The game's relation to the Darius shmup series is as follows:
Several bosses from this game also appear in Darius Force/Super Nova, and Syvalion itself was also a boss in Dariusburst (as well as its Another Chronicle and Chronicle Saviours variants), btw, which is actually disguised as Dark Helios, and appears when that boss takes enough damage. Also, The tileset of this game was used in the X68000 version of Bubble Bobble, under the name Sybubblun (which is a hidden game in that port), since both Bubble Bobble and Syvalion were ported to the X68000.
RIP Fukio Mitsuji.
Wow there are a lot more connections than I thought

Awesome thanks for the info dumps!
Also in the arcade version (not sure if this is the case in the SNES ver. as well), one of the power-ups you can get is a golden version of the player ship from Darius (Silver Hawk), which will accompany you and fire at enemies with a rapid firing laser shot.
It's all in the Taito-verse, man. Darius enemies appear in the Genesis version of Rainbow Islands, and you even get a sushi boat with King Fossil in it in Space Invaders '95: Attack of the Lunar Loonies.
(Wonders if the Taito-verse and the Square-verse are now interconnected...)
This seems like something that could get a revival as a full-blown roguelite and be pretty dang good.
Cryptark seems similar in some form.
It's not a shmup, but FTL has the same kind of "going through space having random adventures" vibe.
@@PhoenixUltima I ended up playing through FTL on PC so many times, I bought an old iPad Mini just so i could play it on the go
For real that looks like an untapped gold mine
Revival? Clone that game!
just a cool little thing about the original arcade game, it was actually a mid res game, it was a higher res than most arcade or video game systems at the time at 24khz, which is kind of like 512x 400p. Seeing this running on original hardware is pretty amazing.
I like this game a lot. Picking it up and finishing after 20 minutes and having it change the story every time you come back is really cool and makes for good replay value.
This feels like another one of those games that you have on your show that if I had as a kid I would’ve loved it growing up
Glad to see this channel is still going strong
Think of a game I have absolutely never heard about before. Can't believe there was a quasi shoot em up with randomized levels for the SNES, let alone with that singular design!
The thing about Europe is we also got the PAL releases in Australia, but only 6 people bought them here, and so we have the perfect storm where the games came out here in Australian exclusive ratings versions even rarer than the Europe versions, but no one bought them, so no one even remembers them coming out. If you try to research these releases you get only US or European information, and so Australia is obscure, rare and unique. No one gives a fuck though.
If it makes you feel any better, I give lots of fuck about Australia.
Are there any AUS release games which substantially change from EUR releases? Let's forget the PS2-era embarrassment of releasing TOCA under the name V8 Supercars.
@@JamieBainbridge I can only think of Beetle Racing for N64 being reskinned with Holden Cars. I also think the Australian release of TMNT for NES is the only version that didn't replace Ninja with Hero (although it was ita coded). I do find the SNES AUS carts and boxes look better than the European releases, Terranigma being a good example.
@@JamieBainbridge as previously mentioned I can think of HSV racing on N64, a reskin of beetle racing. On NES there were some exclusives, Aussie Rules Footy on NES. There was also Brian Lara Cricket vs Shane Warne Cricket in the 16 bit era that spring to mind. Re skins were common, exclusive Aus games not so much.
Looks like a fun, short game. Replay value comes from random mazes and random story events, so I could see blowing through it a few times.
Ecco the Fyre Breather

Although we missed out on some good games and the format wasn't great for games developed in 60hz, the silver lining was PAL regions didn't get a lot of really bad games that had failed in the US market.
I remember seeing this game in a Nintendo Power preview and wondering what happened to it. They arranged it after two other games with dragons (don't want to ride a dragon? What about a dragon shaped spaceship?). Also, the game above with the aforementioned mode 7 dragon riding was called "Final Fantasy Adventure 2," the US working title for "Secret of Mana."
Thank you for pointing out yet another rather obscure title for the Super Nintendo! Since I discovered your great channel, it has helped me find many a hidden gem well worth playing. I also greatly appreciate your coverage of Japan-only RPGs, since I'm really into those. I always look forward to your next review - keep up the good work!
If I may, here are a few suggestions of lesser-known Super Famicom RPGs and strategy games for which there isn't yet good coverage here on CZcams. Maybe you would like to take a look at some of those. At least a few of them should have an English patch available.
"Daikaijuu Monogatari 1+2" : Two really good-looking RPGs. The first part has been translated as "Super Shells Monster Story".
"Elfaria 1+2": Two RPGs with great graphics. The first part is said to suffer from auto battles with bad AI, but I couldn't find any detailed analysis.
"Farland Story 1+2" - A tactical RPG series in the tradition of "Shining Force". The second part features some very nice battle animations.
"Feda: The Emblem of Justive" - Another "Shining Force"-style tactical RPG with decent gameplay and a pretty good story. Mind that the English fan translation adds raucous humour that isn't featured in the Japanese original.
