One of my favourite little pieces of trivia about this movie is that the actresses who played the Bennett sisters all lived together during production, to encourage the EXACT sort of family intimacy that you keep mentioning. They really did such an exceptional job with the production of this movie.

There will never be video-essays genuinely discussing the hidden ideas of AI-generated movies. There won't be a question of "what did the author try to convey?", because the explanation would always be that the "author" got fed enough learning data that was later regurgitated as an amalgamation of everything actual people made before. With AI-generated content there are no ideas, there is no why, there is no deeper point, and if the viewers are okay with that, they don't deserve the efforts of actual human artists.

Also, a fan mentioned the conversation in the beginning about the bacteria in the beef being fatal if eaten past the correct time and theorized Erin's burger was tainted and she didn't escape after all but from the tone at the end I don't think that's the case. I liked this movie but was hoping for something more camp. It has comedic moments and dark moments and I wanted more of each. A lot of people wanted a burger after watching 😃🍔

Shipping goggles off, I think it’s pretty clear that whatever subtext there is behind their friend group break up, it seems pretty clear that the reason that Cherry is hung up on fixing Adam is BECAUSE he identifies with him so much and wants that carefree adam of their youth-the one who made every day feel like a festival-back. Something something about the cultural significance of skating/delinquent outsider culture in socially conservative Japan or whatever, and yet these two meet on even footing as leaders of their little high school street gangs and immediately become friends. Looking forward to more of your thoughts.

I LOVE seeing this review by someone in the business. Also, I love the detail at the end when many of the guests replied 'We love you too chef!" back to Slowik, not just the other staff. They really embraced not only their fate but the release from their terrible lives and pain. They recognized the truth of Slowik's words and judgements.

I love this video so much and am in such agreement with you about found family, especially using sk8 for the rebuttals of found family bc it bothers me so much when people use “found family” a little casually to refer to close friend group. I’ve had this argument a lot in comment sections, lol.

I'm loving the video but I have to let you know: this is not Edwardian. It's Regency period, which comes just before Victorian period and the Edwardian period comes after the Victorian period.

I think even the deepness of this movie is possibly intentional, as The Menu is really a critique of all "Arts" that become a "Service", like movies, tv, content creation, etc. I mean Margot wiping her mouth with the title of the movie, "The Menu," is like the film makers saying "you'll do the same as her with this movie, or else die in flames of deconstructing it"

You missed the counter point to "Man's Folly" which was "Woman's Folly" when they all sit around and try to bond with the female chef and play the woman card. Only for her to reveal she is the one that came up with the idea to kill them all, she was never their friend and is more bloodthirsty than Chef Slowik. Woman's Folly is them thinking their better than the men xD

A few fun things i noticed: + The critic Vivian looked distinctly redder in her last shot. This is because in a deleted scene, she WAS dunked in the emulsion + The chicken breast was served on a plate of telephone cord + You only see the cooks take a rest 3 times: a) during Man's folly, where you see a female cook taking a drink, while you see the male cooks in the kitchen still working b) during Tyler's Bullshit, they all stood aside because Tyler would have NO idea how to maneuver in an actual crowded kitchen and they really want him to be isolated to marinate in his own failure and c) during the Cheeseburger, when they gathered around Slowick cooking. + At the end, the complementary gift included Doug Verrick's fingers, and during his execution, his hands are tied behind his back. Slowick REALLY want to make sure that in the unlikely event that he broke free of the restraint and took off his clothes, Dougie would have no way of actually making it back to shore. +Erin and Tyler were the only two people who was seen on screen eating bread + Erin managed to turn the table on Elsa using the Pacojet, which is stated in the movie to be used to give milk a snow-like texture. + The wine steward gave them so much expensive wine because it literally didn't matter, and he accentuated this by straight up pouring a bottle at the end. +The ceramic plate used for the burger looks like a paper plate. An expensive imitation of a cheap peasant's utensil.

One of my favorite movies! Fun fact! Margo was originally suppose to break down and cry when she found out she was brought to the island to die. Anya said she didn’t feel like that worked with the character and decided to do the scene angry and punch Tyler instead. And (obviously) they loved it and kept that scene instead! 🫶🏻

As a CS worker myself and amateur with a love for cooking, what really irks me about the head chef is his "woe is me" attitude towards his work. Sure, critics and asshole customers are definitely an issue, but at the end of the day, HE is the one who decides what he does and what he cooks. I never saw him as intimidating, just someone throwing a childish tantrum. That's why her irreverently wiping her mouth with the menu at the end was my favorite part, because he was just as pretentious and whiny as the people he claimed to hate.

"I'm the one whose paying so maybe shut up and eat." Tyler comes across as a huge dick on the first watch, but on a second watch, when you realize what he's paying FOR.... fucking hell, he's easily one of the top three most hateable film characters of all time. He's so awful that it feels wrong to say Nicholas Hoult did a great job, even though it's obviously true and the praise is clearly deserved, lol.

This is honestly one of the best analysis vids I've seen on the menu! Super interesting to hear your take and thoughts especially explaining the significance of the dishes and the ingredients. I figured they'd tie into the themes of the courses but had no idea how (especially mens folly) so hearing a chef explain it really gave me an even greater appreciation of the movie and the thought that went into it. Keep it up!

I'll comment further later, but I have to say something after only 5:00. I couldn't agree more with what I've heard so far!!! I want to add that, not only do I not think of this as only a martial arts film, I don't generally watch martial arts films. The acrobatic fighting is only a stylistic feature for me. I want to add one more thing--and you may disagree--I think the two lead characters are two sides of the female psyche, in a literal sense, conflicting between them. I don't yet know what else you produce, but I'm going to subscribe just on the strength of the first 5 minutes alone.
