We have a gateway set up, this was helpful for me to better understand its purpose. One thing I noticed in your video is how much faster the Gateway connection information loads for you when you're looking at the dataset details. For us, it sometimes takes *minutes* (gasp!). Hey Adam. I'm a little unsure what the reason behind the e-mail adres you entered is. Is it only there to identify the Tenant? Or does it mean that you are the Gateway administrator?
What if your e-mail adres is entered there, but you are no longer at the company after a while? Would a replacement admin have to use the recovery key to take over the Gateway?

Yo Adam, thanks for the update we've just installed a Gateway and its working fine.
It would be really useful if you could go over Gateway security in terms of connecting via the Gateway to an on prem SQL database and an SSAS Tabular model.
    When sharing a PBI report:
SSAS Tabular - If a PBI report consumer is NOT a member or a read role on the Tabular model they cannot see PBI report content. When the user is added to a role that has read permissions, report content is visible - which is fine!
SQL databases - This doesn’t seem to be the same when connecting to a SQL databases, users who are NOT a member of a read role can see PBI report content - is this as expects, have I set -up something incorrectly?
When connecting directly to a SQL database are the permissions of the person sharing the report taken on by the report consumer? The only way to limit report content is with RLS? We’re on SQL Server 2014.

I am watching yours and Patrick's video since a year. They are awesome! Your tips and tricks add more value to my visuals. I read all comments and I have a quick question. You said when we publish the report on the Power BI service (using Import mode), the dataset resides on the Microsoft Cloud. Would like to comment anything on security? That will be a great help. I know the alternate option is to have a Power BI Report Server or have a Premium license. But I don't want to go for those alternatives.

This video was using the live streaming setup, so the desktop capture was way fancier than what you need. For regular videos, I just grab the desktop capture using Camtasia. But, i do all editing in Adobe Premiere. I wanted to try something different in this video to see if it made editing faster. Which it did. I'll still go back and forth.
For the on screen zoom, i used ZoomIt from sysinternals.com. If you caught the cursor spotlight and the zoomed box, that was from a paid tool called SwordSoft MouseTrack.

One question though: what if I have to connect to a remote on-premise SQL Server (say, in my organization) from Power BI desktop on my laptop in order to develop a new Dataset? Is it a situation where a Gateway might give me a way to connect? Or should I simply use a VPN to get to the DB Server? Or maybe ask for the installation of Power BI Desktop onto the DB Server and connect via RDP? Hi. Still somewhat confused what is the real purpose of the Gateway. When you refresh and publish your report from PBI Desktop, you actually send all your data to Microsoft cloud. When you set up a Gateway on your local machine, I understand you don't need to publish your report every now and then but rather you can set up automatic refresh on Power BI Service. But your data is still going to Microsoft cloud during the refresh, isn't it?

Great question. Yes the dataset resides in the Microsoft Cloud. When you go to refresh that dataset from Power BI, if you have an on-premises data source, Power BI doesn't know how to get to it to perform the refresh. That's where the gateway comes into the picture to server as that link.

@@GuyInACube OK, but then does it make any difference where your Gateway resides given that in most cases you schedule your refreshes during the off the office hours?
