Hi Brother Junkman. I seen Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves when it was released on Summer 1991. I bought the figures, too. I thought the movie was cool. The figures were cool, too. However, a second line of these figures would have been nice. Great podcast! 👊

I had almost all of these! The soft goods are arguably the best ever designed for an action figure line

Dude, I also had so many of these. Recently found my Little John figure, but he had no soft goods and no weapons accessories. I wonder where the heck all my toys went? Bet my dad threw them out.

The Sherwood Forest playset was better that the Ewok village. Ewoks lived on a FOREST moon of Endor why was the playset a bunch of stumps? Also thank you for not using the Bryan Adams song in this video.

I thought this movie was dope. And the toys were so detailed in my opinion back then. Lol.
Bro. Wish I could've had a chance at that second wave. Wow.
I mean it, I watched that movie a lot when I was a kid.

  • @danielkegley690

I remember the movie but not the toy line. The movie was for a mature audience so I'm surprised they made a toy line for it. The late 80's early 90's were an odd time for action figure lines. Batman was probably the best line from that time. The Toy Biz and then Kenner when they took over the Batman line.

@@lunarmodule6419 LOL, well there's no nudity in it but it seems like I remember an attempted rape and some graphic violence . The studio fanagled the PG13 rating. I wouldn't recommend it for someone under 13 and how many kids 13 or older start collecting new action figure lines.

Ok, that was by far one of the best edits of yours yet. You barely notice the transition between Siskel, and Ebert complaining about the scene, to the toy battering ram bashing down the castle door. Excellently done JM. lol

I like this film, I used to have it on video, now I've got it on DVD.
I also used to own the Robin Hood action figure, but I was unable to find any of the others, thus I would content myself with playing with Lego 'Castle' sets, which did have a 'Robin Hood' sub line, thus I had a few more Robin Hood toys, even if they weren't to scale with the Robin Hood action figure.
Looking back I could have used it alongside some of my other action figures (I didn't have all that many in 1991 because at that time I was more of a Lego fan) in some sort of time travel role play, but sadly I can't remember if I ever did or not.
I can also remember it being a big shock to find out about the negative reaction that the film had, because I thought that it was awesome (and that it was all about Robin Hood) I simply assumed that everyone else thought the same as me.
I've never had any issue with Robin having an American accent, nor can I really get my head around why anyone would do so, as, being from the UK, I am used to seeing actors from America playing characters from all over the world (and beyond, after all Mark Hamill isn't really from Tatooine, plus Luke looks a little too pasty to be someone how grew up on a planet with two suns and no girls... the less said about the various actors to play Ming, the Merciless the better...) so an American version of Robin Hood wasn't a big issue for me (after all no one has ever said the same about Errol Flynn who was Australian for crying out loud...) and there have been TONS of American actors to play Robin Hood over the years, so having Kevin Costner is simply just one more to add to the Merry pile of Men in tights who fight for all our rights only to turn Will Scarlet and play with Little John.
As for my own personal favourite actor to play the famous outlaw, well he may be a little before my time, but my money is on Richard Greene, who play Robin Hood in the classic 1955-1960 TV series 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (which is well worth watching, even today, plus believe it or not it is from that very show that we got the ever popular song from) plus in the 1960 movie 'Sword of Sherwood Forest'.
For me Richard Greene, along with most of the other actors in that show who played the other characters, is the definitive Robin Hood, granted the performances and some of the writing are a little on the simplistic side, but for me that show had a certain 'something' about it that for me cannot be found in any other version of the Legend.
Don't get me wrong I do also enjoy a lot of the other versions ('Robin of Sherwood' runs at a VERY close second in my book, followed up neatly by the 1938 movie 'The Adventures of Robin Hood') but then again that may very well be due to the fact that I'm from the UK.
That said though Tom Sawyer and Joe Harper did once dream of being Outlaws in Sherwood for a year, and they had a distain for being President of the United States of America for all time, so perhaps International boundaries are transcended by Robin Hood...
And yes the similarities to 'Star Wars' and more so 'Blake's 7' (here's looking at you Gan) aren't lost on me either...
As for the Covd19 situation all I can say is....
'Will you Tolerate This?' (after all your children will be next) unless the 'Sheriff Got Your Tongue?'.....

The movie was actually a pretty big hit! Critics didn't think much of it, but it put butts in seats....In the theater and at home on VCR. The biggest problem was since it was a one-and-done film, there just wasn't destined to be more figures unless a sequel or tv series was announced. Huge film for it's time, though. Stuff like this is what allowed Costner to get away with Waterworld.

I only saw these toys on the toy shelves once.
I sneaked to the toy section of the mall when my family and I went Christmas Shopping. I wasn't allowed to go to the toy section anymore because I was a freshman High School kid thus too old to go walking around toys according to them.
The mall was pushing these toys like it was the next big thing. They had All the posters and they were placed at a location where shoppers would see these toys first as they entered the toy section.
I found them lame. I felt disapointed too, because I wanted to see some Tranformers and Ninja turtles toys went I sneaked a visit. I felt that toys were dead when I saw them.

I got the Sherwood Forest playset complete with a bunch of the action figures really cheap off Ebay. I have it as part of my Ewok village display and it looks a lot better than the Ewok Village because of the tree canopy. Only thing I dislike is they changed the straw huts on the tree from yellow to an ugly gray color.

  • @ia5662
    @ia5662 Před 3 lety

The critics are usually idiots, I LOVED the fact that it was dark at times and realistic - but there was plenty of funny gags and bravado to offset that. I was in 1st grade when this came out and probably saw it in the theaters. I love it just as much now as back then - the Michael Kamen title score alone is worth watching the movie, it's one of the most rousing film scores of all time, bar none. Absolute genius. I think it's the perfect Robin Hood movie - it has all the elements, minus the accent.
The figures always intrigued me as a kid and yet I never got any - I thought it was so cool you could fire the arrows. I never even knew about the amazing role play toys (the sword and dagger and the bow and foam nerf arrows set) until only a few years ago. Once again, moms are idiots and ruin any kind of quality fun a kid can have. I now own that sword set and I can attest that it is made from a very tough plastic, it would have actually lasted! (like the toys of the 50s). It's a real shame this never made it to me as a kid - we played Robin Hood in my treehouse constantly and this sword would have been my constant companion. Even the sheath is super well-made. Let's not forget as well, regardless of the clever Kenner reuse of figures these were the best soft goods ever made for action figures to date. Incredible design job on the layers of clothing to make these figures stand out and look authentic.
I know own almost all the figures, I def. want that Sherwood Forest playset though. That second wave would have been so epic. I love the King Richard and Celt Warrior!
