I agree with the “in spite of” part! Sanghvi needlessly tries to pin Sampath down into simplistic positions that aren’t Sampath’s. And accuses him of weaseling out of them if he refuses to accept them!
Unfortunately, we’re stuck with blaming Savarkar for the communalist version of Hindutva that RSS has projected - when there were few leaders more liberal and intellectually as comprehensive as Savarkar.
And we’re also stuck with the Left branding Sampath as a Rightist stooge for not going along with a simplistic portrayal of Savarkar.

Of all the choices for the title for the video, you chose what Savarkar thought about cow worship? This is what is called Hinduphobia. Clearly you made a deliberate choice. I have no intent of watching after you chose such a title. I am a Nastik yet I find your choice of this title offensive. You would not dare post an interview with Sampath on Ambedkar’s views on Islam and chose a title offensive to Muslims. Yet somehow you think such titles are fair game when it comes to Hindus. Even worse is that you perhaps chose to ask Sampath what Savarkars views on cow worship was. This was done with a premeditated intent to post it under the chosen title. In short disgusting.

British confiscated all of the properties of Savarkar brothers, denied his book and barrister royalties, didn’t allow him to practice law, and he was sick and old. The fact is Savarkar was in abject poverty after his release.
Savarkar had 2 heart attacks, countless health conditions and was nearly on death bed after his release. I mean he spent 11-12 years of his life in the most inhumane conditions that no other major/popular freedom fighter has had go through. He had the most severe designation by the British even after his release, so much so that he under house arrest for 3 years and not allowed to leave town for 3 more years. Give him a break for “not directly getting involved in freedom struggle”
He wasn’t frustrated but disenchanted and disappointed after seeing capitulation of national movement that lead freedom, partition and overall condition of Hindus in their own country.

How about recognising the mortal danger of fascist Hindutva ideology by Sorryvarkar?
In a speech before a 20,000 strong audience at Pune on 1 August 1938, Savarkar stood by Germany's right to Nazism and Italy's to Fascism; their achievement of unprecedent glory in the world-stage and a successful inculcation of national solidarity justified those choices. Savarkar criticized Nehru for denouncing Germany and Italy, proclaiming that "crores of Hindu Sanghatanists in India [..] cherish[ed] no ill-will towards Germany or Italy or Japan." He proclaimed his support for the German occupation of Czechoslovakia in the same breath.
As World War II become imminent, Savarkar had initially advocated a policy of neutralism centered on India's geostrategic equations but his rhetoric grew coarser with time and he expressed consistent support for Hitler's policy about Jews. In a speech on 14 October, it was suggested that Hitler's ways be adopted for dealing with Indian Muslims. On 11 December, he characterized the Jews as a communal force. Next March, Savarkar would welcome Germany's revival of Aryan culture, their glorification of Swastika, and the "crusade" against Aryan enemies - it was hoped that German victory would finally invigorate the Hindus of India.

    1883 Birth
1905 (Age21) Leader of First big anti-British rule protest
1909 (Age25) Arrested in London. Jail term starts
1924 (Age 40) House arrest starts with totally damaged health. (Gandhi's all jail terms were also house arrests with a minor difference. Gandi's house arrests were with 5-star hotel amenities, servant support, and a larger Rs500 compensation. Yes, Sawarkar's "pension" was also called "Compensation". Most British officers and judges had good English mastery to know the difference between compensation and pension. )
1937 (Age 54) Free man again. Lost precious youth period in jail. Had he been a free man like Gandhi, he "might" have been a big force parallel to Congress in that period. But History is history. By 1937 British were already talking about giving dominion status and seat sharing between Hindus and Muslims. The freedom struggle was practically over. Now only Hindu-Muslim seat sharing negotiation was a "stumbling block".
1947 Partition of India (as per the book by Ambedkar, Partition was fiercely opposed by Sawarkar, fiercely championed by Ambedkar, and played both ways by Gandhi & Nehru)

Except the muslim hatred part, Gandhi is ideologically more suitable for BJP and RSS than Savarkar.
If RSS and BJP leave that part, you will find out Gandhi is 99.99% saying the same things which BJP/RSS says.
Gandhi believed in cow protection, vegitarian diet, religious, Ram ji, Indian past glories, Caste system, Pooja, Mantras, Indian philosophical supremacy, etc.
Savarkar was more of modern scientific and logical person. He didn't believe in this nonsense of traditional values and caste system.
He even made fun of those who said Cow is mother. He simply said how can an animal be your mother?
I would have supported Savarkar if he didn't have hatred for one community. Not bcz I love that community or they are some great people, but bcz you cannot survive by hating someone. You cannot remain sane if you are a "hat_eful big_ot".
And obviously, I don't consider "Cow as mother" but I cannot support eating beef.
Even if you don't like caste system, if you are born in ine caste you get few things since your childhood.
Me feeding cows and giving first Roti to them my entire childhood, cannot accept the idea of eating beef or even seeing someone doing that.

I don't judge Savarkar for his letters.
But the problem is, after getting out of jail, he followed all the conditions imposed on him.
Even after 1937, he didn't get directly involved in the freedom struggle.
Also, whatever Vikram Sampat can say, but Savarkar was not starving for 60 rs British pension but he still accepted that. He actually demanded that. That puts a lot of questions on him.
Also, if we see, Savarkar weight was increased in Kala Pani. He was tortured for the 1st 1-2 years but after that he has his way.
He never participated in any protest in Andaman and this can be found out from his own writings.
So he was a great scholar, freedom fighter till he was arrested but after that he was just thinking about getting out of jail and then after coming out of jail, he didn't find relevance in Indian society.
He seemed like a frustrated guy who thinks (and rightly so) that he was more talented than Gandhi and still cannot win against him.
That frustration is the whole legacy of Savarkar, obviously after his revolutionary work till he got arrested.

But a great leader should not be measured by his/her intellectual prowess bcz this cannot be the criteria for a leadership.
Leaders should understand, foresee the future and are able to lead der people from the existing/current mess.
Gandhi was able to do that. We can see the Jinnah failed measurably.
