I think you might be surprised at how youd feel about your young self. I saw a video of myself from 2014 and I thought I was a cringy ugly kid at the time but when I saw that recently I just looked like a nice kid..because u was a nice polite kid and I'm so sad i was so pointlessly insecure .

I remember watching "dear 25 year old me" when I was 15. Now I'm 20 and i realise how fast time flies. I feel like 20y/o dodie in a lot of ways, mostly because i'm so afraid of the future and i feel like i'm getting older faster than i can realize, i just want to stop every moment to really live it, really experience it and capture the feelings. of course i can't do that and i feel like life is passing me by and i'm just standing there, barely realizing what's happening and just like that, time's gone by. anyway, this video inspired me to write a letter to myself to read in 5 years :)

I'm 22 and I so identify with the way you're feeling. Thank you so much for sharing this, and I hope we both find ways to stay present and just try to treasure the little moments, no matter how fast everything speeds along.

as a 16 year old watching this i cried very hard. my future has always been a scary thing to think about and i dont have many visions of myself past 20, so putting myself in your shoes here i felt all of the emotions you did.
I'm 17, and i feel the exact same- its hard to picture being 20 or 25 and what things will have happened or not happened & where life will be. Its scary as hell. I think writing a letter will terrify me but also hopefully something to look back on and go yeah i did that.

hey, you’re probably 18-ish now - hopefully you’re still around and you have a better vision of the future. if not, i just wanted to say that i was just like you all once; i’m now in my early 20s and i can say with certainty that i’m glad i’m here. the world moves on, day by day. the future is not some huge destructive force that will come in and crash down all at once. the future is tomorrow, and then the day after that, and the day after that. the issues you’re dealing with might still remain, but as you grow older you develop new ways of seeing the world and those issues as well - at the very least, you need only worry about tomorrow. it’s like when you’re in kindergarten, you look at the high schoolers and feel a sense of intimidation b/c they seem so big and smart; like omnipotent adults. but time goes on, over the years you grow and naturally you gain experience, and eventually you’re a high schooler and it all seems much more reasonable and manageable. i hope you’re well. keep pushing on. i was once a 17 year old who thought they wouldnt live past 20. i’m glad i did. im still scared of the future but i feel ready to take on tomorrow, and that’s all you need. take care

Enjoy the better times and when things aren’t good, try to remember that it will get better and to be kind to yourself.
It can help to try and focus on the positive things in our lives, rather than more on the negative side (a balance of both)
Setting small goals can help, write them down to look back on later

I lost my childhood pet recently and I really wish I had heard those words before. It really isn’t as scary as it seems. It’s awfully tragic and horrible and sad but it’s also very serene and peaceful in a way that only death can be. Idk. Very weird and surreal, but yeah, not scary.
I needed that quote. My cats are old and I have small flares of anxiety a few times as week as I think about losing them and always hoping I have more time with them. I know it will be heart breaking, but those words help ease my current worries

I watched this while taking off my makeup for the night. 7 years ago I remember looking at my reflection in a mirror and being physically afraid for my life by how much hatred I saw in my own eyes. Not like “wow this depression thing has gotten bad and that’s scary” kind of afraid- it was more like I looked at the expression on my face and my body reacted like I’d seen a hungry animal about to pounce, staring me down. It was such primal fear and such primal hatred of myself. I so deeply and venomously hated myself for no reason- just bad brain chemistry. It’s been a long time and a lot of healing and work and it’s not every day, but most days I genuinely love myself now. I looked up from this video while washing and then drying my face and I saw my reflection and just touched my cheek and just started weeping and I still haven’t stopped. It’s just been me and that girl in the mirror tearing each other apart my whole life- and now I’m standing here holding her face and shes looking at me like “I forgive you”

