  • Float fishing with bait is the most basic technique used to catch rainbow trout. In this video feature, we venture to Weaver Lake near Harrison Mills in British Columbia, catching rainbow trout by fishing with Pautzke Bait Balls O' Fire single eggs under a float.

    My Dad and I used too fish weaver lake, I was maybe 6-8 years of age! We used to walk down the creek and fish at the mouth in the fall when the sockeye were running! There was a guy there fishing He had only one arm! And was using worms and catching jacks,we would use single eggs and cast into the mouth of the creek and let it drift into the lake, so much fun! Only the cutthroat trout were average 2-5 lbs! Earlier in the year we would fish the Harrison river up from the bridge at all the gravel points with a muddler fly and catch the same fish feeding on stickle back fry! These fish then would all come up from the ocean every summer after Freshet!

    Great to hear! That's the whole point of these videos, so others can go out and enjoy the same fisheries too. If you are still in Vancouver, you might want to go take a look at the Capilano River mouth where they often fish for coho salmon that are staging, early morning is best. The other option is to go check out Chilliwack River where both chinook salmon and sockeye salmon are returning to it right now. Good luck!

    That's a pretty awesome reel for trout fishing too, smaller than the one we used in this video. Just make sure you spool it with the appropriate line recommended by the reel, I would go with either 2 or 4lb test.

    Yes. In British Columbia, barbless hooks are required in all rivers and some lakes. We usually just pinch the barb for all the hooks prior to our trip to whichever lakes or rivers, not just to follow the regulations, but to release fish more easily and avoid hooking ourselves with barbed hooks.

    @FishingwithRod  Před 12 lety

    Yep, that's actually what we've started considering. Circle hooks are used pretty common in a lot of saltwater fisheries that I experienced in the past, but have never tried it for trout. I'm sure we'll have a video done on that eventually. Thanks.

  • @FishingwithRod
    @FishingwithRod  Před 12 lety

    Yes we were. Most freshwater fisheries in British Columbia require anglers to only use a single barbless hook. Barbed single or treble hooks can be used at some lakes. We pretty much only use single barbless hooks all the time to avoid the hassle of possibly breaking the rules or mishandling the fish.

    My anchors are actually just cannon balls used for trolling on the downrigger. Whatever anchors you choose, just make sure they're heavy enough to hold and have two for the boat, one at the front and the other at the back so the boat does not spin in the wind.

    I used that technique with minnows in tawas Michigan for Atlantic salmon, rainbow, lake trout in the spring. Work's well. O on a slip bobber for depth adjustment.

  • @FishingwithRod
    @FishingwithRod  Před 12 lety

    If you wish to fish in 15-20 feet deep, then a sliding float with stoppers tie onto the line is best so you can adjust the float depth to as much as you want. With that being said, I personally prefer to just switch to a bottom/sinker rig when fishing in water that deep. Float fishing seems to be better suited for waters less than 10 feet deep. I hope that helps. Good luck!

    Trout in this lake average between 12 and 14 inches long. The odd ones might reach 16 inches but no bigger than that. The reason being that the TDS (total dissolved solid) is low at these lakes near Vancouver so productivity is low. Fish simply do not have enough to eat to reach bigger size even if they are released. We kept a few larger fish that we caught for dinner and they tasted great. :)

    Chilliwack River is currently only open for fly fishing downstream from the Vedder Cross (upstream from it is closed to fishing). The river is quite high but clarity is good so if you are fly fishing, you can certainly find some trout throughout the opened section. There are also juvenile steelhead present right now and they have to be released. A good lake to try nearby is Cultus Lake, where you might be able to find some cutthroat trout from shore. Good luck! :)

    Your channel is really awesome. It can soothe the craving of fishing. I've watched many of your videos. You are such an expert fisherman. I used to fish salmon and trout a lot in Puget Sound, Seattle area. But I never gone for fishing since I moved to SoCal 10 years ago. Your videos also reignite my passion in fishing. There is a Canadian guy 'Fishing doctor's adventure' on this site. He was in SoCal and moved back to BC, Canada. Maybe you guys can collaborate a video, that should be cool. If you like to try to drive down further to central Washington, there is a lake called Sun Lakes, about 3 and a half hours driving from Seattle metro. It is my favorite trout fishing lake. You can easily catch a double size of the ones you caught in the video. Well, only if you like to try to fish in your south neighbor. I always use power bait. I never used float, will maybe try to use float with worm or salmon egg in future weekends. Can't wait to try first time fishing in 10 years. Have you ever used night crawler + marshmallow? I heard it works to surprise you. If you can make a video, that will be really nice. I guess we probably have the same last name in Taiwanese and Chinese culture, but I am Taiwanese, so I spell it differently. Keep up the great work.

    The eggs do pop at times, but most of them do not. These Pautzke single eggs have been treated so that they don't pop so easily. I find that if you are float fishing, they stay on pretty well. If you are casting out with a heavy weight, then a more durable bait like shrimp or krill is preferred.

    The rod is just a standard ultralight spinning rod, which should be available at any tackle store. Shimano is a good brand to go with. Look up Shimano Clarus or Convergence 2-6lb spinning rods.

  • @FishingwithRod
    @FishingwithRod  Před 11 lety

    The short answer is it depends on where you want your bait to be. You want to use enough weight to balance your float properly, or use just enough weight to get your bait down to the bottom when fishing with a bottom rig. You should never use weights heavier than what is recommended on the fishing rod. Generally 1oz or less is sufficient enough for trout fishing.

    In British Columbia, there is a minimum length for trout in rivers, not lakes. There is always a daily quota for trout and in lakes you are only allowed to keep certain number of trout that are over 50cm long. It is best for you to check the BC freshwater fishing regulations (link available on our website) carefully before heading out.

    Thanks. If you are targeting trout, small spinners almost never fail. I'd look for a spinner that's 1/8oz or 1/16oz. Rooster Tails made in the US are pretty good. Small spoons in that size range should also work well.

    Salmon and trout fishing opportunities are widely available just outside of Vancouver. Fishing depends on the time of the year when you are here. If you go to our website, click on fishing locations, go to region two, you will find a list of lakes and rivers where you can fish for trout and salmon near Vancouver. Each page tells you when it is good at a particular fishery and what you can expect to target.

    This lake drains into a stream that has anadromous salmon populations, but they do not travel into the lake due to the geographical barrier (steep falls). The lake has both rainbow trout and cutthroat trout. They eat eggs because they're just being trout, which are not too picky when it comes to natural bait.

    I'm not sure what size the spit shots are because I don't keep track the numbers. There are pretty much only two sizes I carry, small ones and tiny ones. The amount I add on depends on the size of the float. Usually just a couple of small ones or several tiny ones. I have them around 12 to 16 inches above the hook.
