      I think it is a bundle of things. San Andreas runs on tons of things from consoles to Washing Machines. I never played it but from what I've heard, San Andreas to GTA V was a smoother transition than GTA4. It's kinda weird to have a spiritual successor to a game that skips a generation.

    It still blows my mind that Microsoft was able to buy Minecraft for only $2.5 billion. It seems like such a small number for what is essentially the most successful video game of all time. Here on Balkan , the most popular game from 2000s to 2014 was CS 1.6 (Legal and Cracked version) Almost every single person played that game: Gamers, Non Gamers, Kids, Grown ups even football hooligans. Almost every single PC had CS 1.6 installed. Even people without internet during 2000s, liked that game so much, they spend over 1000 hours playing with bots. The second most played game was GTA San Andreas (PC Version) that game was popular for a long time, also almost every single pc had installed that game. Both games were mostly cracked version. I remember those Gaming caffe's in 2000s were filled with kids, they payed 2 hours just to play CS 1.6 and GTA San Andreas. Gypsy's were the funniest, they were obsessed with CJ. I think WoW was third most popular, mostly cracked version. Others were Need for Speed titles (Underground,Underground 2 and Carbon), DOTA (Warcraft 3 mod). And most popular Singleplayer Campaigns were
    Return to Castle Wolfenstein (Almost every 5th balkan gamer , beat that games , it was popular in multiple generations), Call of Duty 1, Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4 (Later around 2009 people started playing mp) Medal of Honor Allied Assault. Im not sure but i think Quake 3 arena was popular for 10 years in some areas.
    RTS Scene was Stronghold, Civilization, Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2, Command and Conquer: Generals.

    FFXI in 2005 was huge for a while being an online game, but it was out at the same time WoW was (I remember having to make the decision which one to play) and I went with XI (which would also explain the burst, then decline, most people went warcraft).
    But daaaamn, Skyrim is one of those games you can keep playing over and over. 11 years later and I still go back and binge it for 300 hours.
    Also, Animal Crossing also came out at the same time (literally like 3 days after) people went on lockdown around the world. I knew so many people (female, male and others) that picked it up, even if they had no interest in it, because it gave people something to do on a daily basis and it's literally a game of doing a small amount of things every day that gives it some longevitiy.

    In all seriousness, some of the popularity shifts are about play style and tendencies on who gravitates toward various play styles. Anecdotal on my end, but I've found a lot of majority girl fandoms prefer stories that give some degree of creative control. Character customization, building aspects of the setting, narrative direction, etc. Less competition/collection/trivia focus compared to majority guy fandoms. A lot of of the times when games shot to the top or even rose dramatically in status they had some degree of that involved. Minecraft had it, Animal Crossing had it, Sims had it for the period that was big (note Sims 4 pissed players off a lot) etc. There are fewer games overall that use the customization approach, and the ones that do show... really varying quality. Ex. Vanilla Dragon Age: Inquisition has shitty hair options and literally won't allow any player characters to wear dresses. If you're going in wanting to do character design that's a big limitation.
    There are also splits in how majority guy vs majority girl fandoms interact with content that corresponds to priorities too. Both like analysis/lore, but majority guys tend to be more about observing what is/plot focus while majority girls tend to be more about what could be/character focus. Likewise, you get more fanart, fic, etc. in majority girl circles while guys share their competitive achievements or collections. Not a bad thing, just distinct cultures. Different majorities usually congregate on different parts of the internet and aren't always aware of each other at all.
    This is part of why I think FFXIV is doing well rn incidentally, chart aside. There's room in it for multiple game priorities, so you get more even mix in player composition.

      From my experience of playing FFXIV since ARR, I find many female friends that continue to play FFXIV because of not only the storyline but also because of the customization of character looks and house decorations. They always want to make their character look certain way to resemble their ideal look in their head. This could vary from what themselves would want to look like or a glamour that they would like to wear IRL because of cute dresses or whatever. Then for the housing aspect, it's the same as their character clothes/looks and they put whatever house decoration that resemble a lot of their ideal type of house they would like to have IRL too. It feels very aesthetic approach. After all, most people can agree that the end game is all glamour.

