    @0:28 what happened to the "Hudriwudri"? The Hudriwudri was a grotesque figure of a human nose and sat atop a large circular ashtray, to remind passengers not to smoke in the U Bahn. The last time I ever saw one of those was August 1998, maybe also January 2002 when I returned.

      The big ashtrays were sponsored by austrian tobacco manufacturer ATW. "Hudriwudri" was created by cartoonist Manfred Deix to promote their "Casablanca" cigarette brand.

    Interesting video. I am glad you showed the U4 trains going into and out of the reversing sidings at Heileganstadt and Hutteldorf without the driver being on board. (They control the trains from the platform.) Your shots of Stadtpark station showed how modern lifts have been cleverly inserted into an architecturally wonderful station dating from about 1900. Unfortunately you do not show how lifts have also been cleverly inserted into the superb old stations on viaducts on the central section of line U6.

    Until WW I it was a not very Popular stammt tube. Later it was converted to an elektric tramway with 2x streatcars on the Same Tricks. Its was more Popular because it was cleaner

    Thanks for this super video. Thoughts that i had watching it. Is this a metro or a tram because sometimes the current comes from above, sometime from beneath? Strange. 😊

      The term "metro" is more about having dedicated tracks without crossroads and interfering traffic.
      The method of electrification does *not* define a metro. There are lots of metro systems around the world that use overhead power lines.

    • @JaapFilius
      @JaapFilius Před 2 lety +6

      Line U6 and U4 are both lines with historical importance as they formed the so called "Stadtbahn" in pre U-bahn times. There were the Stadtbahn lines G and D. Both lines have seen steamtrains before electrification came into the picture. Line D is now U4: fully transformed in the eightees into an U-Bahn with third rail, high platforms and real undergroundtrains. Former line G is now U6 and that line has a monumental status: a lot of stations and viaducts stations has been beautifully restored and it has a tram-like profile : low platforms and overhead wires. As you can see in the video the trams can be combined to high capacity 4 tram-trains from about 125 metres long (profilewise these trams would fit on the city tramnetwork). All the other U-Bahn lines do have third rail and high platforms. They are more recently build and Wiener Linie is still expending the network.

      U6 is the only out of the five routes that uses overhead power lines. The others (U1; U2; U3 and U4) have power lines beneath the rails. That's also why U6 must use other Types of trains.

    What is the motive force used to operate the train movement?

    • @Fan652w
      @Fan652w Před 2 lety +6

      The Wien U-Bahn, like undergrounds world-wide, is powered by electricity. But not that (as the video shows) Wien U6 collects the current from an overhead wire, while the other lines use a third rail.
