  • I was feeling cheated when I thought we were missing Michelozzo's March Stakes at Goodwood and possibly Geoff Baxter's last winner in the Seller at Windsor and so it was great to see they were included at the end. Lovely to hear John Penney and Bruce Frend James at Nrewmarket and Rawls at Newcastle crediting every winning jockey including Steve Perks doubling up and finally a very young almost embryonic Simon Holt at Windsor all on a rather damp drizzly and foggy August Saturday afternoon. Other jckeys long gone from the arena with wins here include John Matthias, Allen Mackay, Mark Birch and now trainer Michael Wigham. The results can be found here:

Have you ever come across the Aintree Foxhunters from 1980 or 1981? Whenever I heard the tones of John Hamner, I'm transported to spring. It will always be like that.

I knew all of them as a kid, going to tracks as a teenager, practicing my commentaries. Both Raleigh, John and Simon gave me so much advice and encouragement and listened to my commentary tapes. I use the skills they taught me every day

@@BritishRaceCaller Yes I have heard of you Craig, you cover racing in the US?. Out of them I only ever met Raleigh on a few occasions at the Northern tracks with my dad. I was only about 10 at the time but by eck I remember he used to go through cigarettes like nobodys business. John McCririck was another never seen without a King Edward cigar in hand

@@tullymurrytoff1497 yes Raleigh could certainly smoke! Lots of memories of driving back to London in his red sports car as we listened to a tape of my calls. Sometimes staying overnight in his rooms in Hammersmith. Long (in a good way) afternoons at Newmarket with John Penney and Robin Gray, watching them work and they would critique a a race for me and had so much good advice. JA McGrath was very supportive as well. But there isn't a day of commentary and I call 180 days per year, I do not think of Raleigh and John Penney. They made very positive impressions on me at a young age. Yes, I am based in the US am the commentator at Turf Paradise that is running right now and is on Sky Sports Racing. I am also the commentator at Pleasanton, Fresno, Sacramento and Ferndale in California in the summer time. As well as for 6 of the biggest steeplechase meetings along the east coast, including the historic Virginia Gold Cup! If you ever gear any of my calls and would like to critique them I am always looking to improve: britishracecaller@gmail.com is the email. Many thanks.

@@BritishRaceCaller Never in a month of Sundays would I be critical of anyone doing that job. In the UK as you know, we have an excellent bunch. Im not sure we need the extra 2 they have added recently, who I imagine are still on probation. Keep up the good work, 180 days is a lot of calling!
