He was and is still an icon here in Arizona. The Pat Tillman Run for charity is still going.

I've heard the story before, but this is the most in-depth summary that I have heard so far. Good video, good reaction.

Was going to comment but couldn't get my anger under control enough to even be able to speak coherently. This just breaks my heart and I truly feel ashamed of our government. RIP Pat Tillman and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

I can fully understand Jennifer. This incident is near and dear to my heart. I've lost good friends and fellow soldiers to combat and suicide. I constantly struggle to keep my emotions in check to deal with the incompetency and dishonesty of self-serving politicians and top military officials who have become political. The saddest part is those patriots on the front line fighting wars for all the right reasons and making the ultimate sacrifice in some cases because of total incompetency.

Thanks again Amanda. As BP2 said, still a lot of unanswered questions. The statement that there were 3 shots "close together" is a bit ambiguous. Without all the facts, all we can do is speculate. But from my experience, three shots fired from 10 yards that struck Tillman in the back close together would likely have to be fired intentionally in automatic mode. The M16A2, with which I am quite familiar, has a selector switch that allows one selection of 3 round bursts. Someone behind Tillman holding the rifle in a more casual ready position when it fired such a burst would likely have a wider spread than someone who was in a proper stance to effectively control the recoil. The initial cover up could have been done by Tillman's team with good intentions to preserve his reputation and to protect another team member. Regardless of whether that happened or not, the further up the chain of command the investigation went, the more political it became. The only reason they would even reveal it publicly is because they were concerned their cover up would be exposed while they perpetuated their lies. Typical of our government, including top military officials who have become political, even with some current events. BTW, when I served in Desert Storm, we had an Apache crew that killed American troops with friendly fire.- Hawk

There was a lot of military killed by friendly fire during Vietnam, and the govt tried very hard to cover that up from the victim's survivors. As in this case, it was the cover-ups which brought the most anger than the deaths themselves. Lying and covering up the truth seems to bring on much more distrust of the military and government leadership than telling the truth would have done.

I for one appreciate your suggestions, Amanda. Each one you have submitted have illuminated subjects I've struggled with for many years, but realizing most people have either forgotten them or never knew about them. In many cases they hit very close to home for me because of my military experiences. Thank you.

@@Hawk-ODA212 yeah I hate how history gets forgotten or glossed over with the passing of time and think it important to remember things even if they are difficult to think about or put our country in a bad light.

I hate that the army used Pat as a recruiting tool even after knowing he died of friendly fire. I fully agree with his mother that they did that and that is not what he would have wanted because after he enlisted he did not want media attention. I am proud this his mother set up his foundation and gives an award for service at the Espy’s every year and with us being Buffalo Bills fans at my house we were so proud the Bills training staff received the award last year for jumping into action to perform CPR that ultimately saved Damar Hamlin’s life. I feel like what I know about Pat Tillman from reading about him and watching documentaries that is the legacy he would want a not one when he is used as a recruitment tool for the Army.

So much political bullshit it's beyond understanding.
Friendly fire is so tragic but happens from what I've heard described as the fog of war.
I have no military experience but I can understand how it happens.
So yes, at first maybe it was an attempt to disguise the fact that he was killed by friendly fire.
From what I've read the team split up in two and with radio communication being compromised the one-half didn't realize they were firing on their own.
    That doesn't explain everything though.
It's inexcusable no matter how you add it up.