Man that made me think. From around the ages of ehh 11 to 15 I just... learned to despise everything about myself. I was so insecure about my body, personality, sense of humor, hell- even the things that made me happy. I dont know where it came from or why it persisted so long, but like you said, it was this primal, connatural hatred. I would nonstop compare myself to my friends, all the while noticing the beauty in them- internally and externally- and never fathoming that anyone would do the same for me. I hated myself with every fiber of my being. I genuinely believed no one could ever love me. And so it was odd and really quite lucky that over the course of a year or so, I managed to unlearn all that hatred without putting too much effort into doing so. Looking back, it was like as easily as it had come on, it was gone. I'm saddened by the time I lost hating myself, but I'm so so grateful that I've learned to laugh at my own jokes, rant about the things that make me happy, dance in the mirror in a crop top and smudged day- old makeup. To this day, I dont know what prompted this change. I still have slip ups, sometimes I still shy away from the mirror or cringe at a joke that fell flat, but now those moments dont define me. I've fallen in love with myself. Who'dve thought :,)

I heard or read somewhere that there was a study where when people look at images of themselves from the past, the same part of their brain lights up as when they see other people, i.e. their brain identifies their past selves as a different person.

For the past 2 years I've been in this "I wanna go back" mood. It really is wuite difficult to look forward instead of backwards to find happiness

God, if I could talk to my 20 year old self I would say: you don't realise it yet, but you're in a toxic relationship with someone who's emotionally abusing you. Basically everything he tells you is a lie. You're going to turn into a clone of him and put him before anyone else in your life. You're going to lose connections with people for a while. You're going to be horribly depressed, fat, and anxious. Then once you break up with him those friends and family will pick you up, dust you off, and tell you how much better your life will be without him. You're going to realise you deserve so much better. You'll adopt a beautiful cat, get lots of tattoos and change your mind about a lot of things you want to achieve. But overall you're striving to live the life you want to live, and doing things that make you a better and happier person.You're still getting there, but you're going to be okay.
Kind of unfortunate that there doesn't seem to be a large amount of videos directed towards 20 year old girls about how to spot toxic people. I don't know if it's because then it would force them to critically look at their standards and how they can be blinded by attraction. Because presumably it's not like 40% of men are emotionally abusive and lie 100% of the time. (I guess men as a group are extremely bad if that's the case, and I would be surprised how society wouldn't immediately collapse with so many immoral people in the world.) So it seems like a fair amount of the time, women are picking a man who turns out to be abusive rather than the many men who are not abusive. Certain traits women are picking out from the group of men to find a partner seem to be correlated with abusive tendencies, because if you just take a random guy, chances are he's not abusive -- abusiveness is not nearly as ubiquitous as that, so something else seems to be going on. And to think how many years a woman has to suffer because she couldn't see the red flags. And so it could help a lot to have more media that tackles this topic. Instead, the trend seems to be more about, "just pick whoever you want, and don't question your desire, just follow it hedonistically, don't be sexist and question a woman's choices." But that can lead you down a pretty bad path if you're not careful.

man i’m listening to some of your old music that i used to jam to in 6-7th grade, i’m in 10th now and just came across this video. i remember the first one coming out and watching it, resonating with you so much, and being happy i had a role model like you in such a tough time. i was struggling with my identity, my undiagnosed mental illness, and finding a way to cope. “dear happy” was the song that pushed me to get a ukulele, which i still play, but it was my first real instrument and got me into guitar, keyboard, and bass. listening to your music and learning it on my uke was my escape. now, 4-5ish years later, i am out as a transgender gay man starting hormones in 18 days, i’m still going through some mental health issues but i am much better than i was. if i did not have your music, i would not be here today. sure, i went though that cliche dan and phil, dodie, twenty one pilots phase but if i didn’t i wouldn’t have made it past 13. seeing you grow now makes me realize how much i have too. thank you dodie for being such a big part of my life and my growth. :”)

My parents divorced a few years ago and last year we sold the house I grew up in and got rid of all the mess and the memories so that kind of hit me hard. I'm only 22 and I still worry a lot about whether I'll ever be, like, okay. this video honestly gave me a lot of hope. I'm graduating from university soon so it seems a good a time as ever to write a letter to future me.

when you broke down about your parents no longer being together but being in better places than they were when together made me breakdown ahhhhhhhhh! my parents are also separated, and my mom is in a much happier and healthier

i think this was exactly what i needed to hear in my own situation. life is changing & there are days when i feel like nothing's going to work out. but things will work out, and it will be okay. and i think, perhaps, in five years i'll be farther along than i ever could have thought possible.
