finally when this far, I've made it, one, (you) come out with what is above certified safety instructions and factory protocols, engineering developments. I came up with a bad ass way to do away with the need to ever have to bleed brakes again. I took the cable brakes from my old push bike and put them on my Fireblade. This did away with the need for disks, pistons and brake housings, brake pads and fluid etc. Unfortunately I did not get a chance to test them myself as my friend borrowed the bike and killed himself on it before I could. I don't honestly think he was ready for such a fast machine.

A mechanic noticed his co-worker drinking brake fluid at lunch.
"What are you doing, man? You can't drink that stuff!"
"Relax," replied his co-worker, "this stuff tastes pretty good, and I don't drink it all the time."
"Seriously," the mechanic exclaimed, "that brake fluid is poison!"
"Hey, man" yelled the co-worker, "back off! I can stop any time I want."
    Yep, that was lame.

I didn't have any syringes for the last part as I gave that up. So I just sucked on the end of the hose and found that worked well. The mild blindness cleared up quickly but the headache lasted for days. It did teach me that I'm going to have to space brake bleeds from now on.

A tip to you guys changing break/clutch fluid and dont want to bleed it.
If you get a bigger syringe (often found on farms due they use it to inject medicine on cows/horses) you can add the fluid in the syringe and open the bleed valve and press it from bottom to the reservoir. Then close it while pushing in fluid when you see it retching the reservoir. With this Technic you dont need to bleed it, Because the air is traveled up :)
I do like this on the clutch and brakes on my KTM and it works perfect every time :)

Thanks for the walkthough on the subject, I really appreciate you putting the video together. This cleared up a lot of what I was doing wrong while getting the oil pressure back to normal.
One thing I'd like to ask about is cleaning out the brake line. I noticed on my bike that fresh oil turns brown after a few pumps. I can clean out the cylinder and the callipers no problem. How would you suggest clearing out the brake lines in case there's some brown sludge in there? Use the special brake cleaner fluid you mentioned or just get enough fresh brake fluid through the line?

Is it true you shouldnt use old brake fluid? I saw somewhere 3 days after being opened you should throw out your left over fluid. And you should also try not to shake the bottle to avoid bubbles?

    • @Duggan506
      @Duggan506 Před 8 lety

You can still use it after 3 days but some people don't recommend it cause brake fluid absorbs water so you'll be reduced braking power i've never had a problem but yeah.
also no you probably don't want to shake the bottle because it will take longer to bleed all the air out once you fill the system.

    • @joshuanewby

You can use brake fluid thats been open for years if you pour it into a dry kettle and make a brew. Pour it over a tetleys t bag and all the water will be absorbed by the tea. This works as good as a regular cup of tea but you need an extra 2 spoons of sugar to take the twang out of it.....

A few comments on this video. First, if the fluid is that dirty, get a turkey baster or some type of vacuum bleeder and suck out the old fluid from the reservoir first. Don't push that dirty fluid through the system. Second, make sure to get a fresh bottle of DOT 4 brake fluid for your motorcycle. There is no such thing as "DOT 3.4". I have no idea what the presenter was thinking. Third, use the proper size closed-end wrench to loosen/tighten the bleeder valve. Do NOT use tweezers or pliers! Finally, flush enough brake fluid through the system so that it's completely clean. Do not skimp out on fluid. Then every two years thereafter, do this again for good brake maintenance.
