- Power BI is a data analysis tool that connects to many data sources. Suppose the data source for Power BI is located in an on-premises location. In that case, the connection from the cloud-based Power BI Service to the on-premises located data source should be created with an application called Gateway. In this post, you will learn what the Gateway is, the types of the gateway, their differences, installing the gateway, and scheduling a data set with that gateway.

Nicely explained, thanks
Thanks for the comprehensive Explanation. Do we need Power BI gateway for Oracle Fusion DB Connection?
Very well explained. Thank you !!
Glad you liked it
excellent video thanks.
wonderful, Thanks
Thanks for the video? If we need the gateway only for the on-premises database then how security is taken care when we connect to the database which is in cloud? Please explain
Well Done.👍
Thanks!
Clearly explained..... thanks!
You're welcome!
Thank you, great video, lots of detail
Very welcome
thanks
This helped a lot, thanks
Glad to hear!
Thank you, this is very useful!
Glad to hear that!
What about if I have two clusters and my Power BI report use one source from first cluster and another source from the second cluster?
I tried but the report wouldn't refresh - is this limitation? Reports could use only
one cluster?
Thank u so much
Can the on-prem gateway be installed on AWS or GCP?
Excellent !
Thank you! Cheers!
Hello Sir,
We need clarity about the gateway, In our organization we use VPN for DB, So If the admin can create a report in powerBI means they are using VPN at that time. At that time only the remaining can see the report otherwise its showing error in the report.
The credentials are validated and able to fetch data on Power BI desktop, but the credentials are not validated on service side and thus not able to refresh the data when I type me windows user name and password how can I fix that???😊
Hi, We are using on-premise PBI data gateway. The gateway is keep stopping automatically after every 2-3 days. How to find the root cause of this issue.
Great video indeed.
I have setup the gateway on my laptop connecting to the on prem sql database.
The gateway is running properly.
However, I am getting an error "On-premise data gateway failed to impersonate the user" while doing power bi dataset refresh.
Struggling to understand where I am going wrong.
I want to connect gateway installed (on my laptop) to file system of on-prem Linux server , could you please help me with that, Thank you.
do we need gateway for direct query SQL ?as its kind of live connection
I watched the whole video a couple of times. but I could not find my answer.
I have a problem now with my gateways. We have different customers with their workings spaces on Power BI that we want to connect their datasets on Power BI to their databases to Exact Online. The datasets are available through an On-premises gateway.
But when they are scheduled to be refreshed, the one that the credentials are applied works but if it happens at the same time with another dataset through the gateway it does not work and one of the datasets does not ger refereshed. My question is, do I have to create different gateways for every customer and working space or I can have one gateway for all of working spaces?
I have my SQL database in AWS RDS.
Is there some way to avoid using the gateway altogether, apart from hosting the database in Azure or using OneDrive/Sharepoint?
I have a dataset stored in a PostgreSQL database and have successfully created a Power BI dashboard. However, I am encountering challenges while setting up the gateway in the Power BI service. The issue arises due to an additional layer of security in the form of a VPN that we use to access the database. How can I establish a connection between Power BI service and the PostgreSQL database considering the presence of VPN security?
watched your Gateway videos... but still can't get the connection to mySQL working :(
Do u have any idea what is going here (i am going crazy):
Gateway set on account #1. I use its connection for MySql query and Sharepoint on my dev account. Both connections are organizational. I made a dataflow in a Pro workspace with above mentioned connections. It can’t be refreshed due to the fact that these sources cannot be used in single query. It is ridiculous. It works in regular power query. Morover same dataflow works and can be refreshed in premium workspace. No logic behind the error. Any ideas?
Nice exaplanation. 👍👍👍👍
Do I need a gateway to connect AWS RDS AWS RDS to Power BI service?
Also can you please do a video about how to connect AWS RDS to Power BI service?
I have the same issue. Did you find any solution to connect Power BI Service to AWS RDS PostgreSQL?

What if i already have an API Gateway (Tyk or Kong gateway) in my infrastructure. What are the considerations / added values to add the Power BI Gateway in my infrastructure?
Not sure what do you mean by API gateway. If this is a gateway to work with a specific API, then it won't work with the Power BI connection. Power BI connection to your on-premises data sources will need a Power BI gateway.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Im not referring to a specific API, but a "generic" component between the world wide web and protected resources (on premise). Like for example Tyk or Kong or Layer7 et cetera. For example... what if "Power BI Gateway" is a texteditor and you would recommend Microsoft Word. Can i use open office instead? or notepad? Ofcourse, this is not about what is best or not.
@@RADACAD"Power BI connection to your on-premises data sources will need a Power BI gateway" ... maybe i am asking the wrong question... is it possible to establish a Power BI connection to my on-premise data source with a "regular" Gateway? if not, what is so special about that Power BI Gateway compare to regular (API) Gateways?
Nice Video, are you related to Tej Lavani, you look like twins
