Do College Students Hate Free Speech? Let's Ask Them.

  • The faculty council at Occidental College is considering instituting a system for students to report microaggressions perpetrated against them by faculty members or other students.
Reason TV visited Occidental's campus to find out what exactly constitutes a microaggression. One Columbia psychology professor defined the term this way:
Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.
After exploring the limitations of a microaggression reporting system, we discussed broader free speech issues with the students in the wake of a month of campus protests that resulted in the resignations of several faculty members and a university president.
Most of the students defended free speech in principle, if not always in practice. This is consistent with a recent Pew Research Center survey, which found that although 95 percent of Americans agree that people should be allowed to publicly criticize government policies, support erodes when the question turns to offensive speech. While a majority of millennials still believe that the government should protect speech offensive to minorities, a whopping 40 percent believe the government should restric such speech.
"If you say 'You're less of a person because you're Muslim/Jewish/Christian/Catholic... that's not okay. That's a hate crime," one student told us.
Another student argued that the government should curtail the speech of Donald Trump, while a protest organizer told us that free speech is a rhetorical device used by the priveleged against the oppressed.

I bring this up because my twin also suffers from gender dysphoria, also since gaining “consciousness” around 3. But my twin never forces people to use “he/him” pronouns, never claims PSTD from being misgenders and gets uncomfortable when people trip over themselves and flog themselves for automatically seeing my twin as female. (My twin is very…curvaceous, which doesn’t help the dysphoria.)

I ask because I had somewhat negative experiences from “both sides” during my time at school (not middle-aged yet). Not anything worth reporting, just annoying close to how, we’ll say Fox News or MSNBC would describe people they don’t like.

@Tony Duncan I hope that's true. It does seem like a lot of moderate democrats are able to rationalize the obscenities in the media, the unconstitutional policies the left promote, and will do enough research to learn Trump has been far better for Americans than any democrat president. But there are people out there who differ in opinion whom concern me, for example here's an anecdotal example:
I'm 25 and have a close friend who's in his 50's, he's a nice, intelligent and a generous guy but the word "republican" or "Trump" will literally drive him crazy. He lives in a small right leaning town and has recently been cursing people out in the street, at the grocery store etc. Because he sincerely believes republicans deny the existence of the corona virus since "Trump indoctrinated everyone to think it was a hoax". He only watches MSM and refuses to read any other source or research study I share with him. Don't even get him started on corporations or Wall Street.
Ironically he's a successful small business man who recently retired from the trades working as a mason. But he literally can't wrap his mind around the fact that his taxes were cut, his stocks are doing much better and the overall benefits Trump has brought to the average worker are far more than any recent president. He thinks any positive outcome came as a belated gift from Obama. He considers me as his son but even if I respectfully google and debate his claims he'll become violent.
To me, It's a sincere and even a visceral example of how progressive left ideology can turn a successful kind person into an uneducated, hate-filled, violent man. It's sad to say the least.

I think that when they say Asian-American they are referring to the ethnicity. But again this is America and this is how the system is. whenever you are filling up an application or anything for that matter, you are asked to identify your ethnicity. I mean I’m sure you know this

@John Taylor - I'm not sure I agree with the "one language" part, but I do agree with the rest.
I always thought it was weird that people say "African American" to anyone born after the 1910s.
Like... you're not from Africa. I don't go around calling myself a Puerto-Rican/Italian American, because I'm not from Puerto Rico or Italy.
I'm from America and I happen to be half Puerto Rican and half Italian.
But the "one language" is kind of a silly thing to say. I'm allowed to speak Spanish and Italian and English.
But I will say that if you come to this country, you SHOULD learn English. It's up to you to learn the language of the country you're living in.
That goes for every Country in the worl.d

      Hence my response .

+Dan Fortune Let's see ... we could try "Saul Alinsky bless you" -- except that Saul Hate-Speech-Incarnate Alinsky, the "God" of modern campus radicalism and general all-around nasty cuss, wouldn't bless anybody. And if we say "Saul Alinsky *curse* you", that pretty much goes without saying, because his leftist-totalitarian handiwork has thoroughly cursed today's youth by depriving them of the ability and the desire to understand that "freedom" is supposed to apply to EVERYBODY,. not just the indoctrinated. So, if a microaggression-sensitive, perpetually immature fragile flower of a university student sneezes, I propose we just say: "Cover your mouth. And keep it covered so no more STUPID comes out of it."

+05r13539 Logically, who other than a deity can actually BLESS you? Does not wishing a blessing infer the presence of a deity? Or has the New World Human acquired the power to bless now, by merely redefining the word? The way I see it, the most we mere mortals have the power to do is wish the sneezer good or improved health, so better stick with "Salud" or "Gesundheit" or the like, if you do not wish to inadvertently microagress on the religious front. Unfortunately, if you choose a foreign language option, you may run the risk of microagressing somebody who objects to your "cultural appropriation".
