This gotta be one of the most beautiful bikes I’ve ever seen. I’m a big fan of minimalism and function over form, so this is right up my alley!
i agree. wasn't sure at first, but really like the classic looks. only complaint is the cable routing on the top tube. wish it was all on the down tube like the disc trucker
exactly. I love the mustache handlebars that say easy going. The only thing left for this guy to do is to load up the camping bags and head off into the woods.
rick vegas agreed. It gives the bike an easy going air, but I’m sure it’s a very tough and utilitarian machine!
I agree with you, Reggie, about favoring minimalism. Bikes just keep getting more and more complicated, and I was into that for awhile. But, now? My Specialized Stumpjumper FSR full-suspension with hydraulic disc brakes and F&R air shocks sits in my garage, and I'm riding my pre-2000 Stumpjumper hardtails with V-brakes / cantilever brakes. omg bikes, I was just looking at your exact bike, but in a small. :-) Very utilitarian, gets the job done, no questions asked. I've been toying with the idea of getting a Surly (Bridge Club, Ogre, Disc Trucker) or a Kona Sutra, a Salsa, etc. and don't want to spend much more than this, but I always go back to my 1995 Stumpjumper FS CrMo hardtail or my 1997 Stumpjumper M2 Comp hardtail for touring/bikepacking (just switch out the tires for road or trail). Anyway, thanks for the walk-around of your new Surly, and I hope you can trade for a small frame.

Great video, thanks! Surly are adamant that 47mm is the max for 700C tyres. I want to run Schwalbe Big Ben which are nominally 50mm, but looking at the video it seems like there's loads of room. They're 45mm tall off the rim and about 48 mm wide. What do you think?
How can it be small? I am looking to get a bridge club I am 5' 7" and from what I read I should get the medium. And you are taller !
Nice video, after you have spent more time on it, please do a comparison video with the Disc Trucker.
I don’t think it’s too big, you have quite a few spacers and saddle to stem drop is deepish. Anything smaller means you’d have to add spacers (which you can’t now).

Hey... thanks for the video. How tall are you? Couldn't you just get a shorter stem? That thing looked really long. I'm about 5'7" and I'm looking at getting a small Bridge Club. Wondering how you did with your new bike. I'm thinking frame up build. thanks again
i'm 5'9" with short legs and arms. def recommend the small for you. reach was not the major problem. i didn't like the stand-over. the sensitive bits were bouncing off the top tube. i would consider building the bike, especially if you already have some parts laying around. if you have to source everything new, you'll likely end up paying more than the factory build, but at least you could make your own choices.
I’ve had my BC for a couple months now and I’ve probably got 150-200 miles on it. I love the bike it rips on the gravel trails around my area. I can take it on pavement too if I’m not going super far. I’ve upgraded the grips to some DMR Deathgrips, I put issi thump flat pedals on it and I’m prob going to put some wider tires on.
Awesome. Bike seems like it can chew up pavement just fine. Why do you say ‘if I’m not going too far’? Do you have the 27.5 version?
omg bikes No I have the 700c version it’s just as comfortable as the terminal bars are my body position catches wind like a kite. I should really say, if it’s windy out and I’m on some open stretches of road it wears me down.
ah. yes, for sure it's not a very aerodynamic riding position on this bike. on my disc trucker, if i want to go fast, i have to put my elbows down on the handlebars. then, 20mph (light load) is very doable on flat ground. it's not as easy to take this position on the terminal bars on bridge club. similarly, on my kona unit, the stock bars are very wide, so it's also like a parachute even in a more aggressive riding position. i've ordered some narrower bars, but plan to adjust the cockpit to sit more upright, so won't be any speed gains there.
In future if you will want to change tires to 50mm wide (2 inch) you will need to change inner tubes aswell or inner tubes can work with 50mm tire?
i have not looked at the tubes that come with the bike, but one option is to go tubeless

Thanks for the detail on this video. How would you compare the riding style of the BC to the Trucker? I have a Disc Trucker but need a more upright riding position. Thinking of either trying another bike like the BC or modifying my DT with a Jones bar.
Thanks! I would say the BC is somewhat similar to the Trucker. However, my Trucker has an uncut steerer and an ungodly amount of spacers on it, so the position may be more upright than if you bought your bike complete. Plus, I have trekking butterfly bars, not drop bars. There are differences in geometry such as much lower BB on the Trucker that make it feel different, but as far as upper body lean, I'm not sure it's all that significant of a difference for me. I bought Jones bars for the Trucker and will be installing them soon. Check back for that video, and I'll discuss the fit then.

Wow, the amount of clearance! I would put some 2,6" 650B tires with fenders on it, such as Schwalbe PickUp
yes! this frame can ship with either 29er or 650B tires. your choice!
From experience, a Surly Extraterrestrial 26" tire fits much better with 650b fenders, so really just put some 650b sized fenders on and then you can run whatever tire or wheel size you fancy in that range. I have some VO Wavy black fenders on my Troll. Very nice looking. :)

Exactly, he has the seat post and stem fully stacked!! I'm 5 foot 10 and I just ordered a large, I will have a short stem on bike, but it will be a perfect size touring bike.

@@bladerunner_92 I did build a size M for female friend, Bike did seem little larger than I expected and would be a good "american fit" for my size. Now I put 700/29 tires on bike w/ laid back seatpost, probably made bike feel large! The frame Geometry is more traditional triangle style. I just measured Top Tube and compared with older same frame shape Large Surly 1x1, they measure the same. So I still believe this is going to be a desired fit for me ( I want the largest bike that will fit under me for Road & Touring). I would advise you to compare the Frame Specs to a Bike you are familiar with. I dont think size L would be too small for you, especially if you plan to use 700/29er Tire or 650 plus. It all comes down to Size of Bike preference. Good Luck. I hope to build my Large in very near future, parts are soo hard to come by right now.

Those Tektro brakes are OK; they will stop the bike. But OK isn't good enough. I have gone back and forth between a Bridge Club and an Ogre. But in either case, the Tektros would come off immediately. Deore or above hydros would be the go-to.
i actually tested deore and tektros back to back on a spcialized p3 and i didn't find a significant difference. i think you have to step up from deores to obtain noticeable benefits
omg bikes I have Deore hydros on one bike and XT on another. They feel exactly the same. Indeed, the inner mechanicals are nearly identical. The ability to do adjustment is the primary difference.
As an aside, even the newest entry-level Shimano brakes are great. My wife’s new bike has MT200 brakes. I am very impressed. For entry level, they are amazing.

@@peterbaskind9872 maybe not. i took the tektros off (which were also not very well bedded in), slapped the deores on, and was quite disapointed at lack of improvement i felt. took them off and went back to tektros.

Great question! I think that's a very much 'it depends' answer. For example, I built my Disc Trucker around 12 yrs ago for similar money. So that's 144 months of ownership at $8.33/month. That seems a bit high to me, especially given the fact that I don't ride 12 months out of the year. So let's say I only ride 8 months/yr - then the cost is $12.50/month. That seems really high to me for owning a bicycle. If you ride every day then maybe it's reasonable. If you ride 3 times per week, then you're spending something like $3 per ride. I've only managed to put 7,500 miles on that bike so that's $0.16 per mile. None of that is counting maintenance and replacement parts (tubes, tires, wheels, chain, cables, brake pads). If you love it, then it's absolutely worth it. Disc Trucker has not let me down and has been a very versatile and enjoyable bike to own. I don't see why the Bridge Club would be any different.
It's better just to get the frame and build it up yourself.
