Gotta say, I'm a little concerned supporting HBO Max like this after what happened with their animation department but you guys voted and I will deliver. After a landslide victory against the well loved Spy X Family, Our Flag Means Death will be our next series. Please keep in mind that we are moving soon, so there might be a pause or two in uploads for this series in particular. Everything else has been filmed up to now. Also I'M GETTING MARRIED!

yay, always happy to see someone new reacting to our flag means death! the things you talked about in the intro make me really eager to hear your thoughts on the series as you go forward, because oh boy you are speaking the truth on some real nonsense there. i love that you've zeroed in on oluwande and lucius as early faves, they're both such great, intelligent, relatable characters that manage to function as audience surrogates while still having strong personalities of their own. i had a chuckle at your edits about jim's deal going over your head a bit there! luckily things get a little more clear with them next episode. looking forward to seeing more!

I know I'm super late to mention these, but have some fun facts for this episode:
- Young Stede is played by Theo Darby, son of Rhys Darby, who plays Stede
- Show creator David Jenkins cameos this episode as the British officer, who gets hot tea spilled on him and is later tied to the ores

Rhys Darby has such a thick Kiwi accent (and a very modern one), it doesn't kick me out like it might in a more serious show but kind of enhances the 'theatre production' quality of the show. I think it does live more in the world of Hamilton than the shinny twee Bridgerton or the grim and gritty historical shows. The way it's shot is shown in the making of and it really drove home the 'theatre' reality they're in.
Jim's actor is non binary, Vico really steals the show for me. Buttons was so familiar to me but couldn't place him, he was in Trainspotting and Snowpiercer.
Your rant is the perfect preamble for this show, I think they really had the same concepts in mind when they wrote it.
You picked up a LOT of what was happening. Jim's beard. The strike to the back of the head being important as foreshadowing of what would happen with the paperweight. This show really rewards close watching. The season as a whole is also tightly written, so that the symbols, phrases, set-pieces, and themes from this episode set you up for things that will happen in the later episodes. That said: the first three episodes are a bit slow compared to what comes later. Episode 4 is where things really start to take off. I hope you stick with it till then. I am loving your reactions. Of course, I'm one of the legions of obsessive super-fans. You'll probably see a bunch of us commenting. We'll try not to scare you too much.

Most people agree that the main plot truly picks up in ep4.
However, if you enjoyed the pilot you should enjoy ep2&3 as well, they help establish the characters better & the B plots, etc.
I really enjoyed your reaction to the pilot and I'm looking forward to seeing you react to more! I'm about to subscribe so I don't miss anything. Lucius and Oluwande are my two favorite characters. There's some great stuff coming up with the two of them (and everyone else too). A lot of fans will tell you that the series picks up in the fourth episode, but episodes 1-3 are important and funny too! The show was written with a three act structure so the first three are character introductions and world building, and we get to spend time with the crew of the Revenge before the cast of characters expands in later episodes.
I'm also really looking forward to your take on the racial dynamics throughout. The show does well in some places but has a few other moments that make me cringe.

I love your reactions. Very clever but witty at the same time. I agree with Tracey that it really all comes together in Ep 4. Leading up to that, it's fun and brings out more of the characters, but from that episode onwards, it brings an intensity that you wouldn't feel without the previous episodes. I've subscribed to watch along.
