7-Week Historical Sod-Home Build (No Talking, ASMR, DIY)
This hasn't been done in 140 years! My chuck wagon and I are on a mission to off grid homestead Oklahoma the way it was done in 1883. With a good set of pioneer tools and a little bushcraft knowhow I'll hopefully survive the coming winter.
In this episode I finally get to the step in the build process that I've been fantasizing about for years and that is putting the sod walls in. It was so much more challenging than I anticipated. Two things I didn't foresee involved the sod itself. The sod here isn't as high of quality as the sod the pioneers would have had because the top soil here is actually just dust from the 1930's dust bowl but it doesn't hold together for another reason. This land was over grazed by cattle in the 1950's and the cattle ate all the good native grasses which left only the weeds with poor root systems. Dust and short roots don't make for good sod bricks but it seems to have worked out.
Cutting the sod was another challenge. The first 3 sod cutters I made really didn't work out well and I would have to reset every 4 feet or so. Making the wood runners longer really helped as did adding more weight. In the end I was piling on almost 250 pounds. I also needed a lot thicker metal blade than I originally thought as the first one got really bent up when the soil hardened after it didn't rain for a few weeks.
I look forward to all your questions and comments.Thank you for watching and if you enjoy the video please remember to give it a thumbs up!
God bless,
Will

    What they call a Dugout or Dugout Soddy, but boy your sod is so dry, should be moist so it hangs together, not falling apart. Are you gonna plaster this inside? It will sure keep the dirt and dust down inside. EarthRam style is another good ole fashioned way to build.

      I did it this way because I believe that’s how most pioneers did it however you might be completely right. I’m planning on eventually making a second building and I’ll probably build that one a little differently than how I did this one.

    Just came across this. Interesting. When I first saw what came up, I thought this was being built out of sod. I'd like to see someone build a house out of sod, just like the pioneers would have in a treeless area. Folks lived in those buildings for years.... How did they do it?

  • @lawrencemoore7712

    Awesome work, I don't know if this was asked but with the claylike dirt and the wild grasses was Adobe brick not feasible for you. I live in Southern AZ so it's everywhere out her.

    • @WesternPioneer
      @WesternPioneer Před 2 dny

      Yes that would be doable here but from my research most people here in Oklahoma chose sod over adobe, although I honestly don’t know why.

      Thank you for watching. I don’t know yet. I’ve never read of the pioneers doing that but it makes sense too do it. The more grass that grows on the outside the better it will be to stop erosion (I think).

    In reality, people who lived in sod huts had short life expectancies. Nothing romantic about frontier life except among people who like mythology and Learn their history from low budget movies and TV. Why would a carpenter wear a side arm while building? “Stupid is as stupid does”!

    Round pack earth earth building etc I get but no way rather actually make brick rock and mortar and stone is more available but still built form use engineer stamped wood permits for bigger houses here can make pretty good sized buildings so just not worth it for bigger can always get one but I don’t want others to have to sacrifice or even consider my options rather they can experience it but choose to consider it as life style experience rather then not having options
