    Just to let you know if you have a straight steerer tube that has an internal diameter larger than ~43mm you can get an adapter headset to use tapered forks.
    Also if anyone gets this bike pop some foam o rings and fork oil in the fork!

      While your there open up the air chamber of the fork and put some fox float fluid In there.
      As per request, in the multiple forks I’ve worked on RL-O dampers don’t absorb the oil and hydrolock.
      The choice to remove grease and use oil is yours I hold no responsibility of damage to your fork.

    I have a ‘21 Nucleus VR I bought last year. Like you, I wish I had ponied up for the VRS. The new price makes the bike not worth it in my opinion. I still love my bike though. I got a 150mm brand x dropper for $100 which really changed the bike, sold the box 4 for $100 and bought an advent X group set for $200. Going to extend the fork to 120 and call it there until I decide to get my next bike. In 1-2 years the new 2022 Trek roscoes will be around $1200-1500 used so I’ll pick one up

  • @chris.t.crashpenwithmtb5103

    The biggest problem i found with the 2022 nucleus is the choice of crankset , or more specifically the chainring . They have gone with a non standard asymmetric design which will be very difficult and probably expensive to replace . If you ever want to replace the 8 speed Box gears i would budget for new cranks and probably bottom bracket as it doesn't look easy to get a narrow wide 10/11/12 speed chainring for the crank .

    Hey Evan I have the 2021 nucleus and I'm on a tight budget. I was wondering what would be the one upgrade you would do to the bike out of new fork. Brakes or drive train and if so which would you reccomend. I hope to hear back from you. Keep up the good work. Your channel is awesome and has helped me learn a lot. I have a brand x dropper. A Funn Black Ace carbon bar. New renthal kevlar grips and switched out the samox single ring setup for a deore xt crank set after the original samox failed after 7 miles. To compare, I got a similar hardtail for $950 at a bike shop in 2018. Marin nail trail 6. So $1200 is an ok price on a trail ready bike in 2022 . I had to get tubeless ready tires, and add a dropper to my hardtail .

    External headset cups generally helps frame with straight tube to accept tapered forks.
    It is called EC44= external cups 44mm(inside diameter of the headset tube). It extends bottom of the headtube for 1cm~ and allows bearing to sit in the cup with wider internal diameter for tapered fork.
    Disclaimer, If the head tube internal width without the cup is less than 44mm (34mm is also common). It can't accept the tapered steerer tube.
    34mm top and bottom head tubes are designed to use the straight steer tubes with external cups. Inner width of the cup bearings are around 30mm~.

    • @jeffrytomas6196
      @jeffrytomas6196 Před 2 lety

      Yeah, I don’t know why he’s spouting nonsense about straight steerer tubes. High end steel frames still use a 44mm head tube and use a EC44/40 lower cup.

      You can find a fork with a tapered head tube and through axle drop outs. Rockshox Judy, Rockshox Recon, Manitou Markhor are all some that come to mind