    • @firalia
      @firalia Před 2 lety +20

      Glamour and gposing truly is endgame in FFXIV for us ladies. Housing too, but housing is super expensive and requires a lot of commitment lmao.
      I am definitely more attached to FFXIV than other games, in large part due to the character customisation and the amount of fanart and fanfiction the fandom gets. 😂

    • @janedoe885
      @janedoe885 Před 2 lety +12

      @@duskshadow25 Absolutely true on this! That said, worth mentioning a chunk of majority female fandom isn't aspirational in nature either. Ex. I know I have a metric fuckton of alts purely because I'm fascinated by other people, personalities, tones, and what's possible to create in the game. There's always some element of "this is something I find beautiful/spooky/badass/cute/cool/sexy/elegant/etc." but what the appeal is can vary a lot character to character. Like... I got a male roegadyn alt that is specifically designed to like like a tiger. Not what I'm personally attracted to, but I feel sincerely hyped by how awesome he looks. Sometimes the customization is a way of exploring and connecting with another person/way of existing rather than what you wish you were personally.
      Also worth mentioning that I've found most people who hang in majority guy fandoms (including some women!) didn't really get this sort of thing, hence "why would you do multiple alts when you could just fantasia and level all your jobs on one character." If you want to create more than one character concept, weave it in with the lore and put so much work into crafting particular impressions through design, then giving that up whenever you want to try something new means losing something you put effort into. Plus if you feel attached to your creation, there's loss in switching.
      It's actually at a point where the idea of making a character who either represented me/what I personally would like for myself feels really weird and alien haha. I get other people doing it, the idea of doing it for myself is just super bizarre and not as satisfying for me personally. Got IRL to focus on making my own life!

      @normanmccollum6082 Před 2 lety +5

      I don't know about an 'even split,' but I agree with Asmon's mention of girls. There's not as many girl gamers as guy gamers, but for videogames that can appeal to both genders it's a big help. Fortnite may have had a LITTLE BIT of appeal to female gamers because of the cute skins you can get, but it's still a gun game. A shooting game. It's also highly competitive which is itself masculine. With Animal Crossing it's lighthearted, it's fun, it's downright adorable, you can meet neighbours and help people and do little things like go fishing and catching butterflies and helping a museum, you can also visit other people's worlds and enjoy the different fruit trees they might have, etc. I can see how that would be HIGHLY appealing to females, but also it's obviously a fun game in its own right. Being male has done nothing to me to dissuade me from playing it, beyond the aspect of perhaps fearing my father catching me playing a game that is so blatantly cutesy thus feeling massive disappointment and/or disgust emanate from him.
      It's a genuinely fun game, there's lots to do, you can customize/expand a home, and it appeals to both genders. Minecraft similarly has some appeal to female gamers but not as much as Animal Crossing.
      Very interesting stuff. I feel like playing Minecraft now. Animal Crossing? Yeah I might someday play it again, to try a version of Animal Crossing that was released after 2010. Oh wow actually I just checked... I think that ALL my memories playing Animal Crossing stems from the very first game which was released in 2001, 21 years ago. Wow... but yeah I do tend to play games that are more hardcore. World domination with Civ5, surviving The Zone in Call of Pripyat, suffering in WWII via Red Orchestra 2 or Rising Storm, or Rising Storm 2: Vietnam, etc.
      Minecraft was the dominant game for me for a long time, I expanded big-time into various biomes and did a lot of mining, made towers and castles and like statues or symbols or whatever so that at any one given time on the surface I could SEE something I have built even if it's off in the distance. I'd build a new structure, do a lot of mining, explore around the structure until it was JUST in sight in the distance, and then build yet another structure to continue. Even made an underground powered railroad that was over 1km long so that I can fairly easily and quickly traverse my little empire. I also made maps.
      Then one time, when I had reverted my game to an earlier version to try an online server which is not something I used to do often, I forgot to return the game to the current version. I entered my Minecraft world... and lost so much. Pretty sure entire buildings just disappeared, and it wouldn't come back. Maps, journals, lots of different things... broke my heart. I have scarcely touched Minecraft since that day, but I do imagine at some point I will get back into it and once more expand an empire. Make another 'Tower of Pimps' (Rooster Teeth reference), probably have a different world for when I'm sober than for when I'm drunk (because it's usually while drunk that I do stupid shit and die in lava or whatever), and I can experience how Minecraft has changed under Microsoft. See the different mobs, maybe experiment with the Nether which I didn't particularly bother with in the past, build with new materials, and so on. I had even dedicated some structures to people who had passed on, like a relative of mine and also for Lt. Gen. Mikhail Kalashnikov for whom I think I had constructed a bridge.
      Had a lot of good times, playing that game... and I imagine a lot of girls have had a lot of good times playing Minecraft too but likely more-so Animal Crossing I think. Higher percentage of females than with Minecraft. Oh yeah, and I never played in 'Creative Mode' before. Never, not once.

