A lot of Eurovision fans seem really opposed to London hosting Eurovision next year. There seems to be some sort of bias against larger cities hosting Eurovision for whatever reason. After the Netherlands won Eurovision 2019, a lot of Eurovision fans similarly did not want Amsterdam to host. I personally wouldn't mind London hosting Eurovision.

Fans wanted the capital cities but the country or broadcaster because of some internal politics…

    • @EmoBearRights
      @EmoBearRights Před rokem +3

I think it's a sort of counterweight to capital cities rather than large ones because unless it's a place like Portugal which has only hosted once then there is precedent for the capital to have hosted before. Also with London and I think with Amsterdam too there's a feeling that the capital often gets all the pie so to speak and so there's a will to spread things around to counter that. The contest this year illustrates another problem with capitals - Rome didn't have a big enough venue but like London is a very old capital and very congested because of and expensive because it's the capital. Like the Italy there are a lot of local rivalries between different regions in the UK with them having strong local indenties. Germany is also similar to Italy in that it's existence as one country is comparatively recent and each of its component parts has a different history - it's noticeable it has never staged a concert in Berlin even in 2010 when the city wasn't divided anymore.

Cardiff is a good call as it has a second stadium next door to the Principality, and there are acres of land across the street from that at Bute Park where they built the fanzone when they hosted the Champions League Final. Also, BBC Wales' brand new state of the art HQ is next door to the stadium and hard wired into it with fibre optic cabling.

London, even though it seems 'boring' would be the most appropiate choice, since it is Ukraine's show and it should not be a UK focused cultural Show thus London would be the most international and 'neutral' host city. to me, I will prefer Manchester. why?
-not in London (there is a tendency of the BBC wanting to do many things outside London)
-it has a suitable arena (Manchester Arena, now named AO Arena due to naming sponsorship; capacity of up to 21,000)
-it now has BBC's Eurovision production headquarters, so logistically it will be easier for the production.
-it has the largest Ukrainian refugees outside London.
rounding up my top four cities that I want to host, alongside Manchester, are:
-Glasgow (but I slightly don't prefer it to London, because Glasgow's proposed venue looks more like a theatre than an indoor arena; rather gives me some Tel Aviv 2019 vibes, which I don't personally prefer)
-Birmingham (should be in the same venue as of the 1998 contest, which is the National Indoor Arena [now named Utilita Arena Birimingham due to sponsorship], but with full capacity of up to 15,800 being used instead of only 4,000 used in 1998)
-London (should be the iconic O2 Arena)
I think those four will be the frontrunners.

I live in London so would love it be here but the best choice is probably Manchester - large Ukranian dispora so relatively easy to incorporate Ukranian culture and giving some tickets out to that community to sooth some ruffled feathers over them not being the hosts, plus long established Polish disapora, close to BBC HQ in Salford, away from capital not so expensive as London, international airport, great musical city - from the 60s to Oasis - I think Oasis are overated but they are well known and liked and influential. Plus Wembley is a bit old so might not be up to load bearing LED screens and the O2 is ironically booked up playing host to Maneskin and their fans. Glasgow is a good choice too and it's only the lack of a Ukranian community that counts against it.
Deban listen to William - yes it's very LGBT+ friendly but they don't have a big enough venue and after to waiting more than twenty years there are going to be a....lot...of...fans who will want to go. You will need a big venue. As a Londoner - Brighton would be great but like the Ukranians you have to get real here.
I worked for Liverpool museums around the turn of Millinieum - I'd welcome a chance to go back, big Ukranian community too.
Leicester's my uni city - great curries there.

Since then it has almost always been elsewhere. Birmingham, Edinburgh, Brighton, Harrogate....
You have to look at the best option organize-wise to host it, not to the most beautiful or most 'special' city. Also it's Ukraine's win, not UK's. BIRMINGHAM! So much our history and culture is unrecognised! We don't shout about it as much as other cities. We're going to roar from now on and the Commonwealth Games from Birmingham 2022 has lit that pride and fire under us.
Birmingham is the 2nd City, it's historic influence and it's size alone makes it such. We hosted the Eurovision Song Contest the last time it was around too. We can do it.

I’m happy as long as it’s not in the South of England or Northern Ireland. The south has done enough and NI is too difficult to get to for most Britons. The Cardiff Principality Stadium also feels too big for this event. Rugby and Eurovision have never been in the same sentence. I’d prefer Glasgow as it’s poignant given the Eurovision movie filming there but I’d be happy with Manchester. I live near Leeds but I doubt it’d be held there as much as I’d be overjoyed.

tactically it would make sense if Manchester is chosen seeing as the BBC are trying expand away from just London as their main hub. Plus AJ presenting the jury votes from Salford Quays/MediaCity was telling! Glasgow would obviously make sense, including as a nod to the fans, but not sure if the Tories would enjoy a Scottish welcome...

You may not know, but Manchester is building a new arena, even larger than the existing AO Arena. It should be ready in time for ESC 2023 and will hold 23,000 people. Add the huge route network for Manchester airport and the large (and ever increasing) number of hotel rooms, it makes a strong case for Manchester (and Salford for the BBC).
If the UK hosts the contest, I'd like a strong Ukrainian stamp on the show though. Maybe the hosts and postcards could all be Ukrainian? I'm sure this can be worked out.
Having said all that and as a proud Salford-born Mancunian, I think the Principality stadium in Cardiff would be an amazing venue with the roof closed.

I think the reason why countries themselves are skeptical of hosting in really huge cities is because it would be overwhelming. Italy didn't want to have it in Rome last year, so maybe the UK would feel the same about London. Amsterdam is also packed with tourists, I'm told, so it was better for Rotterdam to host.
It's different with smaller capital cities like Vienna or Stockholm. Of course, there are a lot of people there as well, but not to the level of Rome or London.
I think my vote goes to Glasgow. It may be the last chance for the UK to host it in Scotland.

As a proud Irishman, I want Belfast to host the contest in 2023 (Dublin is only 2 hours from Belfast).
However, I know it will be in either Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham and *maybe* Cardiff (the Senedd has supported a hosting bid).
The reality is, the UK has so many great options and I don't think they can go wrong with wherever they put it.
By the way, I suggest that you also make a video of who could host Eurovision if it is, indeed, in the UK because there are so many people who could host it and host it well. @wiwibloggs

I would love it if Newcastle (my hometown) gets to host it with the Utilita Arena. It's got the infrastructure and I totally get what William was saying re strangers tend to be friendlier further north and I really feel that with Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester! Newcastle has produced great musical talent as well like Jimmy Nail and Sam Fender.
Even though I now live near London, I'd rather the contest was not held there because there's too much going on in the city. I doubt London would give Eurovision fans a true taste of the best of us.
My preference however has to be Manchester. It's a great city with wonderful community spirit. It would be an incredible story for the arena to host the event after what happened there in May 2017. There are many areas that could also accommodate the Eurovision Village plus just next door to the arena is the History of Football Museum (Eurovision and football - my 2 favourite favourite favourite hugely favourite things in the entire world)!!!!!!!!
There is also great public transport links - 4 train stations including one at the airport. Victoria train station is even attached to the arena! It has great connectivity with the rest of the north and all over the south. Finally, strangers are genuinely kind to each other in Manchester so it would be very welcoming to Eurovision fans and I'm confident it would host a great contest!
