1. Copy shortcut of VLC to Desktop or wherever you want
2. Open properties of VLC shortcut
3. At the end of the Target box, add --demux h264
4. Run that specific VLC shortcut and open/drag H264 video into VLC
This fix worked for me. NOTE: there is a [space] after the target box path and (2) hypens

Let me help you out.
Simple instructions:
Open VLC > click TOOLS > PREFERENCES > select at bottom left settings ALL > select DEMUXERS in the list > click the drop down arrow on the right and select H264 DEMUXER
> click SAVE . end

easiest fix to my problem. tried different players and wasnt able to play .dav files. this worked for me. Thanks.

how did you get it to work? i followed the video exactly but I cant get any video to play. The time bar moves but no video shows up. Only shows the VLC cone.
Check again, if the selected codec in the Demuxer shows H.264 or HEVC/H.265. Or if it shows the cone, try clicking on Play first. Or, right-click on a video clip, select 'Properties' then check if the type of file is .264.
@@biffboy6000 Same for me, but I found a fix. For some reason, the above fix in this video does not always work for everyone. Bug maybe?

I think if the video came with the audio, then it should be heard. Problem is, the video came from a street camera.

I have a 4SDOT surveillance cam and this didn't work for me.. I followed all the instructions for the H264 file and it only shows a picture of an album cover.. any suggestions?

It will worked so only if you install H264 - MPEG-4 AVC (part 10) (h264) codec before.

I try on vlc 3.0.7 it's not working.
So what does vlc try to do with the h264 files before you tell it not to automatically mess it up?
Security cameras come in mixed codecs but the most used is H.264. Dash cameras are 1080 HD and MP4 codec. For Dash cameras video, leave it in Automatic. For H.264, you have to scroll down and select H.264. One day VLC developers with update the software to take H.264 files on Automatic setting. There are also other codecs for, DV, AVI, MPEG, etc.
Today 2023-09-29, this setting no longer works. I did it correctly and it doesn't work.
I'm like the majority of most comments. It didn't work for me either, you know what I did.....

Stupid solution that breaks avi, mp4 and mkv playback.
After the fix it assumes ALL files need h264 demuxing. Bad solution.

i have 16 channel dvr, how do you pick which camera to view? now it looks like all 16 playing at once.
Doesn't work
It works but if I click on the time bar below the video screen to skip forward or backward to check the video, the video freezes while the bar continues to move towards the end. The only way for the video to work is to delete the screen and reopen it again. I I want to speed up the video, no buttons work either, except the Play, Pause and stop button. When I click on Tool, Preferences, then hit the 'input/codecs', then the Show settings = 'ALL' radio button, then hit the Demuxers and then look on the field on the right where I had selected H.264 earlier, I find that the H.264 has changed to HEVC/H.265 video demuxer. Why it change behind my back? Does this change cause the video to freeze or stop, but only allow the time bar below to keep moving?

H.264 (.h264) is only video, if you wanted video and audio, it'd need to be in a container like .mp4, or .mkv etc. So, you won't be able to hear it.
I did so, and now I do not play mp4 files. How do I make the h264 and mp4 files play at the same time?

I couldn't get it to work. What I did was get was a free download
called SHOTCUT. When you load an H264/H265 file it invites you
to convert to .mp4 - Oh, hell yeah! And it does quick & easy.
