  • Given the nature of mountain biking, broken spokes can happen from time to time. With a few tips from Doddy, you'll be able to replace a broken spoke and re-true your wheel in no time.

    Although it might seem daunting at first, replacing a spoke doesn't have to be a very difficult job.
    Doddy talks you through the process of replacing a spoke on your mountain bike wheel here:
    First remove the tyre and rim tape, particularly if you are running a tubeless set up, and the cassette or disc rotor if it is a rear wheel.
    Work out the length and type of spoke you need for your wheel.
    Next remove the broken, or damaged, spoke.
    Thread the new spoke nipple onto the replacement spoke, and then tighten to finger tightness.
    Now using a spoke key, only tighten by a quarter turn on each spoke. Also don't put too many turns on one spoke, you may need to slightly loosen the spokes on either side of the broken spoke to true the wheel properly.
    Once you have got the wheel as true as possible, relieve the tension on the spokes by placing the wheel on a hard surface and leaning on the rim.

      I managed to replace a spoke without removing the tyre, but I had to hold on to the nipple as if my life would depend on it. Thinking about it, it probably did.

    That cable tie truing guide is a great hack! In fact, you could probably tape one cable tie to the seat stay so the locking end is sticking up and you can slide a tail (without locking end) through it. It's adjustable that way. You can't back it out, but you can run it all the way through and back in if needed. I'll try it next time

    You are meant to hold aero bladed spokes in place with a stablisation tool as you tighten the nipple otherwise they twist out of alignment, this guy failed to do that, it can cause them to break prematurely. They are aligned so they cut into the air, for aerodynamic effect.

    • @llamacannon1714
      @llamacannon1714 Před 6 lety

      These are not aero spokes. This technique is called "bladed spokes" which helps the strength mostly.

  • @THEKOSCKOHACKERCHANNEL
    @THEKOSCKOHACKERCHANNEL Před 6 lety +20

    You did one really crucial mistake
    Bladed spokes need a special spanner in order to keep the bladed part from twisting (as it happened in 5:55)
    Otherwise you are putting tremendous forces on ur hub flanges and on the spokes them selfs.

    • @gmbn
      @gmbn  Před 6 lety

      Hi Laura, pinch the tyre so that you can cleanly pour most excess sealant into a wide container such as an oil bath or a washing up bowl. Then use some rags to wipe up the rest. It doesn't need to be super clean, just so it's not dripping everywhere :)

    • @vancel35
      @vancel35 Před 6 lety

      What about the rim if you have to retape it? It doesn't seem like the tape would stick if there's too much residue on the rim.
