I've been using VLC for a decade and NEVER knew it had a built in converter! THANK YOU!
I've been using OBS for like 2 years now and this is just the time that I realize that I can just convert my mkv file to mp4 through OBS. Thanks for this, really!!
Dude same
i searched this up bc i need an intro
Tip: if you wan't to convert anything to any file just use "format factory"
Same. Well deserved like!
@@yoavhaklai6819 where do I get that?
Another very useful video ... so convenient I was about to "google it" and CZcams read my mind and this video popped up as a recommended view .
Kevin, thanks for making your presentation so clear and easy. You are a fine instructor indeed!
I have been converting video files in a very simple, quick way and it has always worked with no problems. Just click on the file, left click to select 'rename file', place curser at end of old file extension, delete a click at a time the old extension (mov, flv, avi, etc.) up to the dot, add mp4 then... enter. DONE !!

“videos like this one made me really love CZcams University! you can learn online without tuition fees to pay for...”
I've been using VLC Media Player for several years now. It's my player of choice as it seems to play virtually anything that I want to view without any issues. MKV files can be quite large and it's great to be able to convert them into the more common and usable MP4 format. Thank you for the video, it's is very helpful.
No you have it backwards MP4 files are quite large MKVs have a greater compression rate. When you convert to MP4 you're making the video larger and when you convert to .mkv you're making it smaller while keeping the quality. .mkv is the prefferd format. I'm a video editor and I have made videos and converted them from .mkv to mp4 and the mp4s were always bigger. That's why when you download an mkv it 654 mbs and when you download and mp4 it's 1gig. Unless it's like a blu ray file or something mkv is always smaller.
@@jamesheinrich5338 Hey there, any idea why an mkv to Mp4 conversion can't be played by my media players?
I have been using VLC for literally decades ... and I did not know it can transcode video formats! I've always used Adobe Premiere Pro / Media Converter for most things video but it doesn't support the MKV container. Brilliant! You are one clever guy, Kevin.
Something to note. The time bar across the bottom is not the time it will take. It will show the length of the video, for instance in my case a 20 minute MKV. The progression is where it is in the video at that moment. For me it took almost 50 minutes to convert to MP4 that 20 minute video. I had closed everything else I could see that was open and went in the background and ended all tasks that didn't need to be running to see if that helped, but not by much. The output did have sound for VLC. I had problems with other software having no sound in the MP4. Why it worked with this one and not the others, I couldn't say. I see comments from several that this way of doing it they still had no sound. I'd suggest a google search on VLC MKV to MP4 conversion no audio.
seriously you're my lifesaver for online classes, big help thank you!

Thank you for this CZcams channel. I've learned a lot of useful information from you!
Wonderful I did not know! Thank you!
I can't thank you enough for this video! I had no idea that OBS had a built-in converter lying right by the place I'm always clicking to find my vids! super helpful 5/5!!!
That OBS remux is a lifesaver!!! Thank you!
tysm i was going crazy untill i found this video :)

I've tried with VLC but ended up converting my vids with OBS and it worked. Thank you Mr Kevin!
Thank you. I started the process of using VLC because of OBS Studios only to find out halfway through at the end of the video of how to do it withing OBS. That streamlines things a great deal.
That's fine. However, sometimes there are subtitles in the mkv, and you might want to embed them in the resulting mp4 file. It is also possible to do this using VLC, using the "Edit profile" button in the "Convert" dialog. Then go to "Subtitles" and use the respective checkbox.
@@ExpressClips001 your mums rubbish
man said a valid point
I needed this.
i've been using VLC for years but never knew it can convert video. Now I don't have to download other converter. Thanks Kevin.
Happy to help!
wow i actually had no idea i could convert mkv to mp4s this entire time with obs, thanks !
Nice video. Thanks for creating a video on my suggestion.
Thanks again for the idea Mike! I had it on my list and just got around to making it 👍
@@KevinStratvert 👍🏻👍
neither VLC or OBS converted the file to MP4! VLC did something but the new "converted" file was still an MKV! and OBS did literally nothing! be cool if you could update this video!
This is happening with me at the moment. Did you find any solutions?
@@Filmsbyrose did you ??
@@Skylin2s I did!!! There’s an app called handbreak I use!!
@@Filmsbyrose thx I just use it for another btw I found app called XMedia Recorde for convert
In vlc while choosing where the converted file to be placed you have to type the name then press ok it'll change the format to mp4
Thank you Keven, You are a marvelous trainer, and problem solver
Thank you so much. All your videos are helpful, very informative, direct to the point and it really works.
I have tried VLC on a number of AVI files to MP4. But, for MKV to MP4, use Handbrake. It's free and has far more quality and subtitle options and it's far easier to use. And, you can do a batch of MKV's and let it run overnight.
I tried to install handbrake and it tells me that i have something missing, but i already download it again
Thanks very interesting. I have to be honest and say I thought you were going to use Handbrake, which is a dedicated video file conversion tool. I didn’t know OBS could be used for conversion. For the more advanced user I would suggest using ffmpeg in the terminal as you can the directly copy from MKV to MP4 without re-encoding. Perhaps a follow-up video using ffmpeg ?
thank you so much I've been struggling for days after obs recorded it i mkv and this finally worked!
THANK YOU SOO MUCH I WAS FREAKING OUT BEFORE I SAW THIS THANK YOU SO MUCH!
followed instructions to a tee, but it just re-saves as another mkv
wow it rhymes so perfectly
same
It's probably because you saved it as the same name as the file you was converting. It will auto fill with the other name, still ending in the .mkv. So just try saving it as another name.
@@Electro_Edits I've been trying to do this forever!!!!!! Thank you!!

Me too have you found the answer ?
@Carlos Bolanos This happened to me when attempting to convert to MP4, I instead converted to "HD for CZcams" and it worked
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm working on some projects and I was scared when I encountered this format. Also, thank you for teaching how to use OBS as a converter too.

Perhaps because this video is from 3 years ago.

Thanks, man! Always a great help
HandBrake! The only way to convert media files PERIOD.
4k?
thanks so much! i previously used handbrake to try and convert mkvs/webm video files into mp4s so i could edit them. it worked 1 time (took 3 hours for a 3min video), and then after that it would only successfully convert like 20 seconds of the video before quitting. i tried using it again and it estimated to take TEN hours to convert a 3 min video… so i switched to vlc and it works so well !! only takes 2 or so hours :)
Thank you!!!!!!!!! I have converted w/VLC for years. It is now way too buggy/frustrating. I have also used OBS for years too. I had no idea conversion was available, quick and simple.. Thanks!!!
Thank you because of you I could change my mkv file into MP4
