- Step back into 1883 and join me on a journey to the heart of the wild west. My chuck wagon and I are on a mission to homestead the Oklahoma frontier. With a good set of pioneer tools and a little bushcraft knowhow I'll struggle my way through this and hopefully survive my first year of off grid living in the old west.
In this episode I begin construction of the roof with cedar planks. During this time Oklahoma already had rail roads so getting wood planks from the east was doable. Those who couldn’t afford it would use bundled up grasses and then laid as much as 2 feet of sod overtop. From what I’ve read these roofs needed to be rebuilt every year because of leaks until they could afford to buy wood planks. My roof will eventually get a sod covering but I’ll build the walls first which will strengthen the roof before I lay the sod.
Thank you for watching and if you enjoy the video please remember to give it a thumbs up! I plan on making these videos for years to come.

What made pioneers so successful was adapt and overcome , you show that trait. Look forward to further instalments good luck .

Hi, Mr W Pioneer!
It is so peaceful, and I like the setting of your homestead on the site dug out. That must give you some feelings of security from harmful wild life. I don’t know about your climate there but am wondering if you need to do some upgrading to keep the space dry from torrential rain you might occasionally have. I’ll see what you would do about it. Is the reddish soil typical in your homesteading area ? I like the color, too.
Thanking you for your reply and I now knew lots of uninvited creatures around your property, however I hope they are clever enough to keep distance with you to live longer.
Thank you so much! Yes I really love this spot too and the reddish soil is very typical here in Oklahoma. We are entering in the rainy months right now so you're right about the rain being a problem. I'll need to address that soon, there is still a lot of work I need to do to the roof but I'm more worried about the rain water coming down the hill. My plan is to redirect the water into a cistern that I will dig to collect it for the summer dry months to come.
