- Today I've once again switched things up and decided to do a review of Faxanadu for the Nintendo Entertainment system. Faxanadu is a game which carries the "hidden gem" moniker. So let's turn on the Nintendo and take a look to see if it lives up to the hype!

You did my game well, good sir. This was AWESOME! It was everything I hoped you'd say and then some. I can't wait to see what you put together next!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I hope you didn't miss the "Welcome to Hard Mode" comment 😂
@@quwebs I did not miss that one bit! I was honoured to be cameo'd!
You know you are good if the legend mistress Gorya is here!!!
@@nustde00 Quwebs is a phenomenal video-maker! I hope he'll continue to do more of this kind of content, especially if it has to do with my favourite games!
I'm glad you mentioned this channel on your page and streams. My kind of thing... reminds me of first playing this game. I was like awesome, another zelda II... I'm going to have to go back to this one again
If you spend the 1500 to exactly zero you can get another 1500 from the king. Also, I loved the fact it told you to chill and remember your mantra. I remember that calming me down after getting killed many many times.
Thank you for pronouncing the name correctly.
I had never heard of this game when I got it from my dad for Christmas. I remember feeling a little disappointed to get a game I hadn't heard of. It ended up being one of my favorite games of all time.
I know the feeling! I remember receiving Kabuki Quantum Fighter as a birthday gift and put off playing for months because it looked so... odd. I ended up loving it!
No matter how it’s pronounced someone will say it’s wrong. I too grew up pronouncing the ‘x’ with a “ks” sound. But people kept telling me that the Japanese title uses a “z” sound.
The katakana characters are ファザナドゥ which is approximately pronounced “fa za na du.” It’s a mashup of “Famicom” and “Xanadu.”
One of the most underrated games on the nes. I loved this one as a kid
Totally agree! I'd like to do a deathless run of Faxandu sometime.

"I feel that dark and gritty look contributes to the overall feeling of foreboding that seems to permeate the world of Faxanadu"
Beautifully said!
Great job, quwebs! This is one of my favorite NES games from my childhood and I think you did a great job covering it here. Glad to have your videos now pop up on my subscription list. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the kind words and for checking out the review! I wish I had owned Faxanadu as a child and I can totally see why there are so many "Faxanafans" out in the wild 😆
Yes sir! This was fun to watch. I really liked the checklist on the right-hand side letting me know what's getting covered. Of course, being one of my favorites, I applaud your comments of all the wonderful things in this game: the colors, the feel, the mood, the music, etc.. and scoff at the gripes :) (ok ok.. the keys are a pain), but overall really enjoyed watching this and I'd like to watch more. Also, nice work mentioning the Pendant. Only the foolhardy grab this item...
I knew you wanted to fight. Pendant Playthroughs for Life!
Hey Ren! Thanks for checking out the review and I'm glad you liked it! Beating Faxanadu with the Pendant should be a rite of passage if it isn't already 😅
@@hungrygoriya I'm clearly still not over you trying to sabotage our beautiful playthrough >:)

