People don't understand that they are there for emergencies. Calling the local police for everyday crimes is a thing, but most of the time it's an emergency (life or death, grand theft, etc.).

Out where I live, response time is 30 minutes, if you’re lucky. The cops are just here to check the scene and dispose of the formerly alive home intruder. Of course, they’re also deputies, so that’s a little different. They know the drill, they live out here too.
15 minutes is fast, I heard a woman getting beaten and our police department in the UK is 10 mins away, it took them half an hour to get here and she was hiding in the woods but he came back and got her, he was throwing her on the car and beating her. I went to help and he almost hit me. These kids - they have no idea.
Cops aren't there to protect you anyway. It really is kinda irrelevant (in most cases) whether the police come 5 minutes after or an hour. You need to protect yourself, whether that is with weapons or self defense skills (preferably both). You can't run from a rapist or murderer while calling the police and expect them to be there on time to get him off you or something, they really have not thought it through
In my city they have gutted the police department to the extent that the state police help patrol. And YES I live in a Democratic city in a Democratic state.

In my country there is a ministry called ministry of religion which manages religious activity, events, etc, and this ministry is given the biggest amount of funding from the gov, and yes, above security, research, even education. My first argument is that if you want police to work properly, you probably need more funding for a better training, more incentive for good people, more control over the officers, more officers for controlling the situation, so that one officer shouldn't have to use a lot of force, instead multiple officers control the situation which also leads to less personal racist acts and more surveillance so that racist cops can be identified and fired.
The situation in your country have nothing to do with this.
preen that’s the thing, they shouldn’t be working in ALL ASPECTS of our lives. Suicidal? Call the police. Injured? Call the police. Domestic abuse? Call the police. There should be other branches that handle these types of things with specialists in these branches who can handle the situations better than cops would. You would still have police to go after bank robbers, violent people etc. but they just wouldn’t be answering calls about things other than those listed previously.

I preface this by saying that I am a "democrat" (left on some issues, right on other issues) and I like listening to people on both sides such as Ben Shapiro and Trevor Noah. With that said, My dad was a cop and when I was growing up the most important thing was that he was coming home safely. I think people think of defunding as dismantling. Dismantling the police is wrong and will lead to more problems. I believe portions of funding should be reallocated to other areas in the community and more of the money that they have should go towards training. A problem that I see is people feel like you have to be all left or all right on subjects that aren't necessarily black and white. To sum it up, reallocate. Don't dismantle.

Neither do I. The idea of the police is more effective than itself. People know of the police so they think twice before committing a crime. If there isn’t an idea of a police then everything would be much worse. Especially them in Florida you would expect them to think of how much worse it would be when armed citizens exercise their second amendment rights.

if we stop paying taxes, theres no money. so when your streetlight gets knocked down by some street racers, and the city or sate has no money to send a team to go fix it.

if we stop giving funds to police theres no money. so when you call the police to set up a rape kit or a rape report, or settle a small dispute, they don't have enough money for a unit to be dedicated to rape kits, they don't have enough money to pay the salaries for the man power to go to that dispute, they have to reform their money to make sure they can still train, have equipment, pay their officers.
For instance in LAPD, they had to get rid of a sexual assault unit, the same unit that investigated Harvey Weinstein.
Can you imagen what it would be like to like employ one of these children.

What about not defunding the police, but intervening and force these departments to do a better job at background checking the police officers they hire. These bad apples who are wrongfully hurting civilians need to be removed and should get consequences for their actions. It’s not right to wrongfully hurt anybody of any race. This current racist justice system is giving racist folks the chance to terrorize innocent black folks just by the basis of their skin. They should forcefully restrain people who are a threat, not just bc they are black. I respect the police, I want them to protect my black friends and family not shoot them down bc they have more melanin in their skin. They need to pull their socks up.(I’m a republican btw)

That is what 99% of "police brutality" is, criminals fighting back against the police until they are subdued sometimes obviously by lethal force....the amount of unarmed or unprovoked instances of people having violent altercations with police is almost non existent.
