- The vast majority of people, including health care professionals, are unaware of the negative impact of mouth breathing, on normal facial growth and general health of kids and adults.
Generally, nose breathing is normal and physiological. nose filters out particles that enter the body, humidifies the air we breathe, and warms it to body temperature.
In contrast, however mouth breathing "pulls all pollution and germs directly into the lungs; dry cold air in the lungs makes the secretions thick, slows the cleaning cilia, and slows down the passage of oxygen into the bloodstream."
Mouth breathers have following signs and symptoms:
Dry mouth, Snoring, Bad breath, Hoarseness, Brain fog, Feeling tired and irritable when you wake up.
Visually, especially in kids, a long face, an open bite, a high narrow palate, or gingivitis (inflammation of the gum).
narrow faces, narrow mouths, high palatal vaults, dental malocclusion, gummy smiles, and many other unattractive facial features, such as skeletal Class II or Class III facial profiles. Many mouth breather children exhibit, a significant increase in lower incisor proclination, lip incompetency and convex facial profile.
And mouth breathing is more prominent at night, during sleeping.
Many of this kids can not sleep well at night due to mouth breathing and obstructed airways.
Lack of sleep has direct adverse effects on growth, academic performance, and sometimes it can be misdiagnosed as attention deficit disorder and hyperactivity.
The Most common cause of mouth breathing is nasal congestion and Enlarged adenoids.
Other causes include:
Nasal allergies, More rare causes include, Nasal polyps, which are growths of tissue in the lining of your nose. Genetical diseases.
We can avoid such negative effect on facial and dental development, if mouth breathing will be treated early in kids.
Treatment is treatment of underlying conditions,
For example, if mouth breathing is caused by nasal congestion, because of allergy, then allergy medication.
If it caused by sleep apnea, in many cases weight loss and exercise is the treatment.
Practice breathing in and out through your nose.
If adenoid hypertrophy is presented, then adenoidectomy is the treatment.

I just learned this just now and I'm 30 years old....just got to practice to breath through the nose...
I think the only time you can mouth breathe is when you are out in loud party environments. Because breathing through your nose can sometimes restrict and block the flow of oxygen into your brain in those types of situations.
@@michaelsolano5311 now I have like learned and get used breathing through the nose and I have notice that there are times when it feels insufficient to breath through the nose, those times are not only at party environments but all those times when I feel a bit out of breath. Like during any effort, and all people seem to naturally do it then. So I think I overdid the breathing though the nose from the start and now when I'm used to it I'm trying to listen to what my body wants and just breaths how comes naturally.

I feel like such a bad mom. My daughter has been a mouth breather she’s now 15 and it’s struggling with her breathing she feels like she doesn’t get oxygen and has a the facial features of a mouth breather also the posture I feel so bad what can I do now I didn’t know she needed help
Hey its not too late. Please read carefully
1-Try getting her a band that doesn't allow the jaw to open while sleeping
2-Try teaching her about proper mouth posture (Mewing: tongue resting on top of the mouth
3-Make sure she uses salt water nasal sprays and constantly cleans her nose
4-If her nose still doesn't open up get her medical nasal sprays (Otrivine) and do it with supervision. Otrivine can be used twice a day for 5 days in a row. Then a month or two should pass before starting it again
5-Take her to a orthodontist, they can help her with her tongue posture and mouth breathing
6-Have her use one of those gadgets that opens up the nostrils while sleeping
7-Have her sleeping with her back against the wall on her side
This problem can always be fixed but if you do it before her teenage years are over it will be even more lasting. If she has any serious weight problems those can cause the face and nose to feel stuffy as well. Please apply the things I listed and constantly remind her. This is like having your child keep straight posture so that they stand taller and don't develop back problems.

This is true. When I was 15 years old, my mother told that I used to breath through my mouth and always kept mouth open during sleep . I had developed open bite and over bite. My friends told me that my face was asymmetric. But, when I look at mirror, I'm kind of symmetric face. I didn't know I had developed it until I went to an orthodontist and he told me that it can be treated by traditional braces. I have some kind of allergies, so I start to take medicines for allergies and now I'm able to breathe through nose and there is no more runny nose. Braces for one and a half year and now I am wearing retainer. Now everyone out there tell me that I'm beautiful.

I'm sure that I've seen a very similar picture to the one that appears at 0:51. I think it was related to the untreatment of severe tongue-tie in babies who then are likely to go on to develop these facial features. I also remember reading that children with tongue-tie often contend with open-mouth breathing. It's worth reading more about.
That’s true, I developed this profile because of tong tie, never had issues with mouth breathing. The treatment suggested to me by several dentists is double jaw surgery, very expensive and invasive surgery. It would’ve been much easier to remove the tong tie in childhood, now I’m stuck with misaligned jaws forever.
i had protruded teeth and couldn't close my mouth at night properly so i was a mouth breather till i got braces after hraces my teeth got better but i have no jaw and have a small chin 😢

I remember early on (at 6 or 7) my mother used to shout at me when she would catch me breathing with my mouth open. She would get really mad. So having my mouth shut and tongue against the roof of my mouth became 2nd nature. I wonder if she knew about this.

