She just liked the centaur world, his problem wasn’t that he couldn’t tell she liked him, it was that he didn’t believe himself to be worthy of love due to his internalized racism. What I’m saying is he was in fact beautiful and able to be loved as he was. It's hard to say which of the Elktaur's two halves is worse. The Elk/Nowhere King on the one hand chose to lash out at everyone and everything around him out of petty revenge against the General, trying to burn down both worlds so that innocent humans and innocent centaurs alike would all feel as miserable as he did. The General on the other hand was the epitome of selfishness, treating his counterpart terribly to keep the Princess for himself and letting the war continue indefinitely at the expense of his human followers so that he continue to exist. Between the two of them they're responsible for the unnecessary loss of countless lives.

The Elk would do the same as the general and the general would do the same things the elk did. The original elktaur was already selfish, selfcentered (he experimented on a freaking baby! baby plant but still sentient and sapient) and selfhating, the split beeings just practise this in different ways.
Also like Horse said it was not love. The whole falling in love with her felt more like stalker logic, love at first sight because she is pretty, than she is nice to him and boom she is the picture of his perfect world to him, but he never listen to what she actually says and want.
And after she disapeared (a self sacrifice that he believed killed her) he does nothing to honour her or her sacrifice, because he never split himself for her, only for himself.

The Elktaur split himself into two parts, who are essentially the same person except in appearance. They're both copies but one got the shorter end of the stick whilst the other got everything they wanted.

The way the elk was tortured and imprisoned makes me think of the oubliette, a historical torture device which consists of a cramped, tiny cell that was basically a hole in the ground, where prisoners were starved and forgotten and left to go mad. Moreover, these torture cells were mainly reserved for the rivals of nobles, examples being the political enemies of the Normans when France was conquering England around the 1000s. So it might make sense that the general would use an oubliette to seal away his rival who would strip him of both his position and the woman he married by revealing the truth.

God the perfect show of how two sides of the same coin would react to each other if they could. However I've seen that both of them really did not have to resort to any of this. Murder, Genocide, Imprisonment, hell even the original split wasn't justified. The original version of both immediately jumped to conclusions and it ultimately lead to the War of Man and Beast. He should've learned humility and compassion before doing something that would alter the course of all the lives that aren't even involved in the first place.
However if I were to choose a side, I'd obviously choose the Nightmare King's, and if possible, The Woman's as well.