"Hanjuku Hero": A Squaresoft Super Famicom game no one ever talks about? I was massively surprised to discover this one. It combines real-time strategy with monster hatching in a really original fashion.
"Heracles no Eikoo 3+4": Two RPGs distinguished by their setting in Ancient Greece mythology.
"The Magical Land of Wozz": A quite well-made RPG with a full fan translation available.
The "Super Robot Wars" series of Mecha strategy games, to my knowledge consisting of "SRW 3/4/EX/Gaiden" and the offshoot "Battle Robot Retsuden".
"Sword World SFC 1+2": Two really good-looking RPGs with customizable characters based on a popular series of pen-and-paper games.
I think a “arcade track ball games that need a modern port” would be a great video idea, top of my list would be the Sonic arcade game. Additionally, I know the track ball makes converting those old arcades to modern consoles difficult, but I feel like the track pads on something like the Steam Deck would almost perfectly replicate that control scheme, not sure if I’m just crazy for thinking that but it’s making sense in my half awake brain right now.
It's like playing a Gradius III spinoff as one of the sand dragons from the first level.
That trademark SNES funky bass-line
My first experience of this game was on the ps2. Was one of the memorable games on Taito legends. Def a fun game.
Just noticed that the music sounds *very* similar to the Serris boss battle in Metroid Fusion. Which is also a long, segmented serpent-style dragon. Neat coincidence.
Interesting game for sure, the fact they went with randomly generated levels and it's not a quarter muncher despite being a port of an arcade game make it sound worth playing, thanks for the recommendation 👍🏼
The channel does the best game reviews
Hey, I gotta ask. How do you manage to put out this content at this speed? I mean, how are you managing to put out at least 2 consistently high quality videos every week? How do you find the time and motivation to do all this? I'd imagine the process of playing through an entire game, then creating a video for it two times every week would be exhausting. Plus you put out very long and quality SNES music videos and lists here and there. Just really impressive stuff man.
I remember seeing a preview of the game in a ‘93 issue of EGM. It was supposed to be released in the US in May of 1993 but apparently the release was quietly cancelled.
Great review! Having randomly generated elements like levels and story sounds really revolutionary from a game in 1988. Even though it is short, it still looks like an interesting game. I assume it never released in North America because kids could probably beat it in a rental or something.
First, thank you for all of your content, I love retro gaming! Second, did you say buggle bottle?
I heard that too.
Love your videos, nostalgia overload! Quick question, what kind of microphone do you use to narrate your videos? 😊
For me it was a HUGE recomendation.
I wanna thank you a lot for the video and I hope you also have a great rest of your day
This is why I am subscribed to this channel. This game looks really interesting. Thanks!
Awesome review man! I believe this game is also on the Evercade as well. I look forward to checking this one out.
You sold me when you got to the music. Wow that sounds good. I am playing this game now!
If you think that’s good, look up Syvalion Super Famicom Game Music here on CZcams. It’s the soundtrack album for the game and features expanded versions of the music with much better synth quality.
Dat bass slap in the first level tho
Not sure if this is hidden gem material but is it worth playing: I'd say yes. Reminds me of that arcade shooter with the dragon
First thing I thought, looks very similar to Dragon Breed in design of the creature... 👍
By Irem, right? I just looked it up... was it Dragon Breed?
Great review 📼
this channel always pulls long-forgotten memories from the depths of my mind
I'm glad to hear that the Zuntata soundtrack translated well to the SNES. I've only played a bit of the arcade version, so I had no idea how it sounded on the SNES.
It didn't. The Zuntata soundtrack was replaced by one from Hayato Matsuo (Ogre Battle). The gameplay was also considerably slower than the arcade version.
@@alannaevans2402 Well, the gameplay is understandable considering the system it was on.
That bass track at the end 😮
That "Syvalion" voice over sounds great. Reminds me a bit of Sinister. Or Lorimar.
Wow I had no idea this would be the gameplay based off of the cover. Seems interesting.
this boss/character also appears in Gunstar Heroes as a miniboss in Black's Dice Palace.
I have not heard this one, looks very interesting.
Would be interesting if it's a vague clue that the oriental and South American dragons of old were ships.
Once there was an antagonist in Martial Law named Golden Dragon, but he wasn't actually a Dragon
This is a pretty useful review. This is a relatively obscure title for a Taito game, even in shmup circles. It's also received a couple of shoddy ports so I always just overlook it. I had no idea it had randomly generated elements, it's on my radar now.
One point with these short arcade titles - the length is a combination of two factors: arcade operators not wanting good players sitting on their machine for hours without pumping in quarters, and Japanese players having a love of aiming for mastery. Trying to master (ie., finish without continuing or dying, the elusive 1 credit or no-miss clears) a longer game just becomes exhausting and no fun once you've got the first half down. So the brevity of these games is a positive feature to the core audience, they'll literally complain about anything over 40-45 minutes, maybe even less. The idea is to keep moving up to higher difficulties, and getting that 1CC can take dozens of hours.
