  • In the latest episode of our Building the Best Surly Bridge Club series we'll show you how to light up your bike with a dynamo hub and light. We'll walk you thorough the process, provide some insight on the benefits of a dynamo hub, and show you how it looks on our project bike.

I've got a Straggler and I use a Shutter Precision hub and Busch & Muller light, on a WTB i25 tough rim with DT Swiss Champion spokes.
I can build wheels so that part was free, but the cost of the whole shebang is absolutely worthwhile, because I ride that bike every day to work, and removing the need to charge lights is a very simple but a very great freedom.

I have Rene Herse Umtanum Ridge tires on mine. I feel like they are some of the best all arounders for pretty even mixed terrain riding.

I've really enjoyed my Victoria Mezcal tires in 27.5 by 2.6. Fast rolling on pavement or hard pack with good side lugs for cornering.

For the money the Maxxis Ardents are great all round trail tyres. Sufficiently supple and not puncture prone. Interested to see what you decide to use.

I'm going with Schwalbe Super Moto-X 27.5x2.4 and works great.

I've heard that the surly extraterrestrial tires are great all around tires for road and gravel in tubeless and tubed usage.

Greetings from Brazil! I would really like to purchase a Surly frame along with a fork to build a perfect travel bike. I'm planning a trip from the Amazon, in the north of Brazil, to Ushuaia in Argentina, but we don't have any options for good chromoly frames on the market. Importing is difficult because American stores generally don't ship to Brazil and the import taxes are very high, I don't have enough money. I really admire the Surly brand and I still dream of one day having a machine like this!

This build has been so fun to follow. I have a pair of Vittoria Mezcals on my Bridge Club and LOVE them. Perfect for on or off-road. I'll be using mine for a lot of bikepacking in the coming months.
Curious...have you ever run dynamo cabling through the stem?

I had asked my local bike shop about new front wheel with a dynamo hub for front and rear lights. He was quoting me like $1000. My bike didn't even cost that much. That sounds high. It's it even a carbon wheel, just aluminum.

I'm working on a full cost breakdown for the Bridge Club. Hopefully, I'll have a video to share soon. Parts for the front wheel and front light are around $625 retail. We're using a polished rim so you can save $50 by going with a silver rim. So, $575 - $625 which doesn't include labor or the cost of the rear light. We charge $75 to build a wheel if you purchase the parts from us. We do build wheels and ship them out for customers if that's something you're interested in. Thanks for watching!
