  • I didn't realize how many times I said "Edwardian". Mea Culpa.

Although Darcy would not receive Wickham at Pemberley, Lydia occasionally visited "when her husband was gone to enjoy himself in London and Bath[.]" Both Lydia and Wickham stayed at the Bingleys' frequently and for long periods, till "even Bingley's good humour was overcome, and he proceeded so far as to talk of giving them a hint to be gone." So saith the novel.

It is a hard genre to grasp the point of beyond 'pretty' especially if it's accompanied by some negative education information. If I hadn't been watching the 95 series (still highly recommend it, it's sweet but much lower budget) yearly from when it came out, I would never have read the books.
My sister and I have always described Darcy as 'socially awkward' and a 'girl detective' (affectionately) because if we had a movie from his perspective he would just be vibrating the entire way through and he 'solves' the problem fast once he decides to save Lizzy from a regency fate worse than death. He is in much the same situation as Lizzy (expected to marry specifically for family needs, though not the financial reason) but when he sees her escape from Mr Collins (we all know people have been telling him the worst gossip about Lizzy) and risk it all he decides he can too.
Lydia as my Nana puts it "has made her bed" and is expected to just find out what kind of mistake she's made as she goes. It's why modern retellings are so terrible, we would NOT expect a 15yo or a woman at any age if they age her up, to stay with a predator like Wickham. It's just not going to work in any other era. I think she's the balance to Lizzy's win at risking everything, to show how badly it could have gone if she'd risked it all and lost.

Liked your honesty but was prejudiced against your foul language. Happy that you mentioned your mother. Intrigued enough that I could watch another movie reaction in the future.

PLEASE try watching Love and Friendship. It's an adaptation of Jane Austen's little-known book Lady Susan. The book is written as a series of letters, and is arguably the most sarcastic and funny of all her books, as well as having the same amount of romance and social commentary. The movie was done so so SO well, and stars Kate Beckinsale. I think you would love it for the slew of "Oh no she didn't" moments.

Indeed, F- twitter! I moved to Mastodon myself and I've enjoyed it.
And also, I'm glad you decided to give it a chance. I do like rereading the book often, but I've also become a fan of some of the P&P "extended universe" book out there (because P&P is in the public domain). For a more modern take on the book, you might also want to check out "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries" which is P&P in a modern AU where one sister is transmuted into a cat and Darcy is too hot (but still awkward) for words.

    Your mother sounds interesting.