That was what ultimately got me into these games, I realized that they're not short, they're actually longer than most games on the market if you're playing them as intended, and can usually be had super cheap these days on current platforms. Of course, that's not going to work for your average player (or reviewer), which combined with the large amount of text to translate is probably why this one was passed up for North American release. Glad the PAL folks got it out there.
Played the arcade version on the Taito compilation released years ago. Couldn't imagine playing it with a trackball.
what an interesting take on dragons...random story and level generation? That's actually pretty nifty
The randomizer is kinda cool. Even though the game is short, but because of the randomizer, it means that it is different every time you play it.
i like that aspect of it. i liken it to the multiple endings of Chrono Trigger
Another great episode
Yet another cool title I've never heard of but immediately want to play now.
Now we know where the varia suit comes from. Heh. Interesting game though it isn't my style I still appreciate the effort that went into making it so unique with the story, maps and all that being randomized, especially for this kind of game. Thanks, Mr Drunk.
I hope you will make a list of the best puzzle games for snes!
Definitely digging the soundtrack!
I like the dragon ship's useless little legs
I think the death and return of superman for the snes deserves a longer episode
Heh these days between lack of time and dwindling skills I think I might just give it a go 😝🤷🏼♂
Wow looks cool!
Such an interesting concept with this game.
I remember playing this in the arcade.
This game reminds me of the arcade game Jungler.
That music is pretty cool. Almost sounds like Streets of Rage type of stuff. What's weird though is that there's no actual sound effects from the gameplay itself. Seems odd.
eating monster meat and getting superpowers seems to relate to old yokai stories. I guess the most famous one is the story of a girl who eats yokai meat and becomes immortal
Seems pretty unique! If nothing else the soundtrack sounds really good
I knew this game, but didn't know it was rouge-lite. That makes it very awesome.
The dragon design reminds me of Dragon Breed from a few years earlier
I always knew about this game but have never played it. I might try it soon.
I really dig the slap bass in the music
Hey snes I like how you said "it's up to you and only you"... Seems like it's always like that in these type of games lol!!!
I hope that *you* have a great rest of your day, too!🤝👍
That look like the enemy from Gradius 3 in the volcano stage
😮THATS AMAZING!!!
THIS NEEDS A REMASTER
Randomly generated, huh? Reminds me of ToeJam & Earl. That game also had that feature.
Hey Drunk, you ever do a series on Koei strategy games on the Snes?
It has that early SNES look to it.
I should love a giant golden firebreathing space dragon game, but I don't. Wish it was SNES mouse compatible. Not worth what they're asking for a PAL copy nowadays.
Looks rad, dude.
There's also similar game called "Dragon Breed", but instead it was side-scrolling that only move to the right 🤔
Anyway, thanks for reviewing this in good mannered and positive way rather than what AVGN said about this epic game 😅
What a cool looking game!!
About darius and syvalion in DARIUS BURST one of the final bosses is very much a golden dragon like syvalion.
Awesome 🤔👍🏾
It’s related to the Darius games in that they were both created on Earth.
I feel like a sequel coming out in modern times could be awesome as hell.
This is a good review, but I wish it also included a direct comparison to the modes and gameplay offered in the Arcade version. I'm going to check this game out. I think it would be good as a pick up and play game on a mobile device.
That's a good point, and I admit I'm at the place where it just goes without saying that the arcade original is going to be a lot better than any port. I'm probably not the best guy to break down comparisons though, I'm more of a "hey, this game exists, this is what it does, the end" kind of guy
Wasn't this on the TurboGrafx 16 too?
I never played this game and I still haven't but I love the gameplay, story, and aesthetic of it.
I remember playing the arcade
As a kid I would've just rented it due to the kick ass box art! Lol
At least you get to play as a super cool looking dragon
Never heard of this game. I took one look at the gameplay and thought "sold" but randomly generated levels AND story on the SNES? I have to try this.
What a unique thing to play as.
I'm all in for short games.
This game’s soundtrack is spitting 🔥 like that dragon
0:33 "Bubble Bottle" ;)
I wonder why there is no parallax? Like, I keep expecting the background to be mode 7 due to the lack of parallax, but then it never rotates.
very cool
Seems like the perfect Game if you are undecided what to play! Seems also like the Prices are in uncredible Highs, so i'll get it somewhere else.
This is the rarest coverage ever you might be the first to ever cover the Super Famicom version on CZcams. Amazing
Not at all
Never seen this one before WOW
Huh. This is a bit of a stretch but I wonder how much of this either explicitly or subconsciously inspired Aurelion Sol from League of Legends. Similar name, similar creature, the new rework even has a very similar run and gun style gameplay to this.
What's with the menorahs of death at 1:53?
Great!
Obviously the inspiration for Aurelion Sol
Music sounds like a good Sega Genesis game here, that sounds like a yamaha chip to me.