I really enjoyed this game when it came out on the NES, great video!
My very first screenname on AOL was "Faxsanadu". As a child, I misspelled the title. It goes without saying this was one of my favorite games as a child. Such a unique and difficult RPG for the day.
I've been considering reviewing Faxanadu again for the NES Abridged series. This was my first review ever and now I kind of grimace when I re-watch it. I wish I had the opportunity to play Faxanadu as a kid, but better late than never I suppose!
I understand what you mean. Coming from your most recent video to your FIRST video I was very curious to see where you'd come from content-wise. If you do make a new one, please keep THIS one up for posterity! It's not a bad video by any means. Good enough to earn my sub!
Alright youtube, you win, I watched it, OKAY! 😂It's so interesting to contrast this with your Abridged videos and the different approaches :) This definitely has the long form review feel to it, well structured and well explained. Good job, past quwebs!
This was my first review ever - I had no idea what I was doing. I mean I still don't but I also didn't know then either.
@@quwebs You did good for your first time ever :D (Your new ones are obviously better, but this wasn't bad at all!)
"Don't try too hard" is probably a localization issue more than anything, I'm afraid. I mean, I haven't confirmed this, but it's most likely a direct translation of 無理しないで ("muri shinai de") or 無茶しないで ("mucha shinai de"), which are things you might say to a departing traveler who's leaving on a dangerous journey. If I were translating either of them in the context of Faxanadu, I'd likely go with "Take care" or "Godspeed" as opposed to the more literal "Don't try too hard" or "Don't overdo it."
That still fits pretty well with your interpretation, though! It is meant to help convey a sense of urgency, danger, and crushing oppression, I believe, that ordinary townsfolk feel the need to wish you well when they see that you're a geared-up adventurer headed out into the hellscape that the World Tree has become.
Thank you!! I never knew this, but I always suspected something like it. Oh God, it feels so good to know that gut feeling was right! Thank you!
That was a great game! A friend of mine sold it to me in 6th grade, saying it was too hard for him. I'm not sure I ever beat it myself, but there was definitely enough of a world in it to enjoy the journey.
Excellent review! This approach to game reviews is excellent!
Thank you Ken! I really appreciate you watching it and I hope to make more in the future 😊
omg, the world/enemy design, the game style, losing exp when dying, this was basically Dark Souls....
The weird and dark atmosphere of this game fascinated me and had a profound effect on my tastes I think.
One of my favorite game, I think I managed to finish this game out of pure trial and error, as I didn't know English back then when playing this game, nor did I bother to read the instruction manual which actually had pretty good mangaish art.
Also in the Japanese version, you can name your Hero and also the "Guru" are Christian Priest as there is a supposed Jesus like cross at the Gurus not to mention he is wearing a Cross. The Keymaker is actually smoking as well.
So many old games need a modern sequel (2D aka metroidvania)
with pendant is what the default difficulty curve is, and without is buffed - it's like an if-then-else where they screw up the logic (like putting == instead of !=, for C-based languages).
your interpretation with the "not to seriously" part is off - its a lost-in-translation issue. Even as a kid playing this, I just cocked my head and when on playing without much consideration because certain games (I would later learn were made in Japan) had odd text in them, but also because even serious games would have comedy in places - a quirky character.
i wish they would remake this one!
I would replay this game a ton. I liked everything about it.
Same! Thanks for checking out my review!
My older sister played this at a friends house and came home determined for us to get it. We searched the creek near our house for lost golf balls (it bordered a course), cleaned them up, and sold them in egg cartons for $6 each. We were able to buy it after only a month!
Oh my god, I can't believe how much your childhood mirrors my own. We also lived near a golf course and they paid us money to return the golf balls. I would collect golf balls to buy new games! That's so awesome!
I like the spelling of "dworf" ;-)
right on, ive always loved this game...
Great game, great review. Here, take this Sub
Best video on this game!!
I played it when I was kid
Always thought he looked like Hacksaw Jim Duggan when I was a kid.
Solid!
haha that programming error makes the game think you always have the pendant until you get it. oopsie
Why do I feel like Elden Ring had some inspiration from this concept?
Yep, great game. The Famicom Xanadu. Fah Xanadu. Unless I'm misled on that... (Totally called it FAX Xanadu as a kid)
Loved this game
Do you need a key to open a door?
I find it a shame to waste part of the screen with the menu, it does not add value that it is visible continuously. Cheers! :)
Fair point, thanks for the feedback!

omg omg i think a battle royale version of this game (like super mario 35) would work
Hah that's a pretty neat idea! Super Mario 35 is a blast!
It just occurred to me: If it's a sequel to Xanadu, then should it actually be pronounced: "fah-ZAN-a-du"? not Fax.
In Japan that's how they say it. But of course back in the day no one knew about the history of this game so we just said Fax - Anadu and it stuck.
why does no one say this game title correct?? even AFTER saying Xanadu correct....like how do you mess that up??
FaZANadu
Hell no! That was a misrepresentation of the god-awful passwords in this game. They were at least 4 times longer than what you showed and written in a hard to read font. 0's and O's looked identical and J's looked like F's.
And the e looked like c!
this game sucks. ive hated it for 30 years. the fighting mechanics and movement are trash. it is an unfun rpg / platformer. its worse than ET for the atari.
This game sucks remember to rent it when I was young, was so boring that almost killed myself, worst rental ever.
I always called it Fuxanadu!