There were people in school who would bully you for liking video games back then and even those who did like it and weren't considered nerds wouldn't outwardly talk about it. So once games became commonly accepted for all people, not just nerdy dudes you see the total search counts skyrocket. Though I am saying that with the big hesitation that if they did reboot it the rebooted lore and characters could end up much worse. We should accept our differences and not be toxic to each other. In the past almost all gamers would most likely agree that The Sims is also the game more for a female audience and this wasn't taken as a bad thing. It's stereotyping people in a way, based on average demographic facts, there's always something true about the stereotypes, otherwise they would not exist for a long time. Kinda sad to see the amount of quality/original/great games that came out from 2004-2014 pipping each other for slots on the top 10, then we get to the last 5 years or so and its pretty much the same games being kept alive by lazy game development companies and a new generation of gamers that are happy the play the same shit for 10 years as long as it gets a little update here and there (Fortnite, PUBG etc) These days we rely on indie/small game development companies to keep the fresh ideas coming because the big boys can keep a cash cow going for 6 years and take no risk creating new IP's.

      @@jerubaal101 I think popular genres are fucked nowadays but niche genres are doing extremely well. 4X gamers or simulation gamers have the largest variety and quality games they've ever had for example. I do agree to a point though.

      I really like your comment I couldn't have said it better... that's how the whole art industry work theses days unfortunately... this ain't really different with movies and music... just the same lame bullshit being remade only to pump money out of costumers... definitely not out of passion. Creating for passion is old story... nowadays making money has become more important then actually ''creating''... And the whole industry of ''art'' is suffering because of greedy corporations, shareholders, and dumb people who support this dumb shit that doesn't mean anything... and it will just keep getting worse... and it's just fucking sad... because art is meant for expression and not for brainwashing & making money. The future of art lies behind indie & passionate artists who won't compromise their integrity for "money"...

    I think the Animal Crossing boom is more about timing. It just so happened to come out right around the time the whole world got shut in their homes. It's a super chill game, perfect to take our minds away from the chaos and fear of the world, and well, what were people supposed to spend their time on if not video games?

    Not sure why Runescape and Lineage 2 weren't featured. Those games owned the MMO market as much as WoW. Also I like how San Andreas was permanently in the tops and been dominating for such a long time.

      Nah, not really. RS came out in like 2001 and sure it was popular, but it did not hit those numbers as far as I recall. Lineage 2 was solid, but gated by an endgame grind that had lost a lot of it's playerbase within a year of release, and it came out in 2003 or so. It also had some pretty terrible marketing, so while it was popular sure, it failed to even be on the radar of a lot of players at the time. So by the time this list came out it was far smaller.

      @@tegaautomata2094 I think it also depends on what country you are living in. So far I live in 3, in my country the most famous MMO was MU Online, then when I moved to another country, they had Lineage 2 and then the other one - Runescape. Even when WOW came out, nobody here was playing it, everyone was all about RS.

    It's interesting to notice that not only did WOW trail off, but there isn't a single game from the "Massively Multiplayer Online" Genre that keeps their player base above other non-massive, non-multiplayer, and non-online games.