Nose breathe and mew
just a question when you breathe with your mouth and your face starts to look unattractive and deform, when you start breathing with your nose does the damage reverse or is it only possible by surgery?
When you're young keeping your mouth open will cause your face not to grow properly, if you're an adult and you have been nose breathing and start mouth breathing nothing will happen
I was and still a nose breather but after knowing about mouthbreathing effects now i cant even inhale through my mouth during high intense workout or when talking😢
Me either I can’t really take a deep breath with my mouth 😀
Should you tape your mouth when your sleep?
Seems like a bad idea... worsening the oxygen deficit would increase the neural damage.

Interesting, I was diagnosed with some chronic immune system dysfunction that causes my body to overreact to having a cold. This basically translates into having cold symptoms for longer than normal. Now that i am older it extents having a cold form a few days / one week to more like one month if I am lucky. However, as a child I was always walking around with a blocked nose and remember that breathing was only ever possible using my mouth (age 3 to 16). So yea, born mouth breather I guess.
Now for the interesting part, even tho I was a dedicated mouth breather, my jaw line is pronounced and my face does not have any of the above mentioned undesirable features. Instead, I look almost identical to my dad when he was my age, who is not a mouth breather btw.
So I am wondering, did I dodge the bullet here or is this theory just simply internet make believe? I think the latter.
You dodged a bullet. I have this face at 47, but did not at 16. I started mouth breathing in my late teens because of some relaxation tapes I listened to. I am now breathing through the nose for about two weeks and doing exercise to strengthen this and people have told me at least four times that I look so good.
You're just the lucky exception. Like the guy who smokes a pack a day and lives to be 100. May be genetics. It's not make-believe. I can look at the people that I know personally and see the correlation between mouth breathing and weak chin, narrow face and kyphotic posture. Look around and observe people you know and you'll see it.
Hi, I am a 19 year old from Singapore. I have been mouth breathing from when u was 9 all the way until I was 15. When I realized that what I was doing was wrong, it was already too late. I had spent so many years feeling lethargic with my sleep and recovery compromised. However, I later I found out I had this condition called Allergic Rhinitis. As a result, even though I am trying to breath through my nose now, it is very difficult. My nostrils are often 70% blocked on either side and when I try breathing through my nose it creates so much noise and irritates the people around me. I have a fitness test coming around in April and this condition does not seem to be getting better anytime soon. I am afraid that this compromised breathing may hinder my performance

I see so many people here in Washington state with their mouths slightly open. All the time
Wow, so a whole state is affected by that bad habit. Likely the result of cultural, family conditioning and inheritance of habits and physical genes.
That's funny. Three mother of my child is a major breather, and she actually has all of these issues for developed. Idk if it's true, but it seems to affect their intelligence level as well. I notice that the ones that mouth breathe, are not the brightest, even regards to common sense.
@@SANTANA1deep I noticed this too with people I went to school and grown up with. I believe I read somewhere that mouth breathing and lower intelligence definitely go hand in hand. However, not sure if one causes the other, or which one. I think some believe it is low intelligence can lead to mouth breathing, due to lack of self awareness. While others believe that it is mouth breathing that can cause lower intelligence due to lack of proper oxygen intake, and poor sleep. It has been a while since I've read anything about this topic, so I'm not sure if I am remembering what was said correctly. From my own experience, my husband and his siblings were all mouth breathers, with my husband less so, which he ended up correcting at the age of 13 and he is quite intelligent, and his face shape changed significantly since. His siblings on the other hand, were heavy mouth breathers. So much so, they would be scolded for the noise by some adults, telling them to close their mouths. They never corrected the issue, and as much as I hate to say this, they are not the smartest people I know. I feel terrible saying this, especially when i know i am no where near being a smart intellectual, but it's true. Another important factor to point out, is that with the younger siblings, the mother became an alcoholic and did drink while pregnant with them. Still unsure if she was drinking when pregnant with my husband, but there really is a considerable difference between their appearance and intelligence. Even with having the same parents. They all have the same features, looking nearly identical if it wasn't for the difference in facial structure. Anyway, I am rambling now, so I'll end with that. Such an interesting topic. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience.

@@WilliamAfton984How?
@@WilliamAfton984 As I understand it (and since it heavily pertains to me), proper tongue posture is supposed to support the maxilla bone and allow it to grow forward however when the tongue is dropped, this support is no longer there thus allowing the maxilla to drop under the pressure of breathing in air through the mouth and gravity in general. When the maxilla drops and consequently recedes, it takes the bones of the nose with it, causing the droop. I can confirm this because my nose is similar to that depicted in the mouth breather illustration in the video whereas my parents do not have noses like mine as they were not mouth breathers in their youth.
